Thursday, October 14th is Two Cow Garage

Two Cow Garage will be performing at the Drunken Unicorn on Thursday, October 14th.

Columbus, Ohio-based classic-rock-meets-roots-punk outfit Two Cow Garage will release their fourth full-length, "Speaking In Cursive", on Suburban Home Records.

Comprised of Micah Schnabel (vocals, guitar), Shane Sweeney (bass, vocals), Chris Flint (guitar), Andy Schell (keyboards), and Cody Smith (drums), the outfit, which plays more than 200 shows a year (and has for the past six years), has made their darkest, yet most rewarding record to date, writing songs that deal with the problems and dilemmas of growing up, coming to terms with ones dreams versus reality, as well as songs about substance abuse, the wasting of youth (and the effects on your friends when youth is stolen too soon), navigating the troubled waters of relationships, and, of course, crushes-turned-heartbreak.

With "Speaking in Cursive", Two Cow Garage has brought on a permanent keyboard player with Andy Schell, helping the band expand on their guitar-bass-drum assault, adding depth and richer melodies to the heartbreak-on-the-sleeve lyrical bite and rock attack that Two Cow Garage is already known for.

From the opener of "Your Humble Narrator", starting out with Schnabel's tattered, smoke-filled voice, the song builds, from a toned-down guitar-bass-drum attack that turns into something melodic and poignant with the addition of keys, before quickly busting into the chorus and ripping through you with pure adrenaline.

Through the all-out classic-rock-gone-punk vigor of "Brass Ring", ringing with the line, "don't ever be second stage, apathetic melancholy is all the rage, there was never any brass ring to be found", as the band comes to grips with the fact they do music for the love of it, not for the "Brass Ring" or any other reason.

To "Bastards and Bridesmaids", a song that questions youth and wasted youth with plenty of guitar noise buzzing as the rhythm section pounds it out, before quickly sliding into an unforgettable hook, and "Swingset Assassin", a haunting acoustic number that is anything but soft and pretty: abrasive and cutting, Two Cow Garage can rock out and bring you to tears with nothing more but voices and an acoustic guitar:

The album's "Sadie Mae" really shows off the beauty of keys in a melancholy rock song, reeling you in while the lyrics and the story line bring you to your knees in tears as you wrap yourself up in the story of "Sadie Mae", and when the line "If the love doesn't kill me, the loneliness will. And if these drugs don't thrill me, then nothing else will".

Ending with "Swallowed By the Sea", one of two songs bassist Sweeney sings lead on, the band gets more roots-y and ends with a heart-wrenching, alt. country song to put others to shame.

Yes, Two Cow Garage have done it again, delivering a record that surpassed their last ("III"), while moving forward, expanding their trademark sound, but still making it sound wholly Two Cow Garage.

We Are The Willows are performing second.

The usual sounds brought to mind at the sight of a cityscape are typically loud, harsh, and overbearing. Roaring bus engines, rumbling trains on their tracks, and buzzing markets and cafes all amplify the sounds of people coming and going. These sounds create a constant, yet ever changing hum - a tune that can provide limitless resources for creative minds, but can also pummel the creative spirit. It is from this constant hum that We Are The Willows' Peter Miller conceptualized the tonal sound-scapes of his debut full-length, A Collection Of Sounds And Something Like The Plague.

Originally from Eau Claire, WI, Miller now resides in Minneapolis, MN where he attended college. At the age of 24, Miller has spent the majority of the last six years immersed in the Minneapolis music scene, actively recording and performing in bands throughout his college years. Since graduating, while working his former full-time job as a preschool teacher, Miller has concentrated fully on music. We Are The Willows is one of two current projects; Miller also lends his songwriting, guitar playing and vocals to well accomplished Minneapolis-based indie rock band, Red Fox Grey Fox. We Are The Willows started as a side project - a place to write songs outside of the structure of a full-band, but has slowly become a main focus for the singer/songwriter.

Merkava are the openers.

"Merkava is a unique band in that they blend a variety of musical styles. They have a heavy sound but mix in some tropical and jazz themes from time to time. I also noticed that they had two drum sets on stage and at times would switch off playing the second set between a few different members. They also had some bongos they worked in every so often and would also switch vocalists. I like this because it screams talent and cooperation; showing that one member isn't afraid to give the spotlight or share his instrumental attributes with another musician. Its a sign that a band works together well and has greater potential to last...
...they impressed me enough to want more. Their broad and comprehensive sound is awesome and I think would be attractive to folks who enjoy an experimental, more spacey sound. I look forward to seeing Merkava again and I'm sure we'll have plenty of chances to do so." - Beatlanta.com

The Dig are performing second.

"With one hand deep in roots rock and roll and live performances that lift you up and leave you ragged, The Dig are building a reputation as one of the best young bands in New York. The songs on their new EP, Good Luck and Games, produced by Bryce Goggin (Pavement, The Ramones) have energy and intelligence matched only by their heartfelt swagger. See them now so you can say you saw them then." - The Onion

"I have no witty observations or creative writing pull quotes to give you. They are just a damn good band." -Music Snobbery

"This is the catchiest, most intriguing power pop band to emerge out of the no-name pile in some time. Brooklyn’s The Dig has one self-released EP and a growing live following. Even so, they’ll most likely be news to you, the way they were news to me. That’s good news, though, The Dig is fairly crackling with potential." -Pop Matters

The District Attorneys are the openers.

