40 Hells

"Following in the footsteps of all of our favorite pop influenced punks , 40 Hells brings noise the way we like to hear it. They pull from many of your more well known punk favorites (Social Distortion really comes to mind), but add an element of pop driven soul that makes everything genuine. Don't underestimate though, 40 Hells brings a mass of personality and originality to the stage and to your head so as to leave you wanting more. You really get the feeling that these dudes feel a connection to what they're doing, its history and where they're coming from. On Wednesday June 9th is Wolves & Jackals

Wolves & Jackals

Wolves & Jackals is a destructive, unrelenting force preparing for the apocalypse that will consume us all. Patrons of God's left hand, they incite the legacy of pain and suffering onto mere mortals. Words spoken through them. The gospel of death.

Coming out of Atlanta, GA, Wolves & Jackals fuse together styles from thrash (Slayer, At the Gates), black metal (Behemoth, 1349), death metal (Suffocation, Carcass), and hardcore (Burnt by the Sun, Converge) to construct a driving force of speed and vigorous brutality. LaMar George unleashes pain and torment with his screams and terror through his guitar. Troy Bedingfield lets forth Hell Fire through his solos. Michael Green storms on the drum kit, shattering nerves with every strike. Together, they trigger the bloodthirsty onslaught on humanity that is Wolves and Jackals.

Wolves & Jackals began sometime in the summer of 2009 and features former members of Chopper, Light Pupil Dilate, and Drag the Waters. In the fall, a demo was released and they started their rampant onslaught on meager beasts eager to feel the power of Gods and Demons brought forth through sonic annihilation. Having already shared stages with the likes of Exmortus, Vektor, Fight Amp, The Classic Struggle, Hawks, Phalanx, Sons of Tonatiuh, and Whores, Wolves and Jackals will continue to unleash their onslaught with an upcoming E.P. and Summer Tour.

Phalanx are performing second.

We formed about a year and a half ago, wanting to play thrash metal with a harcore/swedish death metal edge to it, with a lot of other things mixed in. we've had several bass players try out and one who was able to play with us for a while, but for about 6 months we haven't had one. We're about ready to record our first EP, as well as putting out some of our first merch. If you see us on a flyer, come check us out if you're interested in either trying out or if you just love good metal!

Anger Within are the openers.

ANGER WITHIN, (based in Atlanta GA, USA) fuses metal, hardcore, and militant, death-like vocals to create a brutal, non-compromising form of heavy thrash, guaranteed to excite open-minded audiences everywhere. Ignited both by a passion for thrash metal, and an anger at injustice, ANGER WITHIN introduced itself onto the scene in the '90's, and was founded by members Wulf, (Vocals/Guitar,) Oz, (Guitar,) and John, (Bass.) Establishing various rhythm sections throughout the next couple of years, the band headed to Frozen Sound Studios and recorded three demo tapes, produced by Kim Monday, that laid the ground work, for intense, dynamic innovations to come.

ANGER WITHIN broke into the "underground" tape trading scene with these demos. Each new tape emphasized a heavier sound and aggressively focused on themes few death metal bands dare to touch - world oppression, gang violence, environmental distress, loss of friendship - along with brutally outspoken lyrics challenging man's inhumanity to man. Over the years, many people have described their sound as thought provoking, heavy, straight to the point...and ultimately, original metal/hardcore music, with political and socially concerned lyrics.

The live experience of ANGER WITHIN, has been compared to the energy of a SEPULTURA, NAPALM DEATH, or early-METALLICA show. The band has played at quite a few festivals & venues, in several states. Cities include, Pittsburgh PA, Uniontown PA, Charlottesville VA, Washington D.C., Martins Ferry OH, Fairmont WV, Grafton WV, Bridgeport WV, Clarksburg WV, Parkersburg WV, Huntington WV, Wheeling WV, and of course their hometown of Atlanta GA. The band has also performed with national touring acts such as, EXCRUCIATING PAIN, KARMA TO BURN, TWO MAN ADVANTAGE, BYZANTINE, THY WILL BE DONE, ORIGIN, SWORN ENEMY, DYING FETUS, KINGDOM OF SORROW, SOILENT GREEN, MADBALL, PRIMER 55, & D.R.I., just to name a few!

With the three cassette demos and two full length CDs, (both produced by Josh Swiger and recorded at Blues Alley Studios,) under their belts...the band has received mail, and support from all over the world such as, Russia, England, Japan, France, Mexico, and of course the United States. The band has played or been featured on Brutal Existence Radio, WCLG, U92, and has even been on the airwaves in France.

