Of The Vine are making an appearance here on Wednesday, December 14th

PFH Productions presents:

Of The Vine here at the Drunken Unicorn on Wednesday, December 14th, 2011.

"Every time I think I have a good handle on who’s who and what’s what in the Atlanta music scene, some band comes along and reminds me that I’m probably only listening to and touching on a fraction of what’s really going on. This week’s epic punch to the membrane comes courtesy of post-rockers, Of the Vine, who last Friday held a record release show at the Drunken Unicorn in celebration of their new self-titled EP.

I wish I had some sort of back story to provide you with but all I know is the band has been around is some form or another since early 2005. In 2006, they released their debut EP, the three-song We Took Our Trembling Hands From Our Ears and Their Cries Were Heard (told you they were post-rock). Somehow they managed to fly under my radar for all of six years, which makes me feel awfully lazy for some reason.

But now that I’ve heard them, I’m going to sing their praises. If you are into the epic swells and dynamic textures of post-rock, of music that aspires to climb and cling to the heavens, you would do well to check these guys out. The most obvious comparison would be to Explosions in the Sky and you can’t deny that the trio shares EITS’s penchant for crafting cinematic songs whose ebbs and flows carry the listener on an emotional journey. It may not be storytelling in the traditional sense with words and concrete actions, but within their elaborate song structures there are definite narrative arcs that lead you along and help invoke a certain symphonic sense of place and movement.

Of the Vine’s music is by turns dramatic, elegant and fragile. But when the moment suits them, they can also turn positively thunderous traversing into more metallic territory with muscular grooves and crushing guitars. Simply put, this band destroys. It’s some of the most beautiful and engaging stuff—local or otherwise—I’ve heard all year." Latest Disgrace

Good Weather For Airstrikes are going to be the second performer of the evening.

Good Weather for Airstrikes is a four-piece indie-rock band from Howell, MI. Since the band's inception, a wide and diverse amount of influences and experiences have enabled the group to refine a unique sound that combines the brooding ambience of post-rock with dynamic, guitar driven passages and impassioned lyrics reminiscint of modern indie and emo music.

Good Weather for Airstrikes was formed in the summer of 2008 by James Radick and Bill Grant, with Joe Hillier and Josh Fenn joining by the end of the year. The four released an EP, "Yearning," as well as several digital releases before putting out their debut full-length "To Have Our Hearts Emptied, To Be Left as We Came" in October 2011.

Kathryn Calder (of the New Pornographers) will be performing here on Saturday, December 10th

Ok Productions presents:

Kathryn Calder here at The Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, December 10th

Kathryn Calder is one of those artists who belies her age. She began her professional music career as a teenager, and by the time that most people are just stepping into their first independent record store, she had recorded 2 EPS and 4 CDs with the Victoria based Immaculate Machine (from whom she parted ways in 2008), and toured the world and recorded three albums as the newest member of The New Pornographers.

"Where that first album of hers, Are You My Mother?, was incredibly personal and introspective, Calder’s sophomore album is much more open and outward-looking. According to Calder herself, Are You My Mother? was an album that she wanted to record for her dying mother at the time, and that deep personal emotion could be plainly heard, bearing itself on each and every song from that album. As a follow-up, Bright and Vivid finds Calder exploring wider sonic landscapes that range from cutesy synth-pop (“Who Are You?”) to more experimental indie rock (“New Frame of Mind”, “All The Things”). While I usually commend artists for branching out, some of the risks she takes on Bright and Vivid just don’t convince me that she is sold on these ideas either." - Luke Larsen / Paste Magazine

Himalayan Bear are performing third.

On "Hard Times," the third album from Victoria, BC’s Himalayan Bear aka Ryan Beattie exhibits an indisputable level of ingenuity, a fetish for reverb and a voice that is as delicate as it is potent. Beattie may be best known as the front man of Chet or the guitarist of Frog Eyes, but he started making records in his early teens and has amassed a large catalog over the nearly two decades since. It’s his solo project Himalayan Bear which best shows his inimitable talent and remarkable voice, and "Hard Times" is his finest effort to date. "Hard Times" will be released on August 2nd, 2011 by Absolutely Kosher Records.

Much of the album hinges on tension and desperation, but his years of experience show in a subtle guarded confidence throughout the album’s seven tracks. Though the songs may inspire a deep loneliness, Beattie certainly wasn’t alone in the recording process. The chosen studio, The Last Resort, proved to be a social hub of the Victoria scene which allowed for brainstorming, last minute additions and a casual, but creative environment for the album to develop in. Instrumentation ranging from lap steel to trumpet to double bass all made their way on to the record, sometimes acting to ground Beattie’s vocals on tracks such as "Half Wit Son," but also at times drawing the listener into Beattie’s world on tracks like "Man of Fire."