The District Attorneys "Orders From..." EP review: When I think of "fun in the sun," lawyers aren't the first thing that comes to mind, but from now on, I will look to Athens' District Attorneys for the appropriate soundtrack. Their summery Americana is wrapped in a gauzy layer of reverb that gives the songs a subtle beach vibe. But there is just a enough pedal steel calling in the background and jangly banjo to place the band firmly in the South. So, instead of valley girls and big kahunas, The District Attorneys pay homage to the mountains and valleys of South Carolina and the bluesy, boozy energy of the East Coast. An overdose of reverb seems to be a common trend these days, in the wake of Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, Surfer Blood and the like, but this is much more organic and breezier than all that. The smooth backing vocals float in like wafts of honeysuckle, and the mood remains upbeat and light-hearted throughout. Stand-out tracks include the particularly celebratory "Splitsville," with its chorus of friends singing in the background, locomotive harmonica and big Southern rock riffs. Closing track "Jerry Ten" made me smile with its seamless homage to Poison, as frontman Drew Beskin hollers melodically, "won't be nothin' but a good time" mid-verse. Orders From… is a sizable EP at seven tracks, but every song is absolutely essential. Expect this gem to make more than a few local year-end best-of lists. -Flagpole (Athens magazine)

Margot & The Nuclear So & So's will be at the Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, October 9th

Margot & The Nuclear So & So's are headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, October 9th, 2010

Margot & the nuclear so and so’s third album Buzzard is primal and truculent, going straight for the vitals. Opener “Birds” finds the band going to places they haven’t before – lovely, languid verses progressing into fuzzed out, howling choruses throughout the song’s twists and turns – while still holding to the guitar-based ethos on which the album is founded. “Lunatic, lunatic, lunatic” may be familiar sonic territory for singer/guitarist Richard Edwards, but the (very) dark humor that slowly unveils is something that he has only flirted with (innocently) in the past. “New York City Hotel Blues” and “Claws Off” distill Margot’s music to its essence: melody-driven pop music with teeth, set adrift against Edwards’ surreal and emotional, if slightly twisted lyrical tendencies. Similarly, “I Do” refines the evocative chamber-pop for which the band is known to its most heart-rending fundamentals, supported by simply Richards’ plaintive voice and an acoustic guitar.

And there is, of course, an intriguing path that led Margot towards this evolution in sound, which contrasts the lively optimism of 2008’s Animal! (and/or Not Animal, simultaneously released after contention with former label Epic). Buzzard was recorded over one freezing month last winter in an abandoned movie theater in Chicago’s Ukrainian Village neighborhood. Edwards had taken up residence there after leaving his hometown of Indianapolis, when the house where he and the previous seven members of the band had lived was damaged in a fire last summer. Once settled, he began writing a collection of songs loosely inspired by the 8mm ‘nudie cutie’ films unearthed in the theater’s basement, and the youthful reaction of mixed emotions that the films evoked.

After six months of writing, longtime Margot members Tyler Watkins and Erik Kang joined Edwards in Chicago and the three began to dig into the new material. A cast of local musicians, who had begun to come to the theater to watch weekly screenings of Kamikaze Hearts, soon also joined them. It was against this grainy backdrop that Edwards and Co. recorded the songs with the help of these new friends, including drummer/producer Brian Deck, Tim Rutili (Califone, Red Red Meat), Joe Adamik, Cameron McGill, Katie Todd and Ronnie Kwasman.

Theater seating was cleared away to accommodate the instruments, while a makeshift control room was assembled in the projection perch. As the days went by, a dusky, Bacchic energy started to fill the theater and Buzzard began to take form. Recording took place between the hours of 10pm and 5am, and no artificial light was allowed (as such, three musicians and engineer Neil Strauch broke bones from tripping over cables). Accidents aside, the willful band – live and manic, newly freed from any past constraints – growled their way through the songs and infused them with a raw, forceful energy that Margot had only hinted at in their past recordings. The result is the band’s most immediate studio recording: bigger and louder than ever before, finally capturing Margot’s powerful, captivating live show and defiantly Midwestern sound.

The Lonely Forest are performing second.

...The Lonely Forest possesses a remarkably sophisticated songwriting acumen and a knack for delivering interesting, winning melodies mainly via piano, bass, and drums. In their lusher moments, the band—led by John Van Deusen and his passionate vocals—combines the pop majesty of the Long Winters with the quirkiness of XTC, but when Van Deusen busts out his guitar, the thrust becomes punkish. They're absolutely poised to be one of Seattle's next breakout acts.

Cameron McGill & What Army are opening the show.

Born in 1877 in Calw, on the edge of the Black Forest, Cameron McGill was brought up in a missionary household where it was assumed that he would study for the ministry. McGill's religious crisis led to his fleeing from the Maulbronn seminary in 1891, an unsuccessful cure by a well-known theologian and faith healer, and an attempted suicide. After being expelled from high school, he worked in bookshops for several years.

