Akron/Family are headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, January 14th

Ok Productions presents:

Akron/Family here at the Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, January 14th, 2012.

Akron/Family are one of those exasperatingly unknowable bands. They've concocted an image, all right -- check out their MySpace page or the Young God Records one, and you will quickly be advised that they are "extremely nice, sincere and well-mannered young men from rural America who came to New York City in 2002 to make music." But other than that and the occasional unfounded rumor that they practice a made-up cultish religion called AK (pronounced "ack"), the only way to know these apparently affable twenty-something fellows -- the original lineup consisting of vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Seth Olinsky, from Williamsport, PA; vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Miles Seaton, from Porterville, CA; vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Dana Janssen, from Williamsport, PA; and lead vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Ryan Vanderhoof, from Union Springs, NY -- is through their music, which falls squarely into the freak folk category launched, in the minds of the popular culture anyway, single-handedly by Devendra Banhart.

Bad Weather California will be starting the show.

“Adolf crafts songs that you’ll still be singing as your crawl to your grave…” THRASHER MAGAZINE (feature)

“(Bad Weather California) channels their American angst into clouds of rollicking electric licks and rousing Rhodes, then churns out cheeky optimism for a better world.” PORTLAND MERCURY (feature)

“Bar none, the best acoustic act of the festival. Chris Adolf’s songs range from fun to downright haunting, but no matter what, you’ll be watching in rapt attention… Why isn’t this guy more famous?!” RETRO LOFI (live review – pop festival played with The Mountain Goats)

Siberia My Sweet will be here at The Drunken Unicorn on Friday, January 13th

Siberia My Sweet are headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Friday, January 13th, 2012.

Siberia My Sweet adds post-punk sprinkles to new wave architecture, creating a sound steeped in opposites, as the name implies. Reviews have wrought comparisons to bands like Blondie, Duran Duran and Metric. Vocalist Kelly Andrews has been described as having “…a voice that carries a tune with the likes of Shirley Manson of Garbage and Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs" (Be Atlanta).

Side By Side are the second act of the evening.

"Side By Side's starts off with the soaring pop-rock song, "My Heart." Kittrell's rhythmic vocals are clearly the focus, with a tone similar to Natalie Merchant. "Smile" has a harder edge to the music, though more of a radio-friendly, anthemic pop style, as well. The lyrics read more like diary entries, often tackling the universal theme of love and loss. There's a fine line between poetic and sappy ... Kittrell's delivery helps rescue it from being in the latter category. The band wraps up the EP with its strongest track on the album, the emotional, piano-driven "To the Sky."" - Jeff Hahne / Creative Loafing Charlotte

Soylent Red are releasing "Derelict Sunrise" here on Wednesday, January 11th

Soylent Red are celebrating the release of "Derelict Sunrise" here at The Drunken Unicorn on Wednesday, January 11th, 2012.

Soylent Red is a rock band from Atlanta, Georgia that plays a soulful blend of rock, alternative, and blues. Their music came about organically and on its own, and now they would like to share it with fellow music lovers. They are not limited to one style or genre, giving their songs variety and dynamics. Their original music features alternating wailing and crunching guitar, hypnotic, driving bass, and a powerful explosion of drums and cymbals. They also mix in clean, melodic guitar, funk, and thoughtful lyrics, taking the listener on a roller coaster ride of music from the soul.

Waking The Bates will be the second performer.

"I believe the music industry is completely flooded with bands that fit a niche, but I have something new for you. "Waking the Bates" are an up and coming band based out of Atlanta that is sure to leave you in awe. The five piece bluesy extravaganza is composed of Will Strange (rhythm guitar/vocals), Nick Bach (vocals/guitar/mandolin/piano), Dougy "Phresh" (drums), Kevin Brittelle (bass), and Nick Bell(lead guitar). The "Bates" have blended alternative, blues, and rock all into one melting pot to come out with there own original style of music. I know what you are saying, "What is so original about another bluesy rock band?", well this is whats so original about it, they take the heart of blues, the power of rock, the "sweet" of indie, and the rebellion of alternative and cram it all into their originals like "Buster the Bullfrog" and "Place we can Go". They also put their spin on classic covers like "Come Together" (The Beatles), "Can't Always Get What you Want" (Rolling Stones), and "Creep" (Radiohead). Not only do they give justice to these great songs but they put a certain flare on them that will make you think, "Why didn't they do that when they wrote the song?" For all those people who like to pride themselves on seeing new music first, do not miss the opportunity to see "Waking The Bates."" - Alex P

Wymyns Prysyn are RAWKING the Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, January 7th

PFH Productions presents:

Wymyns Prysyn here at The Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, January 7th, 2012.

WYMYNS PRYSYN kicks a bunch of ass. We wear sunglasses at night. We wear leather jackets....year-round. We smoke lots and lots of cigarettes. We take our coffee black. We drink our whiskey straight. We write songs about the weather, sugar-free red bull, Henry Owings's bbq, ignorant fools who talk to you THREE INCHES FROM YOUR FACE, and our very american friend John who thinks he's actually an irish expatriate for some reason. This tape contains 12 blistering kvlt punk parties in a non-stop assault on your shitty aiwa boombox. Along the lines of early HOT SNAKES or whatever; we really don't care what you think we sound like. Yes, I just used a semicolon. We are from Atlanta and have played in bands before.

Order Of The Owl will be performing here on Friday, January 6th

Order Of The Owl are headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Friday, January 6th, 2012.

With a backstory as epic as their name, Order of the Owl brings some of Atlanta’s most die-hard musicians together in one growling beast of a band. Fronted by Zoroaster’s Brent Anderson, the sound is decidedly metal, but drummer Corey Pallon’s classic rock influence and guitarist Casey Yarbrough’s driving progressive chords give new life to the usual detuned fare Atlanta’s grown so famous for.

Demonaut will be the third band of the evening.

Demonaut are a local Atlanta band who are influenced by Pentagram, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Kyuss, Old Metallica, 16 Horsepower, Sleep, Melvins, Rosemary's Baby, HP Lovecraft, Lack of money and red meat.

Savagist are the second band of the evening.

"Although I’ve seen Savagist about three or four times before, they always seem to get a little better every time. I’m still no huge fan of their straight-forward, no frills style, but it seemed as if they’d played a couple news songs which managed to outshine the rest with improving technicality and attention to detail. Although still not at the level of local prog metallists Shark Heart, they showed improvement and potential. I wish they’d put a little more effort into getting their tone to be less tinny – a feat I previously thought impossible when playing through two full stacks – but it is a minor complaint. Their drummer Jason’s awesome chops held the band into a steady groove through out the set as bassist Steve picked his way into each riff. Guitarists Patrick and Clem played some furious riffage, but always managed to stay perfectly in sync with each other. Like I said, few frills, so they don’t take advantage of the possibilities of their stereo sound with harmonies or dueling solos, but their raw synchronized power made up for it." - The Silver Tongue
