Akron/Family are headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, January 14th

Ok Productions presents:

Akron/Family here at the Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, January 14th, 2012.

Akron/Family are one of those exasperatingly unknowable bands. They've concocted an image, all right -- check out their MySpace page or the Young God Records one, and you will quickly be advised that they are "extremely nice, sincere and well-mannered young men from rural America who came to New York City in 2002 to make music." But other than that and the occasional unfounded rumor that they practice a made-up cultish religion called AK (pronounced "ack"), the only way to know these apparently affable twenty-something fellows -- the original lineup consisting of vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Seth Olinsky, from Williamsport, PA; vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Miles Seaton, from Porterville, CA; vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Dana Janssen, from Williamsport, PA; and lead vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Ryan Vanderhoof, from Union Springs, NY -- is through their music, which falls squarely into the freak folk category launched, in the minds of the popular culture anyway, single-handedly by Devendra Banhart.

Siberia My Sweet will be here at The Drunken Unicorn on Friday, January 13th

Siberia My Sweet are headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Friday, January 13th, 2012.

Siberia My Sweet adds post-punk sprinkles to new wave architecture, creating a sound steeped in opposites, as the name implies. Reviews have wrought comparisons to bands like Blondie, Duran Duran and Metric. Vocalist Kelly Andrews has been described as having “…a voice that carries a tune with the likes of Shirley Manson of Garbage and Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs" (Be Atlanta).

Side By Side are the second act of the evening.

"Side By Side's starts off with the soaring pop-rock song, "My Heart." Kittrell's rhythmic vocals are clearly the focus, with a tone similar to Natalie Merchant. "Smile" has a harder edge to the music, though more of a radio-friendly, anthemic pop style, as well. The lyrics read more like diary entries, often tackling the universal theme of love and loss. There's a fine line between poetic and sappy ... Kittrell's delivery helps rescue it from being in the latter category. The band wraps up the EP with its strongest track on the album, the emotional, piano-driven "To the Sky."" - Jeff Hahne / Creative Loafing Charlotte

Soylent Red are releasing "Derelict Sunrise" here on Wednesday, January 11th

Soylent Red are celebrating the release of "Derelict Sunrise" here at The Drunken Unicorn on Wednesday, January 11th, 2012.

Soylent Red is a rock band from Atlanta, Georgia that plays a soulful blend of rock, alternative, and blues. Their music came about organically and on its own, and now they would like to share it with fellow music lovers. They are not limited to one style or genre, giving their songs variety and dynamics. Their original music features alternating wailing and crunching guitar, hypnotic, driving bass, and a powerful explosion of drums and cymbals. They also mix in clean, melodic guitar, funk, and thoughtful lyrics, taking the listener on a roller coaster ride of music from the soul.

Waking The Bates will be the second performer.

"I believe the music industry is completely flooded with bands that fit a niche, but I have something new for you. "Waking the Bates" are an up and coming band based out of Atlanta that is sure to leave you in awe. The five piece bluesy extravaganza is composed of Will Strange (rhythm guitar/vocals), Nick Bach (vocals/guitar/mandolin/piano), Dougy "Phresh" (drums), Kevin Brittelle (bass), and Nick Bell(lead guitar). The "Bates" have blended alternative, blues, and rock all into one melting pot to come out with there own original style of music. I know what you are saying, "What is so original about another bluesy rock band?", well this is whats so original about it, they take the heart of blues, the power of rock, the "sweet" of indie, and the rebellion of alternative and cram it all into their originals like "Buster the Bullfrog" and "Place we can Go". They also put their spin on classic covers like "Come Together" (The Beatles), "Can't Always Get What you Want" (Rolling Stones), and "Creep" (Radiohead). Not only do they give justice to these great songs but they put a certain flare on them that will make you think, "Why didn't they do that when they wrote the song?" For all those people who like to pride themselves on seeing new music first, do not miss the opportunity to see "Waking The Bates."" - Alex P

Order Of The Owl will be performing here on Friday, January 6th

Order Of The Owl are headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Friday, January 6th, 2012.