His first collection, 'Stories of The Knife and The Back', describes a youth who leaves his mountain village to become a poet. The lush instrumentation and beautifully crafted melodies, belie the darker nature of the song content. Mostly focusing on personal admissions of guilt and failure, the album's characters struggle in coming to terms with their mortality. All throughout, they simply try to find a friend and fall in love.

This was followed by 'Street Ballads & Murderesques', the tale of a schoolboy totally out of touch with his contemporaries, who flees through different cities after his escape from home. The collection of material on Streets...takes pop musick to the dark libraries of your old house, inhabits a stark and desperate corner of the mind, and simply tells a good story. The wildly vibrant characters offer their most honest interpretations of the dishonest life. They travel time, fall in and out of love, miss and are missed. These are songs of imminent regret, class IV rapids, European gypsies, pre-renaissance Germany, cities with chips on their shoulder, veterans of domestic war, handwritten letters and handmade harmony, foreign wines and local girls, break-ups and breakdowns, and post-war divorcees.

World War I came as a terrific shock, and McGill joined the pacifist Romain Rolland in antiwar activities--not only writing antiwar songs, but editing two newspapers for prisoners of war. During this period, McGill's first marriage broke up (reflected in "It's Not Right" off of 'Street Ballads & Murderesques'), he studied the works of Freud, eventually underwent analysis with Jung, and was for a time a patient in a sanatorium.

In 1919 he moved permanently to Switzerland, and brought out Cameron McGill & What Army, which reflects his preoccupation with the workings of the subconscious and with battles against depression...but mostly focuses on learning how to have fun. Their first document was the dense 'Hold on Beauty' which was released last winter amongst intense fighting. April of the new year, saw the release of 'warm songs for cold shoulders' by the forward thinking Parasol label.

He never won the Nobel Prize, but his mother always loved him. Until his death in 2056, he lived in seclusion in Illinois.

Thursday, October 7th is Fuck Yesss

Le Castle Vania will be hosting Fuck Yesss for October 2010 on Thursday, October 7th.

"I’ve already been at this party for an hour and a half. The room around me swells and boils with the shirtless bodies of hundreds of people. There’s little room to breath inside the packed out Drunken Unicorn and even less to move, but the crowd undulates and writhes like one sticky, sweaty organism.

The scene around me is already chaos when the riff starts. It’s a thundering heavy metal breakdown; akin to something you would hear at a Hatebreed show. I instinctively raise my arms to protect my face from the inevitable violence of flailing limbs, but thankfully the crowd around me isn’t interested in moshing. They seem to be waiting. Like caged bulls burdened with foolish human riders, they steam from their nostrils and stamp their feet in anticipation of the sound that will signal the opening of the gate. I realize that the breakdown, in my mind the moment of truth at a show, is to these people a mere preamble. At this realization, my heartbeat doubles. What the hell is about to happen?

Then the beat drops, and all hell breaks loose.

Let me rewind a bit. Dylan Eiland, AKA Le CastleVania, has been a friend of mine for several years. I met him when he arrived at my home with some mutual friends severely trashed on his (I later found) signature Bombay Sapphire and proceeded to quickly befriend me. I’ve always had a place in my heart for other enthusiastic fellows and I guess he felt the same way, so despite our differences in styles, we bonded quickly.

At that time, Dylan hosted a regular dance party at the Drunken Unicorn on Saturday nights, and he was already 6 years into his career as a producer, DJ and musician. I lost track of Dylan’s life after a while, due both to my erratic work schedule and his increasingly busy tour schedule. But I knew that his career was doing well and was satisfied to see him when I could.

When I was asked to do an article about him and his success for Purge, I jumped at the opportunity. The only thing better than writing for your friends is writing about them. I caught up with Dylan at the Drunken Unicorn as he and his fellow performers were setting up for the night’s FUCK YESSS Dance Party which Dylan hosts the first Thursday of every month.

The lanky, mild-mannered DJ explained to me that while he is far from his career goals, things have really taken off for him since last we down to chat. Having founded his AlwaysNever label imprint a few years back, Dylan now works not only behind the mixers, but in all arenas of the music scene. A DJ by trade, Dylan works now as a producer, a label head, an event coordinator and in marketing of all of the above. Needless to say, Dylan is a pretty busy guy. With a year-round tour schedule that consists mostly of one-shot dates around the world, Dylan spends a lot of his time at airports.

“Touring alone is tedious.” he admits when I prod him on the subject. “I mean, I don’t have a band and no real reason for a road crew. I do it all myself. It does get pretty lonely though, especially when no one speaks English.” While he does have his grievances with the long hours, he knows that it’s the way to get the job done. “It’s way more work than people realize; even when I’m traveling I’m working.”

In this business though, traveling is essential, as networking is the name of the game. DJ’s create the vast majority of their fan base through live shows, so the need to stay mobile is apparent, even after 11 years in the game. “It’s a double-edged sword. I mean, it’s lonely, but I get to see the world.”

