SideStreet KED & The Dungeon Family Presents: Thi!nK N3w...X on Wednesday, May 13th

Featuring performances by:

Sidestreet KED with Dungeoneze, Rico Wade & Pobody's Nerfect

SideStreet is The Dungeon Family's premier west coast artist. Born and raised in Carson, California (a SubUrb of Los Angeles, ie. Compton) The 25 year old Rap Artist moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 2005 to further his musical career. It was only a matter of time befor the Dungeon Family's premier production team Organized Noize Caught wind of the explosive M.C. and took him under their wing. For two years SideStreet was burried deep down in the dirty south, in the depths of the Dungeon, crafting his Sophmore effort "The Present Danger" under the experienced Tutelage of Atlanta's greats. The environment was perfect for his revolutionary street music which is often shunned by main stream listeners because of the raw unadulterated realness of his sound. With songs like "Do Whut It Do", an unapologetic look into the mind of a young father faced with the undaunting task of providing for his child and "Lesser of 2 Evils", a heartfelt rendering of the effects of media and television on the minds of America's youth, you begin to visualise the power that SideStreet displays on his second release "The Present Danger". Now, the self proclaimed "GangLeader" is set to unleash his soul on the world.

Methzula is one of the openers.

Al K!ng is the other opener.

To say Al K!NG is complex is too obvious and requires too little thought. All humans are complex. The thing is, sometimes, there's some question about whether or not Al K!NG is human. He looks, acts and sounds like he was adopted by Mr. T and Elvis Costello... from Andy Warhol's Silver Factory and babysat by Basquiat, waiting on his folks in an after-school program led by Afrika Bambaataa and some nameless Shaolin Master of a 1000 Flows.

Wednesday, March 12th is Stinking Lizaveta

Stinking Lizaveta are coming to the Drunken Unicorn on Wednesday, March 12th.

"The Philadelphia power trio Stinking Lizaveta comes to town celebrating the release of an intense new record, "Sacrifice and Bliss." The band, which takes its name from a mute character in Dostoyeveky's "The Brothers Karamazov," plays heavy instrumental rock that meshes complicated and precise prog-rock passages, gloomy riffs in the Black Sabbath vein, and occasional free-jazz blowouts. Led by the melodic guitar playing of Yanni Papadopoulos and backed by a frenetic rhythm section made up of Papadopoulos's brother Alexi, on bass, and the drumer Cheshire Agusta, the group has been a linchpin in the vibrant West Philly underground since its founding, fifteen years ago. They are uncompromising in the best sense of the word." - New Yorker event listings, June 1, 2009 Cake Shop, May 30

"MILES FROM PANGAEA seamlessly blends influences ranging from Frank Zappa, Pink Floyd, and The Mahavishnu Orchestra to bring forth their original sound of instrumental psychedelic jazz fusion. With their recent addition of saxophone to the mix, the sound is strengthened and is a force to be reckoned with." - SSE

The Moog are playing here on Sunday, May 9th

The Moog from Budapest, Hungary are playing here on Sunday, May 9th

When Budapest’s THE MOOG started to play music, they had no idea that they were about to set off on a journey that would eventually whisk them far across the seas, release them into a whirlwind of rock ‘n’ roll and land them on America’s doorstep as one of the first Hungarian rock bands signed to an American label. THE MOOG are an explosive combination of alternative rock, 60s garage, and art punk/pop made unique by the band’s catchy Eastern European rock ‘n roll touch.

The new single, “You Raised A Vampire” is being released on 7" clear gold vinyl and is the ultimate garage-goth dance rocker for the 21st Century, with its dramatic interplay of theatrical vocals, Moog synthesizer hooks, double-picked electric guitars and disco-infused hi-hat and drum action. The song is an ode to romantic love with vampiric aspirations and re-introduces The Moog to the world as the premier rock band from Eastern Europe.

If the A-side doesn't leave a deep bite mark in the neck of the current rock scene, how about a Bauhaus classic for the B-side? THE MOOG sinks their teeth into “The Passion Of Lovers” – the UK band’s 1981 gem - and make it their own. Their arrangement so impressed Bauhaus/Love & Rockets bassist/vocalist David J that he joined in and added backing vocals, bass harmonica, and the stamp of art-rock authenticity that only an original Bauhaus member can provide.

The Photo Atlas are providing main support.

