Believe it or not, Indie rock's best kept secret is the small close knit community of bands and artists from Oklahoma. In the wake of bands like The Flaming Lips, Starlight Mints, Other Lives, and Colourmusic, Admirals is emerging as one of the premiere bands in this region of the country. Hailing from Stillwater Oklahoma, home of Big XII's Oklahoma State University, Colton Tucker (Guitar/Vocals) Andrew Bair (Keyboards/Piano/Guitar) Cory Brewer (Drums) and Brett Murphy (Bass) make music that has been described as "What is missing from modern rock music (Aaron Legrands-Producer Nashville).

Negative Approach are coming to the Drunken Unicorn on Friday, June 8th

Triple D's presents:

Negative Approach

here at The Drunken Unicorn on Friday, June 8th, 2012.

Negative Approach is an American hardcore punk band, formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1981. The band is considered among the pioneers of hardcore punk, particularly in the Midwest region.[1] Like most hardcore bands, Negative Approach was little known in its day outside of its hometown. It is now idolized in the Detroit rock underground and the punk subculture, considered to be one of the elite bands of the "old school" era, and continues to be influential.[2] Negative Approach initially broke up in 1984 with singer John Brannon moving onto Laughing Hyenas, and later Easy Action, but the band has reformed as of 2006 and continues to tour sporadically.

GG King are performing before Negative Approach.

When the Carbonas died, Atlanta wept. Mothers and children, left orphaned by the deceased, wandered the streets with tears streaming mottled faces. Strong and silent men struggled to maintain composure, and they retreated to basement workbenches, biting lips, cracking knuckles, running hands through thinning hair, sullenly wondering: "Why?" Skies darkened. A palpable feeling of devastating loss plagued the city. Nay, the world.

Thankfully, ex-frontman Greg "GG" King wasted little time in yanking up his knickers and pursuing new noise. He wrote a series of tunes not unlike those he contributed to the Carbonas – that winning mix of hyperstrummed '70s Europunk and brawny stateside r'n'r pummel intact – and amassed a crew of friends and former bandmates to help him flesh out the din. He released a handful of solid teaser singles, played a number of good shows. He reasserted himself as one of Atlanta's greatest exports.

Bukkake Boys will be starting the show.

"Over the years since their last EP for Sorry State, Bukkake Boys have expanded to a five-piece and grown increasingly heavy, intense, and pummeling, leaving behind their scraggly, noisy hardcore for a sound that takes the best parts of huge-sounding Japanese HC like Framtid and Kriegshög and combines it with the simplicity and urgency of classic USHC. If you like your hardcore to fit neatly in a subgenre, you might not get it. If you like your hardcore delivered with maximum possible venom and bile then The Bukkake Boys are for you!"

Ceremony are performing at the Drunken Unicorn on Thursday, June 7th

Chunklet presents:

Ceremony here at the Drunken Unicorn on Thursday, June 7th, 2012.

"The Bay Area quintet Ceremony formed in 2004, playing especially raw, noisy, super-fast hardcore, something people tag "powerviolence." It's worth knowing that Violence Violence, their 13-song debut LP (right, right), lasted just over 13 minutes. (The CD version appended a re-tooled take on the 2005, 7-song Ruined EP.) Early on, though, they'd mentioned Joy Division, Suicidal Tendencies, Pink Floyd, Negative Approach, and Tom Waits as influences, and by the time they released their third album, Rohnert Park, in 2010, they were doing something very different, essentially making good on the promise of their eclectic record collections. Ceremony slowed things down, got sludgier and noisier in a Siltbreeze sense, discovered some British post-punk roots, and reminded me at times of the Shadow Ring covering the Fall." - Brandon Stosuy / Pitchfork

Primate was taking a break while Bill was off conquering the world with Mastodon and Kevin was assaulting Japan in Brutal Truth and Mike, Shayne and Dave were sitting around bored. Mike said, "hey, so why don't we write a bunch of hardcore songs and play some shows." It sounded like a good idea so we started Shots Fired.

The debut of Hanging Fire speaks for itself from the opening song Hanging Fire to . . . the dark wave leads that characterize most of the songs and qualify Ars Phoenix to stay on the front line with bands like Cold Cave and the Soft Moon, remodeling the styles of the dark garbed 80's while bringing them up to date for our times." -- The Blog That Celebrates Itself

Corner Kid is playing a show here on Wednesday, May 30th

is presenting:

Corner Kid here at The Drunken Unicorn on Wednesday, May 30th, 2012.

Corner Kid (Chad Yochum) is on a mission to explore every nook and cranny of the full spectrum of music. With his debut album "Atlas, At Last!" he portrays every aspect of his own being through a myriad of self-performed instruments and textures, from ear-piercing guitars, to haunting antique pianos, horn sections, ukulele, harmonium, even a simulation of the SID Chip, which was used to make music for the Commodore 64. If he thinks it, he makes it happen. And his reason is simply "Why not?"

England In 1819 will be performing before Corner Kid.

In August of 2007, brothers Andrew and Dan Callaway found themselves living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the entire family together for the first time since their childhood spent in the English countryside. Along with their father, Liam Callaway, the trio of musicians began writing songs reflective of their Athens, Georgia roots and their fortuitous return to the South.

The result is an unusual combination of Southern edge and English introspection, with haunting lyrics and massive chamber rock unfurling in a sweeping, evocative surge of sound.

Rocky Votolato returns to the Drunken Unicorn on Tuesday, May 29th

and

is presenting:

Rocky Votolato here at The Drunken Unicorn on Tuesday, May 29th, 2012.

Seattle musician Rocky Votolato is a soft-spoken, very kind, very hard-working father of two, born in rural Texas and raised in the Pacific Northwest indie scene (where he fronted the acclaimed rock band Waxwing). In his decade-plus life as a songwriter and musician he has sought to articulate something essential about life, writing songs that seem to have been scratched into a boxcar wall by a worn-out and lonesome ghost. His gravelly, sandpaper smooth voice and introspective lyrics mark him as that most rare of punk-rocker-turned-acoustic-troubadours: Votolato writes graceful, understated, human, unpretentious songs, demonstrating that simplicity is still a viable option for accomplished songwriters.

Together they form a song cycle that celebrates the regenerative nature in all life.

If you haven't started moving yet, then you are really really running out of excuses at this point. Save your excuses for when you need them, like the next day when you were supposed to meet this cute girl for coffee at eleven AM, which you make but then have to explain your godawful smell because you met her at bible study and want her to think you are something that you are not.
They have an album. That they recorded. Do that.