2008-2010, brings a new era, a new chapter for the band. With new drummer Bob, (from the Mobile, AL based band, Dead Zone,) bassist Andrew, & lead guitarist Alex...the band plans to reinvent itself, into a better, heavier, uncompromising, steamrolling unit! Wulf states: "Anger Within has been overlooked & underrated for way too long. I'm sick of seeing all these bands, who claim to be "metal," or "hardcore," but yet, they have no heaviness, no heart, & no soul to their music! I take metal & hardcore, very seriously...it's more than just a hobby to me...it's a lifestyle! With two killer 4 song E.P.'s finally recorded, ("26" by Brian Neely @ Ultragod Studios, & "Fiction To Reality by Ronnie Winstead @ Virtual Adrenaline Studios,) both being released by New Zealand based company, Satanica Records...Anger Within's fight for world domination, rages on! ANGER WITHIN - THRASH 'TIL DEATH!

Tuesday June 8th OK Productions Presents Friendo.

OK Productions presents:

Friendo

"Friendo are a Canadian trio with Women's Mike Wallace as one of its members. The group put out their record Cold Toads originally as a self-released cassette, and St. Ives has picked it up for a limited vinyl run and digital release. "Counter/Time", the opening track on the record, rolls unsteadily on a clanging circular guitar riff and half-spoken vocals." - Chris Bosman / Pitchfork

Yourself & The Air are performing second.

"You've got to admire this band's work ethic. Coming mere months after their full-length debut Cold Outside Brings Heavy Thoughts to Think, Yourself and the Air's second EP Friends of All Breeds finds the Chicago quintet rapidly approaching maturity as songwriters. Although none of the five tracks come close to matching the teetering, breakneck intensity of earlier YATA highlights like “zZz” or “Fuck You, Walk Home,” their newest EP is easily their tightest and most melodically complex.

All the elements that initially drew me to the band are still present. Like The Pixies, Yourself and the Air are experts at building songs around distinct guitar movements that shift seamlessly into one another on a smooth rotation. Best of all, they do it without sounding like a shallow imitation of The Pixies. Erick Crosby's frantic yelp continues to inject energy and tension into even the most sedate of the band's offerings.

Yet Friends of All Breeds also marks a colossal step forward for YATA. They rely less on the bass-snare dance beats of their previous releases, which frees them up to play around with more complex song structures. Case-in-point is the marvelous “So You've Come Here to Mingle.” The song opens with a gently lurching melody, the rhythm section intermittently dropping away while the lead guitars weave gossamer trails around one another. A chorus of handclaps and “Whoa ohs” segue into a signature shift as the tempo picks up, and finally all the diffuse melodic elements collapse into a blazing punk-battering ram. It's the band's most ambitious composition to date.

Keyboardist Jeff Papendorf returns on this EP, following an almost year-long absence. His contributions remain subtle, but add a necessary counter-melody to Crosby's and Nicholas Sinclair's guitar work on songs like “Less is Less” and “My Friends Are in Love with a Feeling.” Papendorf's presence is most keenly felt on album opener “Heart Strings.” The jingling synth expands the melody laid out by Drew Rasmussen's subdued drumbeat and Sinclair's fragile, high-pitched guitar plucking.

The proximity of Yourself and the Air's releases (three in a little over two years) allows the listener to track the band's gradual evolution, their continual stylistic refinement. If they can keep up this pace and maintain this quality of work, then it's only a matter of time before the world outside of Chicago starts to take notice." - Joe Hemmerling

Harper Blynn will be performing here on Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Harper Blynn will be performing at the Drunken Unicorn on Sunday, June 6th

Harper Blynn is comprised of a half-Jewish state champion baseball player from Chicago named Pete Harper, a curly-haired choir boy from Philadelphia called J.Blynn, a first-generation Indian man from Long Island named Sarab Singh and a tall Dutchman by the name of Whynot - yes, that is his name.

J.Blynn and Sarab started making music in middle school. Pete joined up when he met J.Blynn on his first day in college. J.Blynn, Pete and Sarab moved to New York City in 2006. At first, the three lived in a loft on Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn, made up of four cubicle-like bedrooms with walls that only went halfway up to the ceiling. After a year of not liking this at all, Pete and J.Blynn moved to a tiny box in the East Village and began touring the US regularly in a Toyota Corolla (soon dubbed "the Jackal"), and Sarab moved home to Philadelphia to live with his parents.

While Pete and J.Blynn were on tour in the UK, taking trains and hitchiking across the countryside with two acoustic guitars, they received word from their friends that their tiny apartment had become infested with rats. Upon returning and moving back out to Brooklyn, the band started playing every week on the lower east side of Manhattan and quickly generated a loyal fanbase on the strength of their live show. Sarab made his triumphant return to New York, the three met Whynot, and thus, Harper Blynn was born. Out of the buzz generated in New York City, the band hit the road independently and began touring all over the US.

All of Harper Blynn's four band members sing, bringing a unified and powerful emotional energy to the music. Lead vocals are shared between the two songwriters, Pete Harper and J.Blynn.