The beauty behind The Photo Atlas is the brotherhood that encompasses the band. It was this relationship that was the adhesive behind the massive sound on their most recent EP "To Silently Provoke The Ghost." 2009. The group’s music blends the angularity and drive of Fugazi, the gut-punch of At The Drive-In and the infectiousness of The Faint all into one explosive little package

The Photo Atlas's dynamic indie dance rock tracks are coated with vital melodies, explosive guitar riffs and demanding drum beats, which bring a sense of movement to each song. The Photo Atlas have been keeping busy since their previous album release "No, Not Me, Never"2008 playing festivals such as the Monolith Festival,as well as the Mile High Festival, Warped Tour, SXSW, CMJ, and XGAMES. The Photo Atlas have kept a rigorous touring schedule playing over 200 shows in 2008 and touring with the likes of The Bravery, Portugal. The Man, and Scary Kids Scaring Kids.

The band recently celebrated the release of a split EP "Friendship EP" with fellow denver band The Epilogues and are gearing up to record a 2nd full length record.

"The Photo Altas is the result of uprotected sex between The Faint and At The Drive-In, although The Photo Atlas don’t sound derivative of either." - Alternative Press

"one of twenty-two underground bands that likely won't stay underground for long." Alternative Press

"The Photo Atlas sports an aggressive indie punk sound... a frenetic Brit rock dance punk amalgam, a blazing cross between Fugazi and Gang of Four." - Amplifier

"The Photo Atlas are getting better with every release. Their mixture of Faint hyperactivity and pop choruses has truly blossomed since No, Not Me, Never." -Absolute Punk

"Sharp-edged post-punk a la Franz Ferdinand and The Rapture is at its most vulnerable in the Photo Atlas." - ABC News

"sounds like the love child of Ima Robot and The Used. No, Not Me, Never is fused frazzled guitars."-Spin.com

The openers are The Debutaunts

The best artists have always torn up boundaries of genre and style, bridging musical realms to create a sound uniquely their own. On their new album, Why Can’t We Have Fun, Debutaunts, the Atlanta based quartet, take the smarts and edge of the underground and drop them in infectious, powerful and undeniable songs that immediately distinguish the band as one of the few that can marry progressive and pop successfully.

Why Can’t We Have Fun resonates with a sense of a band coming into its own and discovering just what it's capable of doing. Inspired by everything from 60’s pop-rock to new-wave and dance, the album is a result of the band’s increased commitment to their craft, a commitment that has seen the band relocate from Florida to Atlanta, leaving their lives in Florida behind to concentrate solely on their music.

Formed in 2006 when lead singer and guitarist Jazek found Jonny Shupert (guitar, vocals) and Stephen Santana (drums) (with bassist Jeff Margaritondo joining later), the band set its sights high from the beginning. Jazek says, “We’ve always wanted to be our own sound. I don’t even consider us influenced by any artists – rather, we take the inspiration we get from great music and artists to create our own thing. That’s what we’ve always done.”

That inspiration comes in many forms. From the Beatles to the Smiths and Stone Roses, to Madonna and Prince to David Bowie and the Beach Boys, it’s clear that the band is inspired by both edge and beauty, which informs the best of its music.

Taking on the work of a DIY band, Debutaunts spent their first couple of years touring up and down the east coast, developing themselves and honing their skills as a live band. During those travels, the band crossed paths with Atlanta-based, grammy-nominated, Platinum-record producer Matt Goldman, who the band saw immediately as a kindred spirit. Jazek explains, “We met with a lot of producers, but Matt really was on point and down to earth. And he’s super innovative in the studio, which is essential for us.”

The first result of the band’s collaboration with Goldman was 2008’s Flowers From Evil EP, which drew plaudits and expanded their fan base. The band, restless and determined to keep creating anew, began writing for a full-length album immediately. “After we did Flowers From Evil,” recalls Jonny, “we were proud of it, but once we were done with it, we were over it. We were listening to a lot of 60’s pop and Motown, and remembered that you can be commercial without being terrible. That inspired us for the next four to five months of songwriting.”

Working again with Matt Goldman, Why Can’t We Have Fun showcases the leap in both songwriting and craftsmanship that is the result of their total dedication to their music. “As Long As You Want Me” pulses with a slinky synth riff that speaks to the band’s modernity, but Jazek’s vocals are melodically seductive in the way that the greatest pop/rock has always been. “Who Could Have Lost You” speaks to the bands inventiveness, with a shimmering string quartet complementing the band as it plays in waltz time. On “Principles,” Jonny gets to display a whole other weapon in the bands arsenal when he takes on lead vocals.

The band is taking advantage of the multi-media tools available to promote the album in their own special way. Jazek declares, “We’re promoting the album as song at a time; every two weeks we’re releasing new content around each track – new video, new photos and more.” Summer and Fall of 2010 will see the band hit the road to make their new songs come alive in front of an audience.