Lucy Dreams will be the second performer of the evening.

"Lovers of noisy rock take note! Lucy Dreams have released their album ‘Vivian’ and they’re still in High School – these kids rock! ‘Skull Mask’ sits squarely in the middle of the nine track release, it’s a spaced out rock tune with lots of melody. The laid back introduction doesn’t give away the energy of the chorus, it’ll get stuck in your head. The scratchy lead guitar break works well against the cleaner sounds too. ‘Skull Mask’ is one of the more sedate tracks on ‘Vivian’, standing out together with ‘VHS’ and ‘Death March’." - Sounds Better With Reverb

Swingset will be starting the show.

Like Teeth EP is the new release from Atlanta band SwingSet. With their fuzzy guitars and catchy choruses Swing Set is making records for people who still think music matters. Originally started as a bedroom projectSwing Set is now a full band consisting of ex-Waterliars/Long Knives rhythm section Thad Goad (drums) and Chris Poma (bass), Mike Copen (guitar/vocals) and Sodajerk frontman Alex Brenner (vocals/guitar). Their live shows are loud distorted hook laden goodness reminiscent of bands like Dinosaur Jr. and Archers of Loaf. The songs are short and sweet taking the Tom Petty method of “don’t bore us-get to the chorus” with no filler. The Like Teeth EP contains three reworked songs from the previous Great Shakes EP and two new songs. Recorded by Ben Price at Studi Laroche SwingSet has captured their raw live sound and infectious hooks that are sure to have listeners singing along.

Quit hatin. These dudes are fun. Raucous party tunes. Sometimes feete shufflink , sometimes a touch of metaltastic. These guys like hard work and ball sweat. If you haven't started moving yet, then you are really really running out of excuses at this point. Save your excuses for when you need them, like the next day when you were supposed to meet this cute girl for coffee at eleven AM, which you make but then have to explain your godawful smell because you met her at bible study and want her to think you are something that you are not.
They have an album. That they recorded. Do that.

Touchstones for the band include King Crimson, Tortoise, The Mars Volta and local powerhouse Cinemechanica." -John Seay / Flagpole

SOLD OUT! - Macklemore and Ryan Lewis will be here on Saturday, December 3rd

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are performing together at The Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, December 3rd, 2011.

Macklemore is an emcee from Seattle, Washington that often shows up the larger acts he opens for in the city. At his own shows he keeps the audience going, no matter how small the crowd.

On his debut album, The Language of My World, Macklemore drafts a lyrical landscape of classic proportions. This record is teeming with energy and ambition, serving as a fitting debut for one of this country’s most promising young artists. Macklemore’s gift, like that of all great songwriters, is his ability to speak on universal experiences in a uniquely personal way. Throughout The Language of My World, Macklemore consistently addresses topics that are uncomfortable or taboo, in an attempt to exorcise his own personal demons.

His music is inspirational, filled with social and racial consciousness, as well as a constructive political vision. He’s also funny as hell, making music that is at once hilarious and affecting. Born and raised in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood Macklemore has been an integral part of the Seattle hip-hop scene for the past 7 years. He developed his style and character as part of Elevated Elements, which he founded when he was just 14 years old, and quickly moved on to pursue his solo career. From these humble beginnings Macklemore has matured, both as a songwriter and performer, into an artist who is clearly beginning to realize his near limitless potential.

Champagne Champagne- Seattle’s own punk-rap-shoegazers, backroom brown hornets, vibrate higher in their magnetic blackness. Two MC’s: Pearl Dragon, lifer-a smoke-breathing hood Jim Morrison- and Sir Thomas Gray, the hyperactivated game-gifted trouble man. One producer/multi-instrumentalist DJ Gajamagic (AKA Mark Gadjahar, drummer/founding member of defunct Seattle posthardcore institution The Blood Brothers, current backbone to Past Lives and Weekend) – master of dark arts, road-trip Macgyver, and sound systems savage. Together they “outrap and outparty everyone” (via Seattle Weekly), drink greenrooms dry, and smash packed clubs and sweaty basements alike with their afrofuturist afterparty music- rejecting easy classifications, broke groupies, and bammer weed. Just picture The Cure, Cody ChesnuTT and Cannibal Ox at a Pabst-soaked jam in a haunted mansion. Now picture The ‘Pagne burning it the fuck down. Yeah, you got it.