With a backstory as epic as their name, Order of the Owl brings some of Atlanta’s most die-hard musicians together in one growling beast of a band. Fronted by Zoroaster’s Brent Anderson, the sound is decidedly metal, but drummer Corey Pallon’s classic rock influence and guitarist Casey Yarbrough’s driving progressive chords give new life to the usual detuned fare Atlanta’s grown so famous for.

Savagist are the second band of the evening.

"Although I’ve seen Savagist about three or four times before, they always seem to get a little better every time. I’m still no huge fan of their straight-forward, no frills style, but it seemed as if they’d played a couple news songs which managed to outshine the rest with improving technicality and attention to detail. Although still not at the level of local prog metallists Shark Heart, they showed improvement and potential. I wish they’d put a little more effort into getting their tone to be less tinny – a feat I previously thought impossible when playing through two full stacks – but it is a minor complaint. Their drummer Jason’s awesome chops held the band into a steady groove through out the set as bassist Steve picked his way into each riff. Guitarists Patrick and Clem played some furious riffage, but always managed to stay perfectly in sync with each other. Like I said, few frills, so they don’t take advantage of the possibilities of their stereo sound with harmonies or dueling solos, but their raw synchronized power made up for it." - The Silver Tongue

Growing up, she participated in Community Theatre, modeling, commercials and talent shows. Milyssa also has been studying with a vocal coach for many years to perfect her craft.

After graduating high school, Milyssa tried her hand at reality based talent searches. She soon realized that being an overnight celebrity was not her path for success. At eighteen, she began writing lyrics and experimenting with different production teams. Time and time again producers did not want to take risks musically. She was looking to be an artist with something to bring to the table outside of the typical mainstream artists. Determined to be a star, she signed to an indie label. Unfortunately, they fell on hard times and she was released from her contract. Finally, she joined forces with J-Tru Productions. Milyssa felt being more involved in the creative process would broaden her horizons and strengthen her skills.

Driven by a punk work ethic, the band has played hundreds of shows across the United States since its beginnings in 2005, and has released two records. Mixing influences from Courtney Love to Morrissey, Alkaline Trio to Muse, The Swear create dark power-pop songs that read like great literature. Brooklyn’s Resonator Magazine said, “theirs is one of the greatest rock records released by an Atlanta band. It’s an album of death and passion, full of ringing violence and gorgeous melodies. It’s edgy rawness balanced by pop perfection from a band that should be considered rock's new great hope."

White Wives at the Drunken Unicorn on Monday, December 19th.

Born out of individual experiences yet a unifying respect for all music, White Wives brings together five friends from varying Western Pennsylvania towns who have as many creative and ideological similarities as they do differences. The quartet is Anti-Flag’s Chris "#2" Barker and Chris Head, Roger Harvey of Dandelion Snow and Tyler Kweder of American Armada, who have crafted a veritable landscape of sounds for their full-length debut, Happeners, released on Adeline Records.

Happeners was inspired by the mid-60s Provo movement, a counterculture movement that used nonviolence and absurd humor to provoke violent reactions from the police. It's a WOWSER BOWSER Christmas on Saturday, December 17th

PFH Productions presents:

a Wowser Bowser Christmas on Saturday, December 17th at the Drunken Unicorn.

"You know how to get a crowd going? Balloons. Wowser Bowser knows that with a little hot air and some cheap pieces of plastic you can unleash the kid in everyone. As you playfully hit the balloons all over the venue that barrier comes down and once again you are a kid, dancing and singing along with the band. Over the past two years I have seen about 100 different acts take to the stage, but few come close to the enthusiasm, energy and dedication applied to their live shows. When the band wasn’t up on stage jumping off their amps, they were venturing out into the crowd, staging interpretative dance competitions between sides of the crowd, having the time of their life all while wearing their festive costumes. It was Halloween and the band came prepared, forming a congruous union of a Big Mac hamburger, a tutu clad ballerina age 7, a large, headless penguin and even a member of Wowser Bowser, as the trumpet player went as himself.