Ultimately, Debutaunts have made an album that has showcased their talent, growth and their immense progression as a band. “We’re so proud of the album,” says Jazek. “Everything about it is a breakthrough.” He concludes by saying, “As soon as we met we knew we had to do music. Everything else fell apart – nothing else mattered. Now more than ever, we’re dedicated to exposing as many people as possible to our love affair with music.” That dedication is abundantly clear in every note of Why Can’t We Have Fun, music that bridges the gap of the subversive underground and the mass appeal of pop; music that promises to crack the Debutaunts future wide open in 2010.

Headlining is South City Riot

"The darkened city was engulfed in flames. The sound of breaking glass echoed across the landscape sending shattered tones of chaos through all ears close enough to hear them. Sirens blared in declaration, a warning of dissent in the city boiled over upon itself. Those in the thick of the upheaval would speak of the ground itself quaking beneath them, threatening to swallow whole the rising vitriolic tide of revolution. Angry, looting bodies filled the burning streets taking all their arms could carry. Fists pumped in the air, a violent show of hands united in mutiny. They had enough. They were tired, they were hungry, and they were taking back what was theirs by any means necessary. All bets were off and numbers were up. The people had become a live grenade, pin pulled hurtling toward their destination, to explode on impact in the fiery culmination of their resistance. This was the South City Riot, and it sounded like nothing else the world had seen. It would not be forgotten."

A swathe of black, wrapped in shadow. Can it be? The hair of the left hand itself, borne on the lips and skewed minds of four individuals singular in purpose. Behold! The Sinister Moustache.

"Never boring or predictable is what makes Sinister Moustache so much fun to listen to. Hypnotic with out of this world melodic thought passages make Songs From The Super-Sargasso Sea just an amazing record. Peculiar? Absolutely. These guys are down right brilliant." -SEAOFTRANQUILTY.COM

"Their style of confrontational, technical, mostly instrumental art-metal is just about the opposite of commercial." -Connect Magazine

"Each song is like a piece of avant-garde classical music they've translated into their own language...there is rarely repetition, rarely a time signature or a tempo that doesn't get flipped at some point, and rarely does Sinister Moustache give their listeners longer than a moment to relax into it. " -Murmur Magazine

Locals Mog Rocket are the opener.

Mog Rocket is a progressive rock band based in Atlanta GA. Intertwining heavy riffs and dark overtones with softer melodic interludes, this trio provides a vast and dynamic canvas to paint its sinister vision. Drawing influence from their predecessors of the early 1970’s, Mog Rocket fuses classic sounds with near algebraic compositions in a style that is entirely their own. Mog Rocket is comprised of guitarist/vocalist/founder Jonathan Beckner, bassist/vocalist Levi Boz White and Drummer Lee Brownlow. Jonathan has a Bachelors of Music from Georgia State University studying under Dave Frackenpohl (jazz guitar) and Dr. Robert S. Thompson (Ambient Composer, music technology professor). Jonathan’s background as both a musician and audio engineer/producer brings a unique sonic and organizational perspective to the music. Levi is a student at the Atlanta Institute of Music and a Savannah College of Art and Design alumni. He provides a distinct brand of songwriting and bass playing, serving as the conduit between rhythm and melody. Lee is a graduate of the College of Charleston. He lives a double life as an ironworker by day and hard rocking drummer by night. His bombastic groove forged out of the fires of hell.

May 2010's Fuck Yesss is Thursday May 6th

ALWAYS NEVER PRESENTS:

ATL'S MOST EPIC INDIE ELECTRO DANCE PARTY: FUCK YESSS

Explodes in your face every first thursday of the month and features the following resident dj's:

LE CASTLE VANIA AKA dj dj Dylan

Atlanta based and internationally known, Le Castle Vania, commonly known as Dylan Eiland, quickly escaped the local trappings of his hometown in Georgia to play music around the world. Atlanta’s burgeoning music scene allowed him to develop his passion for music and nightlife, and he soon gained notoriety with his riotous DJ sets and penchant for production, which made him a household name in the dirty and distorted, indie-electro scene.

Since the summer of 2006, Le Castle Vania has toured nonstop, taking his catchy electro dance beats on the road. He blurs the lines between cultures and cliques, from Mexico City to London Town, with his own signatory sound. He has DJed along side some of today’s hottest acts, such as Justice, MSTRKRFT, Simian Mobile Disco, Busy P, Uffie & Feadz, Kavinsky, Soulwax, Surkin, Para One, The Presets, Steve Aoki and Crystal Castles. However, Dylan prides himself on more than simply pushing vinyl for the masses. He’s also an avid producer and engineer; when not on the road he’s locked in the studio writing tracks from scratch and remixing his favorite bands. The attention he received from his remix of “Black Eyes” by Indie darlings Snowden (Jade Tree Records), quickly put Dylan on the map, the track continues to rock dance floors worldwide.