Dropdead will crush your skull on Friday, December 2nd

Vinyl Rites presents:

Dropdead are headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Friday, December 2nd, 2011.

Dropdead formed officially in January of 1991 in Providence RI. Having met in 1989, and playing together for a year before this as Hellocaust, a lineup change saw Bob and Ben switch instruments, a name change, and a great increase in speed and intensity. The idea was to play pissed off, aggressive, no bullshit HC/Punk with personally political lyrics. Musically the influences drew from bands as diverse as Confuse, Siege, Larm, Crass, Swans, Infest, SSD, Pandemonium, Icons of Filth, Gauze, Septic Death, Discharge, Anti-Cimex etc. The first show happening within a few months, April of 1991 with Born Aginst and Rorschach. From then on no looking back. The band continues to this day with a strong Do It Yourself work ethic, booking their own shows and releasing their own records. Over the years Dropdead has played hundreds of shows, recorded two LP's, some splits and EP's, toured the USA and Europe numerous times, as well as Australia and Japan.

Now in 2011 Dropdead reaches it's 20th anniversary year still moving forward with fresh energy and ongoing appreciation for the underground DIY comunity. Several projects are underway, including yet to be announced releases, and some gigs in the USA and Europe.

To the future! Cheers for 20 years of Political No Bullshit Hardcore Thrash!

Torche will be the third performer of the evening.

Torche, the four-pronged Floridian Riff Colossus that has steamrolled its way across the international underground. Led by vocalist/guitarist Steve Brooks (formerly of doom dropouts Floor) and featuring the myriad talents of drummer Rick Smith, bassist Jonathan Nuñez and guitarist Juan Montoya, Torche unfurled their self-titled debut in 2005 via Richmond, Virginia’s Robotic Empire. The glorious half-hour of blissed-out power-grooves, triumphant vocal harmonies and cosmic resonance within was variously hailed as “stoner pop,” “thunder rock,” and “doom pop,” but a consensus was quickly reached within the Fourth Estate: Both the underground and mainstream press had their hands halfway down their pants just thinking about listening to Torche. The band was immediately lauded as giants among men, leaders among sheep, and powerbrokers of a deadly new sonic idiom founded upon Brooks’ signature “bomb-string” detonation-detune. As Decibel magazine so righteously pointed out in May of 2005, Torche “carries on in the dizzying Sabbathian tradition of Floor, only potentially more bottomless and epic.” Seven months later, the same publication would declare Torche as the # 7 album of the year in its annual top 40.

Slowriter will be performing on Friday, November 25th

PFH Productions presents:

Slowriter are headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Friday, November 25th, 2011.

"Slowriter is the music of Bryan Taylor. Bryan spent 2008-2010 touring and recording with The Chariot. He released his first album, “What Keeps Me Sane” in 2009 while still touring with The Chariot. After he left The Chariot in 2010, he went into the studio with Ryan Boesch (Foo Fighters, Eels) to record the latest Slowriter EP. In 2011, Slowriter became a live band adding Nick Taft, John Cable, Matt Karoglou, and Phil Hawkins. With a full band and projection for each show, Slowriter is constantly working on improving the live show. They will be heading out on a southeastern tour in November. Visit the band’s website www.slowriter.net for more information.

1. Where are you from and how long have you been making music?

I was born in Atlanta and have always lived in Georgia. I’ve been making music for about 10 years. Starting with a Blink 182 cover band. I played in a “hardcore/metal” band in high school called The Rein. After high school I joined The Chariot. I toured and recorded with them for 2 years. I left in may of 2010. Now I am Slowriter.

2. Describe your sound in 5 words:

happy, joy, groove, mellow, chill

3. Who would you list as your top 3 musical influences?

in no order:

Empire of the Sun – Everything about this band has been a huge inspiration to me. I drove to New York last year from Atlanta to see them. They have a pretty brilliant live show and their singer has been a big influence on the way i sing.

Kanye West – A genius in some ways…. I just think he makes some of the most entertaining music to listen to.

The Flaming Lips – The overall happiness and good vibes that The Flaming Lips give off is something I really tried to achieve with my newest EP." - Sean Pritchard / The Blue Indian

Slowriter on Facebook

The Forest Wall will be performing second.

"The Forest Wall are siblings Derek and Amanda Salazar from Washington DC. Their plainly named recording, The EP, contrasts with its absorbing, imaginative contents. Contrast is a pervasive and important element to this recording, as it can be observed throughout the album both within and between tracks.