I would say that’s a definite truth. Since his touring kicked into high gear, Dylan has visited dozens of countries and every continent except Antarctica. “Australia is definitely my favorite place to play. I love the people there. I always have a great time.”

Touring aside, Dylan has a lot of work to do while he’s in Atlanta. His label alone keeps him busy. He is currently pushing a release from Atlanta party posse Rrrump and putting the finishing touches on his own EP, ‘Nobody Gets Out Alive”. (which after attending his Fuck Yesss party, I have a good idea of where he got the name) Nobody Gets Out Alive will be Dylan’s 2nd release, a follow up to his wildly popular 2007 EP release ‘Trouble Tron’. With his efforts focused primarily on remixes for other artists so far in his career, Dylan has been left with little time to perfect and promote his own works, but he plans on changing that as well in the coming year, with a full-length LP now on the horizon.

Dylan admits that he has a lot on his plate, but that’s the way he prefers it. “The only way to stay ahead of the pack in this business is to stay as busy as possible.” With a label, an LP, a heavy touring schedule and potential mash-ups with members of Blood Brothers and The Mars Volta all on deck, I would say that LeCastleVania is staying well ahead of the pack. The only question is when will the constant rocking cause Dylan to take a pit stop. I asked him directly.
“This is my life, it’s what I love. I’m not slowing down any time soon.”

Like anyone else, I love to see my friends succeed. In fact, that’s what Purge is all about, promoting our friends. So, with that in mind, be sure to check out Le CastleVania’s new releases coming at you soon, and if you have a first Thursday free, make sure you see the spectacle that is the Fuck Yesss dance party at Drunken Unicorn. A few years down the line, you’ll be glad to be able to brag to your friends, “I saw him when he still played small club shows.”

Good work, Dylan. Keep those bodies moving." - Winston Ward / PURGE ATL

RRRump will be performing as well.

When party people and club goers want to get their asses shaking in Atlanta, they need look no further than the DJ/producer collective known as RRRump! While the trio of Mayhem, Drew Van Atten and Justin Bright is rooted in slightly different dance music backgrounds, RRRump!’s common groove is the desire to get dance floors moving with nu disco jams and electro bangers.

RRRump! has become a mainstay on the Atlanta scene as part of the monthly Fuck Yesss indie electro dance parties at the Drunken Unicorn, where a young, vibrant crowd lines up for waits of longer than an hour to get inside and hear the resident trio alongside Le Castle Vania and monthly guests. Fuck Yesss was recently named the Best Club Event in Atlanta by Creative Loafing critics and readers alike, thanks in large part to RRRump!’s beat-driven contributions.

The characters that comprise RRRump! have been mainstays on the Atlanta club scene for several years. Mayhem is known internationally for his drum ‘n’ bass skills as well as for being the head of SLR and 404 Audio. As the leader of the Cleaning Up the Dirty South (CUDS) crew, Drew Van Atten has brought numerous world renowned techno, house, dubstep and IDM acts to town and has spun at clubs such as the Mark, Halo and the now-defunct Bazzaar. Justin Bright, also a CUDS member, has been spinning hip-hop, drum ‘n’ bass, house and electro for the past decade.

Outside of Atlanta clubs, RRRump! and its members have performed at events on both coasts such as ¬The Glass House (LA), Rock and Roll Hotel (DC), 4th and Swift (Nash.), and many more. And tunes from the trio’s Always Never/So Sweet release it can be found on iTunes or on blogs such as Missingtoof.com and others.

No matter where they are spinning or what they are producing, the members of RRRump! continue to get parties started for the sake of starting parties. The booty-clappin’ electro heavy beats come directly from the heart and go directly to the feet and rumps of those looking for fun on the dance floor without the pretense of megaclubs and velvet rope elitists.

The Octopus Project are playing on Saturday, October 2nd.

Tight Bros presents The Octopus Project at the Drunken Unicorn on Saturday October 2nd, 2010

After releasing 2007's Hello, Avalanche, an engaging album that netted praise from Rolling Stone, The Village Voice, Wired, Pitchfork, Stereogum and a zillion blogs, The Octopus Project settled into a relentless touring schedule that took the band to nine countries and a handful of major music festivals. As the band members added thousands of miles to their odometer, long drives soundtracked by minimal classic composers Terry Riley and Steve Reich led to thoughts about how to expand the scope of their own endeavors. Already known for concise blasts of experimental pop and energetic stage shows, The Octopus Project wanted to create a deeper sound, a more enveloping experience.

As an early experiment, the band scored original music to a series of short, psychedelic films from the previous century and performed the sold-out set in a favorite Austin arthouse theater. The overwhelmingly successful shows prompted invitations for repeat performances and talk of taking the production on the road. But the band was still in search of something bigger. They wanted to completely surround the audience with sound and vision – total immersion.