His signature sound blends grinding disco punk with strong electronic beats and catchy synth leads, resulting in banging electro music that is dark and dirty but somehow equally uplifting and dancey. New mixes to check out include Tigertron, an original work off of his first non-remix release, “Troubletron EP,” and remixes of “Come Out” for 120 days (Vice Records) and “Bombs” for Scanners (Dim Mak Records), which have all received critical appraisal from the indie electro world.

Authors Apology On Wednesday, May 5th

Author's Apology are performing @ the Drunken Unicorn on Wednesday, May 5th

the authors apology formed in 1997 in atlanta (be honest it was actually snellville) georgia as simply a way to keep track of the songs that keith bailey began write and record. he was constantly absorbed in the music that was around him: everything from his parents old vinyl he grew up with, to various influences his fellow music enthusiast and cousin jef siler would introduce to him.

As they stumbled together recreating history through singers and songwriters they had missed out on in the 60's and 70's, as well as making frequent stops to the lcoal record shops for new stuff, they created a band called CLEMENTE (www.clementetheband.com) which would lay much of the foundation of keiths musical endeavors.

As time passed, keith created the authors apology as a meager attempt at creating his own songs on borrowed four-tracks and documenting periods of time and notebooks of real and imaginary characters that began to consume most of his life. after years of writing, going through line-up changes with clemente, fellow band-mate jef relocating to california and australia, as well as a marriage to his wife linda, the authors apology grew from a stack of off-time demo tapes and learning-curve melodies to something he could really stand behind.

With friends casey yarbrough, luciano giarrano, harry baxley, and robert heublein joining him to steady the heartbeat and nurture a growth in sound through percussion and instrumentation the authors apology has begun a new path for anyone who's a sucker for b-sides and cheap dates. sorry for all the things they haven't done.

The Beat Hounds from Brooklyn are the main support act.

"jaw-dropping guitar gun-slinging and powerful emotive vocals...a dangerous, rocking, three-piece band."

-- Kevin Mackall Senior VP MTV On Air Promos

In an age of home studios and pre-programmed music, Brooklyn rock band The Beat Hounds believe in the old-fashioned idea of putting on a great live show and not being afraid to take musical risks in front of an audience. The power trio of Matt Lenny (guitar/vocals), David Jamison (drums/vocals), and James Preston (bass/vocals) use the recorded songs as jumping off points for high-wire acts of musical exploration. As guitarist Matt Lenny explains, “Half the fun of watching a band like Led Zeppelin or Cream is that sense of danger…that things could go wrong at any second, but then they don’t! It’s incredible when a band goes somewhere uncharted and manages to land on their feet. You can’t fake that.”

Armed with Matt Lenny's 60s and 70s influenced tunes and a desire to push the classic rock envelope into more modern territory, The Beat Hounds have been recording their debut album in Brooklyn's own Casa Nova Studios. The 10-song debut will be released in early 2010 on vinyl and digital download.

Peelander-Z is returning from the planet Peelander on Saturday, April 24th.

PEELANDER-Z, the Japanese Action Comic Punk Band based in NYC, was originally formed in 1998 by Peelander-Yellow, Peelander-Red, and Peelander-Blue, after meeting in New York City (although they'll tell you they're all from the Z area on the planet Peelander). Peelander-Green was welcomed in July 2008 after Blue left the band.

Peelander-Z has appeared at major music festivals including Bonnaroo, CMJ and SXSW, and played with artists such as Buckethead, Electric SIx, Particles, The Vibrators, and Guitar Wolf. Peelander-Z has also been featured on TV programs like VH1's Best Week Ever, Comedy Central's Upright Citizens Brigade, Spike TV's MXC: Most Extreme Challenge, and Anime Network. They also often perform at Anime conventions and festivals all over the US, as well as at Kaiju Big Battel.

At their live show, you'll see the band in colorful costumes reminiscent of Japanese Animation, though they describe their outfit as their skin. Their shows guarantee intense audience participation and chance to exercise with the band. "Do human bowling with us. Do limbo dancing with us. Do karaoke competition with us. Hit our cowbell with us," says Yellow. " Don't be shy, give us your smile! We can beat your stress! See you at our show!"

One experience would capture you.

In the summer of 2009 musician/songwriter Tim Kohler and producer Ryan Stang created KID STUFF, electronic dance music with an emphasis on the living, breathing aspects of an awesome live show. After recruiting keyboardist Sam Jacobsen and vocalist Ruti Jones, the group's few live performances garnered respect and enthusiasm from East Atlanta's growing music community.