Being outrageous stage personalities is one aspect of a great show, but they came with an amazing selection of music as well, including the amazing show closer “Water Story” which recently received the coveted “WUOG Song of the Day.” Above all, what the band did best was to just showcase their unbridled enthusiasm and the fun they had during the show, excitement brimming from their eager smiles. I’m sure it is easy to lose this attitude after hundreds of shows but its an essential ingredient for live performance, a contagion that infects the crowd. How can you not be excited and want to dance when the lead singer turned hamburger runs out into the crowd, spins and hops around like a drunken karaoke-ist whilst belting out his vocals perfectly. Wowser Bowser may have been a surprise to the largely unaware Drunken Unicorn audience but I wouldn’t be surprised if a few of the audience members walked away liking Wowser Bowser’s set more than the headliner, the Drums." -Will Guerin / WUOG blog

Qurious will be the third performer.

\\\
Qurious is the surprising collaboration between a hip-hip producer/sample collagist and a vocal texturist/muli-instumentalist. Since winter 2009, the pair has taken up casting a sonic net over the patrons of the Atlanta and Athens music scenes.

Whether from headphones or on stage, one is inevitably caught spellbound. The siren-like vocals which lay atop the depths of keyboard/sample-based aural tapestries capture intellects and sway those fleshy physical forms into dance. With compositions as various and interesting as their subject matter, Qurious challenges audiences to follow them through the melodic looking-glass, venturing into a more cerebral listening experience.

Summoning nature-inspired soundscapes in their premiere concept-album: Planet Plant, the group built an enthralling narrative of terrestrial imagery encapsulated in otherworldly vision. The piece served as a brilliant introduction to the band and landed them a Creative Loafing title: Best Ambient Composers of 2011. Keeping things inquisitive as always, the group can be expected to evolve their enigmatic and sexy brand of auditory escape.

Of The Vine are making an appearance here on Wednesday, December 14th

PFH Productions presents:

Of The Vine here at the Drunken Unicorn on Wednesday, December 14th, 2011.

"Every time I think I have a good handle on who’s who and what’s what in the Atlanta music scene, some band comes along and reminds me that I’m probably only listening to and touching on a fraction of what’s really going on. This week’s epic punch to the membrane comes courtesy of post-rockers, Of the Vine, who last Friday held a record release show at the Drunken Unicorn in celebration of their new self-titled EP.

I wish I had some sort of back story to provide you with but all I know is the band has been around is some form or another since early 2005. In 2006, they released their debut EP, the three-song We Took Our Trembling Hands From Our Ears and Their Cries Were Heard (told you they were post-rock). Somehow they managed to fly under my radar for all of six years, which makes me feel awfully lazy for some reason.

But now that I’ve heard them, I’m going to sing their praises. If you are into the epic swells and dynamic textures of post-rock, of music that aspires to climb and cling to the heavens, you would do well to check these guys out. The most obvious comparison would be to Explosions in the Sky and you can’t deny that the trio shares EITS’s penchant for crafting cinematic songs whose ebbs and flows carry the listener on an emotional journey. It may not be storytelling in the traditional sense with words and concrete actions, but within their elaborate song structures there are definite narrative arcs that lead you along and help invoke a certain symphonic sense of place and movement.

Of the Vine’s music is by turns dramatic, elegant and fragile. But when the moment suits them, they can also turn positively thunderous traversing into more metallic territory with muscular grooves and crushing guitars. Simply put, this band destroys. It’s some of the most beautiful and engaging stuff—local or otherwise—I’ve heard all year." Latest Disgrace

Kathryn Calder (of the New Pornographers) will be performing here on Saturday, December 10th

Ok Productions presents:

Kathryn Calder here at The Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, December 10th

Kathryn Calder is one of those artists who belies her age. She began her professional music career as a teenager, and by the time that most people are just stepping into their first independent record store, she had recorded 2 EPS and 4 CDs with the Victoria based Immaculate Machine (from whom she parted ways in 2008), and toured the world and recorded three albums as the newest member of The New Pornographers.

"Where that first album of hers, Are You My Mother?, was incredibly personal and introspective, Calder’s sophomore album is much more open and outward-looking. According to Calder herself, Are You My Mother? was an album that she wanted to record for her dying mother at the time, and that deep personal emotion could be plainly heard, bearing itself on each and every song from that album. As a follow-up, Bright and Vivid finds Calder exploring wider sonic landscapes that range from cutesy synth-pop (“Who Are You?”) to more experimental indie rock (“New Frame of Mind”, “All The Things”). While I usually commend artists for branching out, some of the risks she takes on Bright and Vivid just don’t convince me that she is sold on these ideas either." - Luke Larsen / Paste Magazine

Himalayan Bear are performing third.