In late 2009, the band took some time off from touring to start writing new material and tinkering with electronics, and Hexadecagon began to take shape. The band members quickly realized that in order to achieve their creative vision, they would need more than the standard two-channel stereo audio and a single projection, but the equipment didn't exist, so they built it. Using custom electronics (The Bend Matrix) and pushing existing software (Ableton Live, VDMX, OSCulator) to its limits, the band spent the next three months writing songs specifically for an eight-channel surround sound system. Eight speakers would be arranged in a circle around the audience, with the audience surrounding the band at the center. Overhead, the music would be accompanied by eight synchronized video projections designed by Austin digital artist Wiley Wiggins.

The Octopus Project finally performed Hexadecagon twice to over-capacity crowds during SXSW 2010. The reception was emphatically positive. Paste Magazine said of the show, “if there’s a such thing as a happiness seizure, be prepared to have one,” while The Austin American Statesman described the event as, “the trippiest, most elaborate thing the Octopus Project have ever done, and that's a very tall order.” USA Today ranked the performance one of its top five shows of SXSW.

Buzzing from the performance, the band dove head-first into putting the songs to tape. After two months of recording in their home studio, the band members took everything up to Dallas to finish up and mix down with John Congleton (St. Vincent, Explosions In the Sky, Clinic, The Walkmen), who then blew up the sound environment the band had created into a high-definition, ultra-widescreen sonic universe. The music is written to work in layers - originally for an audio canvas of eight-channels, but here re-arranged and re-orchestrated to create an engrossing experience for anyone with a pair of speakers (or headphones, ideally).

Hexadecagon, more than any previous release by The Octopus Project, feels like a true album in the classic sense. It's not so much eight distinct songs as one epic suite with mood swings. Peek-A-Boo Records is thrilled to release Hexadecagon on CD, 2xLP and digital formats on October 26, 2010.

Spectralux are performing first.

an astounding entertainment experience... Spectralux was formed by Henry Watts, Jimmy Martin, Nate Fackler and Peter Roets in Atlanta, 1998. Influenced by David Bowie, Pixies and Wire, the band took the stage with a handful of songs and homemade props from malfunctioning television sets (ABOUT 40) to dismembered mannequins performing up the East Coast with such acts as Melt Bananna from Japan, Jucifer from Athens and His Name Is Alive (see TOP ALBUM COVERS OF ALL TIME-Rolling Stone). The band recorded three independent releases and underwent a series of line-up changes including the addition of guitarist Jeff Cobb in 2002. Their 3rd studio album was recorded in East Atlanta. The sound of Spectralux was further expanded in the summer of 2005 with the addition of keyboardist Jonathan Whiteside. With 808 and 909 as a drummer and the help of Mike London, the band completed its 4th studio album in November 2005 under the direction of producer/engineer Kris Sampson at the now defunct NICKEL N' DIME STUDIOS (TLC, TRAIN, The B52's). The self-titled album took a fresh, stylish approach to modern music with atmospheres and futuristic imagery that are uniquely Spectralux. 2006 brought the release of the album and the addition of veteran drummer Patrick Boggs. Friday, October 1st is the Quick & Easy Boys

The Quick & Easy Boys will be headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Friday, October 1st, 2010

The Quick & Easy Boys’ highly anticipated second full-length album, Red Light Rabbit, is an amalgamation of funk, psychedelic rock, and garage-soul with a slight pinch of honky-tonk. Imagine the Minutemen, Funkadelic and Willie Nelson rolled into one. Also, these new recordings highlight the undeniable talents of this power trio who have been packing Northwest venues for the past few years.

Formed in 2005, The Quick & Easy Boys quickly made a name for themselves in Eugene, Oregon before heading north and building a Portland, OR fanbase. Their shows are an interactive party with electrifying stage antics and profound musical moments as the trio pours out every ounce of their energy, leaving nothing behind. The band has gained the reputation for moving a crowd all-night long whether it be a big festival or a tiny watering hole. The core members – - Jimmy Russell on guitar, Sean Badders on bass, and Michael Goetz on drums – - have continued to evolve musically…and audiences continue their enthusiastic calling of “Yeah Bud!” at every show.

In 2008, they released Bad Decisions With Good People which left people raving about their unique and vibrant sound, and in September of 2009, they sojourned out on their first United States tour. Two national tours are now planned for 2010 in support of their new release. They’ve opened both locally and nationally for The Bridge, Iglu & Hartly, The Pimps of Joytime, Southern Culture on the Skids, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Bob Wayne & the Outlaw Carnies, Vince Herman, Scott Law and Shanti Groove.

The Quick & Easy Boys’ high-energy thought-provoking original music provides a bounce to the step that only dancing can cure. So if you’re tired of the same old sounds and looking for the next up-and-coming thing, The Quick & Easy Boys’ newest release, Red Light Rabbit, is sure to give you a run for your money.

Wowser Bowser are performing second.

"'To the Pleasant Life!" intones Pettis, sounding like Bowser if he was actually Charles Foster Kane, and Mario was this plumber that reminded him of the solitary despondency of wealth. But then Mario becomes a charity project, invited to "kick it" and get on a train like it was before sunrise on a bucket list. Juxtaposed with the mdma bubbles they're embedded in it comes off like a spirit guide on the world of tomorrow ride at epcot, layering gurgling synths on top of what sounds like a keytar if it were actually a guitar shaped like a korg. Thursday, September 30th is Wavves

Tight Bros presents Wavves on Thursday, September 30th at the Drunken Unicorn.