KID STUFF strives to break away from the typical dance show criteria, where a sole DJ and his equipment is the only source of entertainment. The group encourages the audience to get involved--wear costumes, bring lights and balloons, dance your ass off--have a great time! A KID STUFF show is a celebration of being young and in love with music. Tell your friends!

Brother Ali Breakin Dawn Tour on Friday, April 23rd

The Breakin Dawn Tour featuring Brother Ali will bere on Friday, April 23rd

Brother Ali

"Originally born into Hip-Hop through break dancing, Brother Ali has been one with the mic since he first heard Miilkbone on record. A student of Hip-Hop’s golden age, Ali’s music ranges from purpose to passionate, yet always soulful and true to the boastful heritage of hip hop culture. An emcee, producer, host and overall party-starter, Brother Ali’s talents are a well-defined addition to the Rhymesayers family.

In spring of 2000, Ali dropped a sixty-minute story telling and thought sharing album titled, Rites of Passage on Rhymesayers Entertainment. The self-produced cassette-only anthology introduced Brother Ali’s beat making muscles and extensive writing skills. He played the congas, beat-boxed and still found time to lay out his views on the music industry, religion and urban life in America.

On stage with only a DJ, Ali’s magical gift for capturing the imagination of his audience has been compared to that of a gospel preacher. His voice, large stature and albino features make him a unique and commanding presence. Brother Ali has perfected the live performance, having played countless shows with: Guru, Mos Def, De La Soul, El-P, Aceyalone, Souls of Mischief and Living Legends just to name a few. From September through November 2002, Ali earned his final road-dog tags showcasing his individual skills performing 63 shows in 71 days with Atmosphere and Murs covering North America.

Brother Ali has maintained credibility over time with guest appearances on many such projects as: DJ Abilities’, For Persons With DJ Abilities, Bk one’s, For the Love of Music, The Phoenix with Musab on the Twin Cities Music Year Book 2001 CD, producing six songs on Musab’s, Respect The Life album and battling in the 2000 and 2001 finals in the annual Scribble Jam MC Battles (Ali is featured on three of the Scribble Jam videos: Scribble Jam 2000, Scribble Jam 2001 and the Best of Scribble Jam).

Ali joined producer ANT (of Atmosphere fame) and went to work creating an intensely powerful album that promised to be one of the foremost efforts of 2003. Shadows on the Sun is an eighteen-song album produced by Ant, written by Brother Ali and featuring a guest appearance by Slug (also of Atmosphere). Shadows on the Sun is a testament of Ali’s depth, range and growth as an artist.

Following the release of Champion in the spring of 2004, Ali ran into a number of roadblocks that halted his usually steady recording process. This included him parting ways with his wife, being homeless, and trying to secure custody of his son. Armed with a wave of stories to share, Ali recorded The Undisputed Truth, once again with ANT in his corner. The album is now out." - Edited by MusikSuchtig on 28 Feb 2010, 18:19

Fashawn is main support

"Born in 1988, Fashawn grew up in a virtually parentless home. His father was incarcerated, while his mom was focused on feeding her drug addiction - a combination that caused a boy to become a man quicker than most. Placed in a group home by child services at the age of 12, Fashawn found solace in music, and began writing rhymes to escape the less than desirable hand he had been dealt so early in life.

Eventually taken in by his uncle, Fashawn spent his teenage years calling First & Shields Ave in Fresno, California his home. Here is where he would find skating, the distractions of the streets, and the pursuance of his music career to be more rewarding than school. Yet, he had a constant thirst for knowledge that extended beyond the streets, so he became an avid reader with an affinity towards non-fiction and motivational books.

In 2006, Fashawn released his first mixtape, “Grizzly City”. Catching the attention of fellow Fresno emcee, Planet Asia, Fashawn was invited to go on the road with him. Knowing this was a chance of a lifetime; the then 17-year-old emcee dropped out of school to follow his dreams and has never looked back.

Since then he’s had the honor of working with two of the Mid-West’s premier DJs, Mick Boogie and Terry Urban on the Orisue clothing sponsored “One Shot One Kill” mixtape, and with Hip-Hop internet heavyweights OnSmash.com and NahRight.com on his “Higher Learning” mixtape. Both efforts garnered him nationwide recognition.

Fashawn has also been fortunate enough to work in the studio with DJ Muggs, DJ Khalil, Evidence, The Alchemist, Aloe Blacc, U-N-I, and Planet Asia, as well as on the stage with The Roots.