The first track, Canon, opens with a beautiful flurry of notes cast in the form of electronically reproduced vocals before launching into somber reverie. Does It Make A Sound is complex indie pop full of rich harmonies and increasingly diverse orchestration over its course. Spanish Skies is simply beautiful, relying on strong vocals and guitar accompaniment. Suitcase Son opens sparsely and flourishes with thumping floor toms and bright guitar riffs, and then closes in pleading resolution. Suitcase Son is the strongest track on the album; enhanced by emotive and empathic intentions, it’s truly powerful. The closer, In the Pines, is consistent with the nature of contrasts that exist within this recording. It’s a lo-fi bluesy-folk number that features Amanda’s smoky vocals and is marked by a pervasive hiss reminiscent of recordings made on old cassette recorders. Its raw sound represents a core to the Salazar siblings, who present their talents well on this debut recording." The DaDaDa

The Forest Wall on Facebook

The Last Relapse will be performing first.

The Last Relapse is a band hailing from Atlanta, GA. Started in 2006 by Vocalist/Guitarist David Holding, their sound consisted of acoustic guitars, catchy vocal melodies, and a tambourine. Around the time their drummer Justin Canada joined the band in 2007 the music began its evolution into something much more complex, obscure, and different. The band has gone through many lineup changes before getting to the solid one they have today with guitarist Ben Barlament joining in 2009, bassist Michael Emory in 2010, and guitarist Adam Freeman joining in 2011 . They released their first full length CD "Machine" in July of 2010 . You could describe the music as lyric driven Ambient/Rock with heavenly vocal and guitar effects and busy complementary bass lines held together by clever complicated drum beats. Columbia City Paper described their music this way: "Indie Rock with an ethereal, dream pop sound. Maybe if Modest Mouse smoked a bunch of opium it would sound similar?" Other major media outlets including Absolutepunk.net, Atlanta Music Guide, and around a dozen radio stations have played and shared their music. They have played over 100 shows in GA, TN, and SC. Currently they are working on a CD of 17 unreleased songs written from 2006-2008, and a CD of all new material. Both will be released very late 2011/early 2012!

The Grayces will be the second performer of the evening.

"Bands can be a dime a dozen in Music City, and album release parties are more like a nickel. So when an exceptional band puts out a good album, the occasion calls for something extra — like maybe a costume party. That's what The Grayces are throwing tonight at East Nashville's The 5 Spot, kicking off the national tour in support of their new album Social Shock.

The record marks an advance for the band, and not just because it's their first full-length. Guitarist/ vocalist Iz Stone, bassist Patrick Ward and drummer Gaelen Mitchell still deliver plenty of garage-y guitar riffs, fuzzed-up bass, minimalist solos and sing-along choruses. But Stone makes up in swagger what her alto lacks in range, whether using a cabaret singer's world-weary croon in “No Sense In Crying” and “Like The Way” or squeaking like a squeeze toy on “Ricky” and “Eleanor.”" - Jo-Jo Jackson / Nashville Scene

Flat Cat will be performing first.

Flat Cat started as a side project of Atlanta musician Chuck Brittain (guitarist with "The Cogburns" & "The Cherry Bomb" and formerly of "The Sexual Side Effects") as an avenue for his original songs. Since its inception in 2007, the band has mutated to the super talented current line-up with Chuck sharing singing and writing credits with Bucky Motter (Bass), a gender queer performing songwriter and rocker. Bucky is a veteran of the Atlanta music scene with two critically acclaimed CD's and has opened for such artists as BB King, Indigo Girls, and the Manhattan Transfer. Amy "Catfish" Rollinson (from the rollerderby-themed band "Tricksy" and the Joan Jett cover band "The Cherry Bomb") has stepped up her musical chops and now helps front Flat Cat with her amazing scream, crunchy guitar sound, and lyric creativity. Rounding out the talented new line-up is Clay McClure (drummer from "The Sexual Side Effects") who has taken the band from the straight forward 4/4 to a new rhythmic high and a new direction.

Little Horn will be headlining on Friday, November 18th

PFH Productions presents:

Little Horn will be headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Friday, November 18th, 2011

Little Horn began when Atlanta musician Keith Forrester wrote some songs about, as per usual, hard stuff he was going through. Being shy and reclusive about singing it wasn’t until a group picking session in Alabama where he was asked to sing a folk song that everyone else had forgotten the words to that his friend Daniel Bellury noticed his potential. After that fateful day Daniel stepped in to encourage and produce the aforementioned songs into recorded existence. The very minimal gothic-folk style album Such Pretty Houses was born and released very quietly on the then infant New York label Whaleheart Records which Daniel had founded to put out his and his friend’s recordings.