"Named for his fear of the ocean, Wavves, the skuzzy project of San Diego slacker Nathan Williams, is a blend of distorted no-fi and refined sunshiny melodies. Charmingly messy, most of his lyrics, while difficult to decipher, generally revolve around the subjects of weed, boredom, and the beach -- when he isn't poking jabs at the gloomy subculture of goth rock (a common theme, found in "Goth Girls," "California Goths," "Summer Goths," "Surf Goths," and "Beach Goths"). Wavves was conceived just after Williams, at age 21, quit his job as a clerk at Music Trader, while he was dividing his free time between skateboarding, writing for his hip-hop blog, Ghost Ramp, and making music using an '80s Tascam cassette recorder and Garage Band software. Due to his inexperience with the program, the result of one month's worth of bedroom recording sessions was two full albums of songs: all completely mangled by overdriven inputs. Rather than scrapping the material, he embraced the in-the-red aesthetic and started promoting the songs online. Wavves was quickly embraced and touted as "the next big thing" by Internet music critics and fellow bloggers.

Many praised the immediacy and D.I.Y. nature of his work, and Williams capitalized on those aspects, continuously uploading free digital versions of his music -- including two 7" singles, a cassette, and an EP -- all with simple self-drawn artwork or scanned photos for cover art. Wavves' first LP, simply titled Wavves, became available around this time as well, and it was released in a limited run by Woodsist. The more confusingly titled Wavvves (note the third "V") followed just after, and was planned for release by De Stijl before Williams jumped ship to Fat Possum. After the track list was revamped, the release date was pushed back a month and Wavvves was officially made available on March 17, 2009. After receiving mostly glowing reviews in April, Wavves got his share of bad press in late May. While performing live at the Primavera Sound Festival, assisted by drummer Ryan Ulsh, Williams had a minor meltdown and walked offstage. Williams later issued an apology, chalking up the incident to poor decision-making and a drug concoction of ecstasy, Valium, and Xanax. In 2010, after recording some tracks with indie drummer extraordinaire Zach Hill, Williams entered the studio with Grammy-winning producer Dennis Herring to record a straightforward and surprisingly polished album. Following the August release of King of the Beach, Wavves toured as a trio with Williams assisted by former members of the late Jay Reatard's band, bassist Stephen Pope and drummer Billy Hayes." - Jason Lymangrover

Christmas Island will be performing third.

Hailing from sunny San Diego, California, Christmas Island plays music that on the surface is happy and poppy. There is a dark undercurrent to their brand of lo-fi Pop/Punk--it is joyous and almost twee while secretly depressed and deeply disturbed. Citing Tronics, Urinals, Television Personalities, The Clean, Versatile Newts, and The Fall as influences, Christmas Island is Beach Boys-style, sunny Southern Californian pop by way of the late-'70s/early-'80s UK DIY scene.

Josiah Wolf is the opener.

Josiah Wolf, like his younger brother and WHY? bandmate Yoni, has never been able to escape the call of music. His father, a Cincinnati rabbi, taught him drums at the age of 9, so that curly-haired kid could provide the backbeat for worship service. Later, he’d dabble in darker arts (i.e. grunge) and fall in love with the hard bop of Thelonious Monk on his way to the University Of Cincinnati’s music conservatory. In college, the Wolf boys made fast friends with then-unknowns like Doseone and Odd Nosdam. The formative Greenthink experiments eventually led to the legendary cLOUDDEAD trio, and Josiah coproducing the group’s “JimmyBreeze” 10-inch. It hadn’t previously occurred to Josiah to write or sing, but Yoni’s outsider M.O. spurred him on, resulting in 2003’s lo-fi and long out-of-print The Josiah EP. Inspired, he moved out west to become an integral part of WHY?’s rebirth as a full band. In 2006, he bought a guitar and began to teach himself Silver Jews songs in secret. Unbeknownst to even his brother, he took vocal lessons and practiced several hours a day, hoping to coax out the voice he’d always known was there. The lyrics came, and the music too. His obsessive dedication took place between tours, and on them as well – on a week-long stay in Berlin with WHY?, he’d escape to an old graveyard each day in order to play. For nearly three years, Josiah honed the songs that would make up his LP debut. In November of 2008, he settled into a cottage in the woods outside of Cincinnati, ditched the click track and recorded his songs raw. All that lush instrumentation – drums, bass, organ, piano, bells, marimba, vibes, shakers, etc. – came later, recorded to the music’s naturally elastic tempo. In working on the record, Josiah hardly saw another person. Instead, he saw snow, trees, big skies and an old stove burning the wood he’d collected while walking the property.

Monday, September 27th is Guitar Wolf

The Drunken Unicorn and OK Productions presents Guitar Wolf

Guitar Wolf (Japanese: ギターウルフ) is a Japanese garage punk power trio founded in Nagasaki, Nagasaki in 1987. The band is known for songs with piercing vocals and an extremely loud style of noise-influenced punk which emphasizes heavy distortion and feedback. They coined the phrase "jet rock 'n' roll", which they also use to describe their musical style — an energetic cross between the Ramones, rockabilly, 77 punk, and garage rock. The band is part of Sony Music Japan's Ki/oon Records division.