Recognized as a leader in Central California’s hip hop scene, steering a vibrant pack of young artists with his innovative style and originality in his music, Fashawn is more than ready to take on the world with his debut album Boy Meets World. Produced entirely by Los Angeles native Exile, “’Boy Meets World’ is just a story about a kid growing up,” explains Fashawn. “It’s my story, it’s very honest, it’s very in depth. So whatever you thought you knew about me, listen to this and you’ll really get a good look at who I am. It’s going to be classic."" - Edited by deeljay77 on 4 Mar 2010, 18:01

K-OS is the opener for this show, and he is only a part of this tour in Atlanta ONLY

"Raised by Jehovah's Witness parents in locales as disparate as Toronto and Trinidad, it was no surprise that Kheaven Brereton, aka k-os (pronounced: chaos) was a bit different than your average MC. A singer as well as a rhymer, and a producer to boot, k-os proved on his debut album, Exit (Astralwerks, 2002), that being preachy didn't have to mean being boring. The LP stood out dramatically with lush, instrument-driven arrangements to go with the traditional hip-hop elements of drum programming, samples, and the like. Acoustic guitar and piano marked the single "Heaven Only Knows"; dub and reggae influences tinged "Freeze." Many of the tracks found the rapper singing, so much so that an argument could be raised about the genre to which k-os in fact belonged. And that was just the way he liked it. A tour to support Exit stretched from late 2002 through summer 2003; the dates saw k-os performing with such hip-hop luminaries as India.Arie and Floetry. Exit went on to pick up International Album of the Year at the 2003 Source Awards. K-os returned in September 2004 with the equally ambitious Joyful Rebellion, a record whose sales hit almost double-platinum levels. After writing and performing "Burning to Shine" with the CBC Orchestra (a process that was documented on the network) in 2005, k-os released Atlantis: Hymns for Disco the following year. His fourth album, Yes!, was released in 2008." Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide

BK-One is providing the soundtrack!

"I've been studying music for more than twenty years. I have played piano since I was eight, vibraphone since thirteen, and I started collecting records when I was fifteen.

I grew up in Milwaukee, where I met a lot of my early influences, and played in several bands (doing everything from Fishbone and Meters covers, to Tom Waits-inspired originals!). I studied jazz at Rosevelt Middle School and West Division High. There, I had the great fortune of meeting and playing with many of my heroes, including Barry Harris, Yusef Lateef, Jack DeJohnette, Eddie Palmieri, Josh Redman, T.S. Monk, Wynton Marsalis, Benny Carter, and many more. A huge influence on my musical taste was the large library of records and videos that one of my teachers lent out freely (on the low, he also let me borrow the school's music equipment over the summers).

In 1996, I moved to Minneapolis. Within a year, I met up with Aaron Money (a fellow Milwaukeen) and co-founded the city's first underground hip hop radio show, The Beatbox. Through The Beatbox, I met and formed friendships with many performers, including the Rhymesayers crew, Del tha Funky Homosapien, All Natural, the Living Legends, Aceyalone, and most significantly, Brother Ali.

Ali and I began performing together in 2000.

Since I started DJing in 1995, I have shared stages with De La Soul, Brand Nubian, Ghostface, Rakim, Hieroglyphics, The Coup, MF Doom, Big Daddy Kane, The Rocksteady Crew, J-Live, Freeway, Ice-T, Chuck D, Melle Mel, Aceyalone, The GZA, Devin the Dude, Lupe Fiasco, Umar Bin Hassan (of The Last Poets), Kid Capri, Dillinger Four, El-P, Mos Def, UTFO, Little Brother, The Lox, Biz Markie, Murs, Aesop Rock, The RZA, Lyrics Born, Jurrasic 5, David Cross, Mr. Lif, The Living Legends, Blueprint, Abstract Rude, Vast Aire, The Holdsteady, Immortal Technique, and many, many more...

In 2006, I helped throw The Rhymesayers 10th Anniversary Celebration. I co-created, organized, and DJ'ed the entire two hour long collective performance featuring Atmosphere, Brother Ali, I Self Devine, MF Doom, Felt (Slug & Murs), Los Nativos, P.O.S., Musab, Eyedea & Abilities, Greyskul, Boom Bap Project, Mac Lethal, and Psalm One.

My fist official album "Rádio do Canibal" is available now. The music is all from samples of records I found in Brazil. The rhymes are handled by Scarface, Black Thought, Raekwon, Slug, Murs, Phonte, Grouch, Blueprint, Haiku D'Etat, I Self Devine, Toki Wright, P.O.S., and of course, Brother Ali. The album is co-produced by Benzilla, a talented cat from Minneapolis. Look for it!"