Since Such Pretty Houses the style and sound has evolved and gotten much bigger. With a dark, southeastern, soul-searching lyrical style accompanied by a not-so-typical low end voice, their lack of shame in wailing their instruments, and having been called any number of combinations of indie, folk, gothic, psychedelic, progressive and rock, Little Horn’s approach is fairly simple: they love what they do, they write what they like, and they hope to be doing it for a long time.

Correatown was a name someone called her once. Imagine the lights that slowly haze by when you're driving home late at night bleary eyed, or the night sky heavy with clouds just after a thunderstorm. It's Angela Correa's band daydream fully realized in a dark club filled with the reverberating layers of washy guitars, beautiful harmonies, growling fuzzed out analog synths and that voice. Based in the Eastside of Los Angeles, the band is a mainstay in the tightly knit local music community.

In previous incarnations, Correatown was a more spare amalgam of early folk and lo-fi buzzing indie rock; however, over the past few years the sound has evolved into a lush and textured experience of melodic soundscapes. "When I began writing songs for our latest recordings I kept imagining the sounds and instruments that would shape the direction of our new songs. The most appealing were really freaked out thick and pulsing bass sounds or odd twitchy static noises tucked into shimmering and ethereal melodies. I wasn't sure how it could end up being beautiful but the more the band explored different arrangements and instruments, the more I felt the possibility of having a less organic sound that felt more evocative of the music we wanted to create was our compass."

For this performance Correatown will be Angela Correa and Rob Poynter.

Richard Parsons will be performing first.

Currently living in Decatur, Georgia. Frequently visiting Los Angeles, California and playing at Tangier and the Silverlake Lounge. Periodically traveling to random parts of the world to dive in the ocean with the sea creatures. Systematically encouraging my friends to move to places that I love to visit regularly but don't want to live in.

The Young Maths are performing here on Wednesday, November 16th

PFH Productions presents:

The Young Maths will be headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

We want to play the game at the highest level. We want to become THE currency by which youth culture is bought and sold. We want to SAVE ROCK AND ROLL so that our t-shirts will be worn in the next summer action blockbuster by millionaire placeholders. We want to scare old white people and enthrall their children, so that we may in turn become soft and rich and fearful of the next wave of youth culture marketing. We have our first reunion tour planned. We will kill on t-shirt sales alone. We realize that we are not selling music; we are selling product, and our product is progress. We want to antagonize established artists and then patch things up at awards ceremonies, creating ratings bonanzas for everybody involved. We want to donate all of our blood money to fashionable causes. We want to preach about the evils of capitalism from expensive microphones in million-dollar studios. We want it all.

Siamese Twins are starting the party!

"Siamese Twins are a fairly new band to Atlanta, composed of members of some underground heroes… We just got the chance to interview them about their music and other stuff, take a read below to find out more about the thrash/punk all stars we know as Siamese Twins…

Who are the members of Siamese Twins and what do you play?

Joey Hoffman is our vocalist, Ben Ziskind is our guitarist, and Elliot Fullerton is our bassist. Ryan DiDio plays drums, does backup vocals, and does some recording for the band.

What does the name Siamese Twins mean?

We threw around a lot of band names before settling on Siamese Skin, which is what we went by for one or two shows. I have no idea why we thought that was a good name … it’s pretty dumb. We were kind of rushed because we had our first show coming up but didn’t have a name, so I think we just synthesized one out fragments of other names we’d been throwing around. But yeah, eventually we decided to change it to Siamese Twin, the name we’ve played most of our shows under so far. And then recently we pluralized it to make it Siamese Twins. We promise we won’t change it again. As for any significance in the name, I wish I could say there was some, but it’s just to be taken at face value.

What kind of music would you describe Siamese Twins as playing?

I think a lot of bands will tell you that they’re not necessarily aiming for a specific genre when they write their music, which is also the case for us. We know we want to play music that’s generally fast, loud, jarring, cathartic, and at least somewhat relatable to the listener. I’d also say there’s a component of sloppiness in our music — especially during our lives shows – and while I wouldn’t say we’re necessarily proud of playing sloppily, I think the underlying idea is to put expression before perfection.

Although I think the foundation of our music is punk, I’m sure if we tried to say we’re a punk band, punk purists would have aneurysms. That would probably be an inaccurate description anyway. I hate to sound like the “we play music that defies labels and categorization” guy, so I’ll say that there are definitely elements of surf, punk and post-punk, hardcore and post-hardcore, noise, and the occasional tinge of jazz and pop."