Guitar Wolf has released nine studio albums internationally as well as a live album, numerous singles, and a retrospective compilation called Golden Black. The band members have also been featured in two B-grade science fiction horror movies: Wild Zero and Sore Losers. A collection of Guitar Wolf's most popular videos and live performances have been compiled into a limited edition DVD entitled Red Idol. In March 2005, bassist and founding member Billy, also known as Bass Wolf, died of a heart attack at the age of 38. His replacement in the band, bassist U.G., has become a permanent member of Guitar Wolf and now rounds out the trio which currently consist of band members Seiji (Guitar Wolf): U.G. (Bass Wolf); and Toru (Drum Wolf).

Hans Condor are performing second.

Oh, how lucky a person can be to find themselves in Chattanooga, TN on June 2, 2010? The place was JJ’s Bohemia and it was, as I remember, just your average, everyday open mic. Yeah, right! So, the featured artist that night was none other than Nashville, Tennessee’s own Hans Condor. I sat at the bar at first with my beer, sipping slowly with my eyes peeled and bugging out of my head at the absolute explosion going on a few feet away on the stage. Hans Condor blew me away, they really did. I chatted with the guys after the show and bought their EP and a sticker. Off their EP is this song, “Just Remember Have Fun”. This three piece (Charles, Erik, and Roger) represents the truest possible form of rock and roll – simple, honest and fucking brutal. Hans Condor has a sound that immediately draws your attention because it’s probably the closest you’ll ever get to seeing Iggy And The Stooges back in 1969 or MC5 in all those jumbled “old time” videos of “Kick Out The Jams”. This group of friends comes together on stage with the passion to play and melt your face in the way only good rock and roll can. “Just Remember Have Fun” is anthemic, sad, and also serves as a call to arms. I keep going back to the word “pure”, but it is quite possibly the bestdescription of Hans Condor. On this fateful night in June when I had the honor and privilege of seeing them there were 15 people in the crowd, but you would of thought it was Madison Square Garden. Never have I seen a band make the crowd part of a show more than I did on that Wednesday night. At one point, the singer/guitarist was on the floor, playing like it was his last show, and you know something? – they ALL played like it was their last show ever on the last night of their lives. A band can draw you in by their recorded music and maybe you like them enough to go see them perform. But, sometimes you find yourself in some town, on some random night, looking at a flyer next to the clubs bathroom wondering to yourself what the band advertised is all about. It just so happens that I was in the right place at the right time to catch this stellar, emotional, fun, triumphant, and exhilarating band called Hans Condor. It was the first time I’d ever stepped foot in Chattanooga and I am forever grateful that this band was there with me. -Brad Tilbe

Charges is opening the show.

Mick and Joel reconnected in the summer of 09 outside of Beep Beep Gallery at a Thy Mighty Contract show. (Nearly four years earlier they toured the UK and Ireland together in the hardcore punk band Black Cougar Shock Unit.) Later that night, Casey joined them at The EARL and, over many pints, a common affinity for Farfisa organ punk provided the spark to start a new band. Casey brought Luci along at the first rehearsal and he's been a fixture from the start. Thomas serendipitously broke a string while tuning Mick's piano and subsequent rock talks lead to an invite to join the group.

Saturday, September 25th is the Cassavetes "Faja Blues" cd release show

Cassavetes will be releasing their new cd entitled "Faja Blues" on Saturday, September 25th at the Drunken Unicorn.

REVIEWS OF FAJA BLUES:

"Suddenly, you’re reminded of the way that the Velvet Underground (or perhaps more accurately, post-Velvets indie pioneers like Yo La Tengo and The Feelies) could take a simple, ostensibly uncomplicated idea and make something oddly insistent and urgent out of it...In the end, Cassavetes’ most impressive accomplishment of all might be the fact that they get a vibe across with a minimum of discernible “attitude.” That alone is an achievement worthy of high praise in today’s indie-rock universe." ---- Limewire Music Blog

"...one of the better ones to drop during that time was Cassavetes‘ newest,Faja Blues. Robert Horlick has this raw, emotional, almost magical quality to his music that seems unquantifiable yet potent." ---------- Davey Minor, Ohmpark.com

Ghost Party are the second act.

Atlanta's indie band Ghost Party formed in 2009 when Patrick Boggs (drums, loops), Henry Watts (bass) and Jonathan Whiteside (wurlitzer, synthesizers) began writing electronic dance music as an instrumental trio. After recording a handful of demos, the band's producer Bruce Butkovich (The Futura Bold, Brain Box) introduced them to Marium Khalid (vocals) whose vocal style was the perfect contrast to their music. Realizing they'd found the "right combination", the foursome started writing new songs together and Ghost Party was born.

Conjuring the spirit of classic 1980's electronic bands, Ghost Party crafts their own style of dark, percussive dance floor grooves weaved with sensual and playful vocals sung in English, Urdu, Hindi and French.