Ludicra on Thursday, April 22nd!

Ludicra will playing the Drunken Unicorn on Thursday, April 22nd.

"The San Francisco-based quintet Ludicra specializes in straight-ahead black metal (i.e., no gothic keyboards, pagan folk influences, or electronic leanings) in a style influenced by bands such as Darkthrone, Gorgoroth, Dodheimsgard, and Bethlehem. The group formed in 1999 and consists of guitarist John Cobbett (Hammers of Misfortune and the Lord Weird Slough Feg), guitarist/vocalist Christy Cather, bassist Ross Sewage (also of Impaled and formerly of Exhumed), vocalist Laurie Sue Shanaman, and drummer Aesop. Their original lineup included another member, Jesika Christ (also formally of the Bay Area death/black metal band Sangre Amado), who is credited with writing some of the material on the first Ludicra album. That album, entitled Hollow Psalms, came out in 2002 on the Bay Area-based label Life Is Abuse. That recording also featured guest contributions from Melynda Jackson (Subarachnoid Space) and Lorraine Rath. Ludicra play semi-regularly in the San Francisco area, where they have built up a strong reputation based on their intense live shows, in which they have shared the stage with a diverse ranging of bands including the death metal quartet Impaled, the post-hardcore/noise outfit Total Shutdown, and instrumental math metallers the Fucking Champs. The band's next album, Another Great Love Song, appeared via Alternative Tentacles in the fall of 2004. Ludicra followed up two years later with Fex Urbis Lex Orbis." ~ William York, All Music Guide

Let The Night Roar on Wednesday, April 21st

On Wednesday, April 21st Let The Night Roar will perform @ the Drunken Unicorn.

Let The Night Roar (formerly Tualatin) lies somewhere between the doom of Internal Void/High on Fire and the elder metallic crunch of Celtic Frost/Venom. The Atlanta power trio contains ex-Malevolent Creation guitarist Jeff Juszkiewicz. Fuzz-tones and sonic amplification backed by solid drum smashing, and vocally somewhere between Kurt from D.R.I. and Matt Pike.

Buffalo, New York's Sonorous Gale will be playing second.

"Sonorous Gale plays thunderous rock music. Neither man in the band is playing as part of some new type of cute baby contest. There is no sonic crest they are swimming toward, taking the ride down, and stealing your headphones along the way. No. No flippant guitar wanking or overwrought vocals crying false tears for false attention from imaginary girlfriends from Hell. Thundering bass guitar and huge rock drums, set in a framework of two men – Buffalo men! – challenging each other and putting together a live show where you are compelled to listen, while maybe gripping a beer or friend. But you listen, and you soon hear what they are to you. " -J Kern

Aquaserge Performing On Tuesday, April 20th

Aquaserge is performing on Tuesday, April 20th @ the Drunken Unicorn.

In french ‘aquaserge’ is a play on words meaning both ‘aquatic Serge’ and ‘what am I for’ ? the group was formed around three musicians: Julien Barbagallo: drums, Julien Gasc: keyboards, guitars, bass, voice, Benjamin Glibert, guitar, bass. They explore certain unknown, or little known, pockets of rock. A mixture of profound influences was thus established ; navigating knowingly between kraut giants such as Neu ! and Faust, anglo-saxon pop, Soft Machine, Zappa. Aquaserge sings an epic tale. A strange, underwater mythology is woven from one opus to the next — that of the charming Serge, survivor and savant, who wanders in the abyss aboard his cigar-shaped submarine.

Supporting Aquaserge is Casper & The Cookies

"Known for their eclectic indie pop and kooky on-stage antics, Casper & the Cookies grew out of a solo project pioneered by the Athens, GA-based musician Jason NeSmith (aka Casper Fandango). In 1996, NeSmith was the drummer for the "philosopher rock" trio Feyerabend, which in addition to NeSmith featured frontman David Dault and future Cookies member Kay Stanton. During a Feyerabend show in 1996, Dault shouted, "This ain't the house of Casper Fandango!," in response to which NeSmith shouted, "Yes it is." Appropriately, Casper Fandango was born. NeSmith adopted the persona and got to work on some songs, which he released on a Casper Fandango & the Knees tape entitled Consumer LP in the spring of 1996. NeSmith continued to toy around with the Casper project, releasing another cassette tape in 1997 (Casper Fandango & His Tiny Sick Tears' How's Your Hand?), but dedicated the majority of his time to projects like Feyerabend and Orange Hat.