Loneliest Generation is Harper Blynn's debut album. Recorded over 10 days in New York City, the album was produced by David Kahne (The Strokes, Regina Spektor, Paul McCartney) and Malcolm Burn (Emmylou Harris, Chris Whitley, Kaki King).

Future Self is the main support.

Future Self first formed in late 2008 in Atlanta, GA. The group was spearheaded by songwriters Will Mitchell and Joe Koubek (former members of Boston-based Chet). The music has touches of musical theater, dream pop, indie rock, and sometimes bluegrass. Their songs take inspiration from many artists including Bjork, The Eels, The National, Luna, Regina Spektor, Modest Mouse, Nick Drake, and Radiohead. Future Self reformed in the summer of 2009 after Joe relocated to Florida. The new line-up includes Will, Shim Gartner, Ben Williams, Jaron Pearlman, Kevin Goldstein, and Heather Devaney. With the help of so many different inspirations, Future Self creates a sound entirely unique to them.

Silent & Listen are opening.

"Catchy" - For a band, is it the descriptor of doom, or actually a compliment? Does it mean the song writing is concise and interesting, or simply derivative and too familiar? Well, in any event, with Silent and Listen, they hope you won't care. This is a song band, first and foremost. Nathan Woody (vocals/guitar) has been dabbling with some of these songs for three years. Call them guilty pleasures, but the ideas somehow seemed too anthemic and pop for his former band, which tended to lean a little more garage. So, when that band disbanded in December 2007, it was time to find a rhythm section and record a few of the ideas to see if they could work. Nathan turned to Craigslist. Marlon Rhine (drummer) was finishing up his most recent band and looking to branch out. His ad looked interesting, so Nathan emailed him. Marlon rocked. After only a couple of rehearsals, there was enough promise that they hit Joel Mullis' Fatback Studios and recorded three songs. Those songs were good enough that they decided to find a bass player. Marlon went on an insanely long road trip and Nathan headed back to Craigslist where he found Philip. While not the gospel style he was playing at the time, Philip Mallory (bass) nonetheless made an instant fit. Marlon came home and a devastating rhythm section came to be. A few shows were played, and surprisingly well received. Even the 'bad' gigs. People stuck around. They tapped their feet. So, more songs were recorded. Now they've got their first full length album. As it stands they'll probably play some more shows. Sound familiar? Yeah, it's all pretty standard. Kind of like the songs, admittedly. But no sweat if you want to call them 'catchy'. Go ahead. That's the point, people.

On Saturday June 5th Spectralux will perform at the Drunken Unicorn

Spectralux are playing at the Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, June 5th.

Spectralux takes a fresh, stylish approach to rock music with atmospheric textures and futuristic imagery. Influenced by David Bowie, Pixies and Wire, Spectralux took the stage just before the turn of the century with a handful of songs and homemade props from malfunctioning television sets to dismembered mannequins.

Along the way, Spectralux started using analog drum machines to fill a vacant drummer position which broadened their musical influences to include The Flaming Lips, Can, Catherine Wheel and Depeche Mode. When the vacant drum seat was filled they kept the drum machines, creating modern rock peppered with drum loops, synthesizers and samples.

The Sunshine Factory from Mobile, Alabama are playing second.

The Sunshine factory from Mobile, Alabama, U.S.A. was formed in 2008 by Robert and Ian Taylor. It began as a one man band, using drum loops, recorded tracks with live guitar and vocals as a performance expression. The song writing team consists of the Taylor Duo .Following several east coast appearances and an expanding southeastern schedule the band grew to include a live drummer, Mathew Hendrich and a bass player Sydney Benningfield. Lush layering of live and recorded tracks blur the traditional lines of musical expression as an ever expanding universe of sound is explored by the The Sunshine Factory. They see themselves as part of a new breed of Shoe gaze musicians. They also view themselves as members of a collective movement of musicians who are returning to a glorious genre that saw its beginnings in the early nineties with bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, The Cocteau Twins, Slowdive and Ride. They are intent on remaining true to the foundational roots, incorporating the present and reinventing the future. Joining such acts as Depreciation Guild, Serena Maneesh, A place to bury strangers, The Pains Of Being Pure at Heart, Ringo Deathstar, The Ravonettes, Pilot Cloud and many other innovative and creative groups they are part of a increasing list of musical acts that are driving this energetic and progressive movement.

Gold-Bears are performing first.

Gold-Bears, a twee punk band from Atlanta, Georgia, make joyful noise influenced by love, jangly guitars, fuzz pedals, reverb, words, spastic drumming, and friends. Jeremy Underwood, formerly of Plastic Mastery (Magic Marker Records) and the French Horns (Clairecords), formed Gold-Bears with Erich Luedtke, Dave Fortner, and Santiago Archila in fall 2009 to record & perform the songs he’d stockpiled during a 5 year sabbatical from music. The band’s taught, blistering take on pop form has gained them comparisons to Boyracer, early My Bloody Valentine, the Mountain Goats and the Wedding Present.