PBR Presents on Friday, September 24th the Authors Apology "Better Left There" cd release show

PBR Presents the Authors Apology "Better Left There" cd release show on Friday, September 24th at the Drunken Unicorn.

Five guys, buddies from ways back, get together to jam around some ideas songwriter Keith Bailey had. He had began writing about the what the band members were going through- divorce, personal struggles, being broke, in a word.. baggage. Through that honesty came chemistry. That chemistry turned five guys in a room to brothers united by passion. Passion to have a few hours a week to forget about dead end jobs, forget about debt and the day to day struggles, and at least have a break from heartache pain. Rehearsals reflected it. Shows reflected it. And.. attendance reflected it. We all got baggage, it’s in our hearts, beneath our skin, under our eyes, in our past, and will be with us until we part this world. Bailey learned to tap into his and write about it. They rubbed they’re nickels together and booked some time in an Athens studio to record 8 songs that are a look inside the lives of five guys who'll I'll bet are a bit like you & I. The albums called Better Left There, you can fill in the rest.

Jeffrey Butzer & The Bicycle Eaters are the openers.

Although raised by a piano teacher/church organist, Jeffrey is a self-taught musician/composer. He began playing drums at age nine, then picked up guitar and piano in his teen years and began writing instrumentals. Over the years, accordion, toy piano, electric piano, chord organs, glockenspiel, melodica, banjo and other noise makers have worked their way into his repertoire. His debut full-length album She Traded Her Leg (Lona Records, 2006) was received to great acclaim and supported by an international tour, including dates in Hong Kong, Paris, and across the United States. His follow up release, The Garden of Scissors (2009) continues in the imaginitive musical collagework of his prior release while expanding on new ground, including collaborations with Sanni Baumgaertner of Dancer vs. Politician. Jeffrey's penchant for tribute performances, in which he reinvents the legacies of some of his favorite influences in the manner of John Zorn, have to date included sets of material by Tom Waits, Vince Guaraldi, and an index of the music for the films of David Lynch. Other recent work includes Jeffrey's creative extension into film, including a score for C. Hefner's film Birdcatcher, which curried favor from legendary experimental filmmaker Guy Maddin, as well as a short film written by Jeffrey for his song Lucy 5's Egg, as interpreted by Italian video artist Marco Missano. Such wide ranging habits and capabilities remain continued demonstrations of not only Jeffrey Butzer's eclectic and explorative taste, but also his virtuosic capability and confidence in the creation of new sound.

CC lives and records in Fort Collins, CO. Their new album, "Hidden Lands," is NOW AVAILABLE via TwoSyllable records on CD and LP. Their debut album "In The Dream Of The Sea Life" struck the hearts and ears of internet music dorks, and they have been riding a residual wave of praise since. Their sound and their aesthetic is familiar and unique; they smoosh Pet Sounds harmonies through Animal Collective gurgle and approach the aftermath with naivety and wonder. Their music is both classic and totally modern. A remastered version of 'In the Dream of The Sea Life' was released on Irish label Indiecater Records on August 4, 2009. A CD version was released on October 26, 2009.

This Piano Plays Itself are performing second.

Adair Park recording artist This Piano Plays Itself are back for another jam session with their album As the House... An album with many sides, at times the sound is pure indie-rock, other times it aims more towards the pop sound. Creative Loafing describes their sound as "wide-scoped rock," whatever that means. Interestingly enough, a band that calls themselves This Piano Plays Itself doesn't actually feature a piano as the main attraction of the record!

A much more electric guitar-driven record, As the House..., like many rock albums, has been built with many elements from The Beatles later psychedelic LPs. In just about every of the eight songs, there's a little bit of Revolver. This is a good thing though, because even the weaker tracks are based on the best. Not to say This Piano Plays Itself are on Beatle Piano-player mode, these guys have a sound and feel of their own.

A semi-concept album, with titles such as "Who We Were," "When We Got There" and "Why We Stayed," the LP seems to want to detail a lot about this musical story. Vocally, musically and lyrically, the band seems very focused, but still there lies an element of fluidity in the compositions that set this record aside from other indie releases.

"Who We Were," the most refreshing and commercial track on the album, is pumped with energy and atmosphere. The moody track has a breath of pop, but isn't tied down to any of the genres, allowing it to show all the sides of the band. A bit dark, a bit dreamy, and it's definitely a bit possible this song will break the group through to mainstream success.

The band gets their most whimsical on "How We Left," a mix of rock, folk, and, of course, an accordion. Quite the charming song, even if sonically it has nothing to do with the rest of the album. No matter, what these guys are about is fun. And fun it is!

Other tracks like "Where We Lived" and "What Happened" range from sullen rock to explosive experimental. The record doesn't expand much from there, but with only eight songs on the LP, that's no insult.

The group has already garnered attention for their live shows, making Creative Loafing's pick for best live shows of the week, and with their sophomore album already creative a buzz online and off. No doubt that the boys of This Piano Plays Itself are set to play themselves right into success. - Eric Chavez / Atlanta Music Guide