On "Hard Times," the third album from Victoria, BC’s Himalayan Bear aka Ryan Beattie exhibits an indisputable level of ingenuity, a fetish for reverb and a voice that is as delicate as it is potent. Beattie may be best known as the front man of Chet or the guitarist of Frog Eyes, but he started making records in his early teens and has amassed a large catalog over the nearly two decades since. It’s his solo project Himalayan Bear which best shows his inimitable talent and remarkable voice, and "Hard Times" is his finest effort to date. "Hard Times" will be released on August 2nd, 2011 by Absolutely Kosher Records.

Much of the album hinges on tension and desperation, but his years of experience show in a subtle guarded confidence throughout the album’s seven tracks. Though the songs may inspire a deep loneliness, Beattie certainly wasn’t alone in the recording process. The chosen studio, The Last Resort, proved to be a social hub of the Victoria scene which allowed for brainstorming, last minute additions and a casual, but creative environment for the album to develop in. Instrumentation ranging from lap steel to trumpet to double bass all made their way on to the record, sometimes acting to ground Beattie’s vocals on tracks such as "Half Wit Son," but also at times drawing the listener into Beattie’s world on tracks like "Man of Fire."

Lucy Dreams will be the second performer of the evening.

"Lovers of noisy rock take note! Lucy Dreams have released their album ‘Vivian’ and they’re still in High School – these kids rock! ‘Skull Mask’ sits squarely in the middle of the nine track release, it’s a spaced out rock tune with lots of melody. The laid back introduction doesn’t give away the energy of the chorus, it’ll get stuck in your head. The scratchy lead guitar break works well against the cleaner sounds too. ‘Skull Mask’ is one of the more sedate tracks on ‘Vivian’, standing out together with ‘VHS’ and ‘Death March’." - Sounds Better With Reverb

Swingset will be starting the show.

Like Teeth EP is the new release from Atlanta band SwingSet. With their fuzzy guitars and catchy choruses Swing Set is making records for people who still think music matters. Originally started as a bedroom projectSwing Set is now a full band consisting of ex-Waterliars/Long Knives rhythm section Thad Goad (drums) and Chris Poma (bass), Mike Copen (guitar/vocals) and Sodajerk frontman Alex Brenner (vocals/guitar). Their live shows are loud distorted hook laden goodness reminiscent of bands like Dinosaur Jr. and Archers of Loaf. The songs are short and sweet taking the Tom Petty method of “don’t bore us-get to the chorus” with no filler. The Like Teeth EP contains three reworked songs from the previous Great Shakes EP and two new songs. Recorded by Ben Price at Studi Laroche SwingSet has captured their raw live sound and infectious hooks that are sure to have listeners singing along.

Baby Baby are headlining here on Friday, December 9th

PFH Productions presents:

Baby Baby will be headlining The Drunken Unicorn on Friday, December 9th, 2011.

Baby Baby as written by Gun Party -

Quit hatin. These dudes are fun. Raucous party tunes. Sometimes feete shufflink , sometimes a touch of metaltastic. These guys like hard work and ball sweat. If you haven't started moving yet, then you are really really running out of excuses at this point. Save your excuses for when you need them, like the next day when you were supposed to meet this cute girl for coffee at eleven AM, which you make but then have to explain your godawful smell because you met her at bible study and want her to think you are something that you are not.
They have an album. That they recorded. Do that.

Manray are performing second and are celebrating the release of their new album "Tournament" as well.

"For the uninitiated, Manray’s sound pulls from math rock, metal, punk, hardcore and even a smidgen of non-boring prog rock." Gordon Lamb / Flagpole

"Manray is one of the newest arrivals on the Athens math rock scene. The members of the band—who hail from Athens (or “Mathens,” as they jokingly refer to it)—perform progressive rock music characterized by abstruse time-changes and atonal chord voicings.
Touchstones for the band include King Crimson, Tortoise, The Mars Volta and local powerhouse Cinemechanica." -John Seay / Flagpole