The first official Casper & the Cookies show was on March 16, 1999. The band -- at that time consisting of NeSmith, Christo Harris, Ben Spraker, and Kenny Howes -- played at the Gravity pub in Atlanta, with hopes of breaking into the thriving Athens/Atlanta music scene. The following year, the band opened up for Elf Power at the 40 Watt in Athens. NeSmith married Stanton shortly thereafter and moved to Athens, a relocation that would eventually prompt Harris and Spraker to leave the band. The band released a couple recordings on the Lookit Meee! label during this time -- Casper Fandango & His Tiny Sick Tears' How's Your Hand? and the Take It Away, Live in the Lobby EP -- but the band still experienced its greatest success at its boisterous live shows.

Soon enough, a representative from Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records caught Casper & the Cookies opening for the Late BP Helium and Elekibass, which resulted in an agreement to sign the band. After several lineup changes and a couple years of hard work, the revised group (then consisting of NeSmith, Stanton, Phil Stockman, Paul Walker, and Ben Spraker) released Oh in 2004 and went on tour in Japan the following year. Following Nesmith's short-lived stint with Of Montreal, Casper & the Cookies returned in 2006 with a new release, The Optimist's Club, and a new lineup featuring NeSmith, Stanton, and drummer Davy Gibbs as the core members. Released during the summer, the album managed to retain the jumpy, quirky spirit of Oh without the rough-edged production values.

Casper & the Cookies served as the backup band for Daniel Johnston at the 2007 Athens Pop Fest. They also toured alongside the Apples in Stereo that same year, followed by a second tour of Japan shortly thereafter. Although the lineup continued to change, the band's prolific output remained consistent as they issued Modern Silence in 2009." ~ Margaret Reges, All Music Guide

Locals Blaming Tim are the opener

"And Jesus said blessed are the geeks for they shall inherit the earth. Sounds cool to Blaming Tim’s namesake Tim Johnson, who, like Bill Gates, counts on computers for his cabbage. Johnson’s day job as an IBM engineer also frees up evenings to explore his passion for making music, videos and video games that enhance the Blaming Tim experience. “I like to think of myself as a geek,” he says, “which is a nerd with social skills.”

Blaming Tim started four years ago, after nasty girlfriend breakups brought Johnson and bassist Larry Copeland together in misery. The band name arose from a common thread running through Johnson’s collection of Dear John letters. After dedicating to their old flames a five-song EP, Slowly Killing Me, they moved on to other subjects with the kind of goofy, off-kilter charm reminiscent of They Might Be Giants with a dash of Ben Folds’ piano-driven pop.

In 2007, they released their full-length debut, Blaming Tim’s Relapse Adventure. It coincided with the creation of a similarly titled video game modeled after the old Sega Genesis full-motion video vampire game Night Trap. To create it, they employed a collection of talent from their favorite haunt (Relapse Theatre) and wrote songs such as “Vampire Beach Party” to match. “What was supposed to be a two-week adventure turned into almost a year,” recalls Johnson." - Chris Parker / Creative Loafing

Adron plays second.

"Adron is the eponymous debut and stage moniker of twenty year-old Adrienne McCann. Influenced by late ‘60s Brazilian Tropicàlia, Adron has infused her debut with an international texture and a remarkably vintage sound. She adds to her songs a unique array of embellishments, whistles, and mouth-clicks, and a lyrical sensibility both intelligent and whimsical. Adron plays her nylon string guitar with the casually adept flourish of a Bossa Nova maestro twice her age. This becomes more impressive when we learn that the majority of these songs were originally written when she was fifteen and sixteen years old. There’s a double-awareness in Adron’s music that eludes many songwriters; a sense of self-identity and astute observation that allows her to combine the earnest yearnings of a teenage American girl with the classic melodies and rhythms of a musical movement that began in another country, more than twenty years before she was born. Her youthful exuberance and adroit musicianship together form a style both distinctive and pleasing, but it is her rare ability to meld genre, geography, and musical epochs that reveal the true breadth of Adron’s talent. One can easily sense that this debut is but the first notable stirring of an expansive musical journey to come." -courtesy of New Street Records

Nerdkween is the opener.

" "Synergy” shuns glossy editing in favor of refreshingly honest production that reintroduces a much-needed human quality to experimental music, from the clink of the hammers against the piano strings on the track “Icon” to the characteristically charming emphasis Arrington puts on the letter “s” throughout the album. “Synergy” hits high notes on the vocal stunner “If” and the lyrically compelling “Earning My Disgrace,” and provides a nice change of pace with “8 Years,” a live track recorded in New York City at Harlem’s Faison Theater. The self-proclaimed intellectual smartly packages dark subject matter in an accessible manner from start to finish, redefining once again what it really means to be a nerd."- Bitch
