Wednesday, January 12th is Beeravore

CANCELLED DUE TO THE SNOW STORM OF JANUARY 2011!

Beeravore is performing at the Drunken Unicorn on Wednesday, January 12th.

Beeravore was formed in 2008 under a different name and with a different guitarist. Ryan played bass at the time. When the original guitarist left the band in late 2008, Ryan moved back to guitar where he belongs, will continued his brutal assault on the drum kit, and Beeravore was born. At the end of 2009, after a few shows with only Ryan and Will, Chris Martin joined Beeravore on the bass. Chris played a few successful shows with the band before decided to leave to persue other projects. Soon after, Kurt Allen was recruited to play the bass and make beeravore once again hole...i mean whole.

Beeravore has played with a bunch of good bands like Brain Drill, Wormrot, Flesh Consumed, Maruta, Arkaik, Halo of Gunfire, Phobia, Eridian, Spewtilator, Synapse Defect and a bunch more but you get the idea. We've played at some cool venues and done some pretty bad ass shit live but you'll have to actually come to a show to see it. Seriously. That or we get some videos...either way...

Olde Growth is the second act of the evening.

Olde Growth is a two piece from Boston, MA with a heavy, down-tempo style that feels right at home in the “doom/sludge/stoner metal” paradigm, while refusing to be contained. Using a limited palate of bass and drums, Olde Growth creates music that evokes the awe inspiring relics of the natural world - giant trees that span millennia, jagged, snow-capped mountains that only the bravest of souls attempt to scale, oceans who’s mysterious depth are as alien as the most imaginative worlds out of science fiction.

Several years in the making, Olde Growth’s self-titled debut weighs in with thick, heavy slabs of sludge, raw brutal energy, monolithic riffs and vocals that run the gamut from piercing screams to soft, nuanced and melodic. Amplifier drone fills the gaps between cuts which, massive like the Redwood giants, block out the sun and engulf all that lies within the radius of their shadow.

Wowser Bowser are performing second this evening.

"Wowser Bowser are giving away their first release, a 2-track single called Water Story. I caught them live for the first time a few weeks ago, and considering how young they and their already enthusiastic audience is, I think this is a group you’re going to be hearing a lot of good stuff about in the future. They are currently readying more recordings to be released, but this title track is a wonderful introduction to a band with a lot of promise." - Ohm Park

Cadillac Saints are the second act of the evening.

The Cadillac Saints is a five-piece southern rock/blues band based in Chattanooga, TN. The band consists of brothers Matthew and Jeremy Walley, Jeff Copeland, Brett Nolan, and Jeremy Muse. The band began with the brothers, Matthew and Jeremy, growing up playing guitar and writing music together.

The addition of bassist and vocalist, Jeff Copeland, came in the summer of 2009. Shortly before fall of that year, the addition of local veteran drummer Jeremy Muse came about. After the first rehearsals, the four realized that there was something special about the journey they were embarking on together.

Brett Nolan, a long-time Chattanooga musician, on keys joined the band in February 2010 for a few dates and became a permanent member the next month.

The Cadillac Saints have in a short time achieved what, in some bands, takes a lifetime, synchronicity and a love for fans that drives them.

To Light A Fire are the opening act.

Although the story of To Light A Fire may seem to have just begun, in truth it began many years ago in the form of a burning passion for music, sown into the heart of a child.

Ben Smolin was born into a musical family and began playing violin when he was 5 years old. By high school, when asked what he was going to be when he grew up Ben would plainly state that one day he was going to be a rock star. "Thinking back, people would always laugh but I wasn't trying to be funny or anything," Ben explained, "I guess people could have taken it the wrong way like I was trying to show off or something. . . . . I just knew in my heart that I was born to play music and no matter what it took I was going to make it happen."

He played in several different projects but his sincerity and drive was not quite usual for someone in high school and the results were often less than stellar. "I remember this one group I started with another guy in my class," Ben recalls, laughing, "I was convinced we were going to be the next U2 even though we had never played before. I got to this kid's house and he told me that we couldn't practice because his parents said he had to mow the lawn and clean his room. I was so excited about playing music that I spent two hours mowing his front lawn and cleaning his room for him. After all that he told me that he had homework to do and so we couldn't practice anyway. I was always getting crushed like that." Meanwhile the answer he was seeking was surprisingly closer than he realized. Tyler Cody attended the same school two grades below Ben and they played on the same snare line together. Tyler began playing drums when he turned 12 but his musical revelation came a year earlier. "I remember walking into this big music store and seeing all the guitars up on the wall. There was this one guitar up at the top of the display and for some reason it just sucked me in. I couldn't stop staring. I didn't know how to play at all," Tyler remembers, shaking his head, "But somehow at that moment I understood that my purpose here on earth was to play guitar."

At 13 Tyler began practicing constantly, working his way through tab books full of Megadeth and Metallica licks. "Name any 80's metal song," he laughs, "I knew it."

During Ben's senior year the two became friends and when their joint love for music was realized they decided to try joining forces. The chemistry was immediately evident although their musical influences were far from similar. "It was interesting," Ben remembers, "We would write a song and I would be like 'How can we make this sound more like Coldplay?' Tyler would be like, 'This needs to sound more like Metallica.' "

After frequenting the local coffee house scene for a couple of months the need for other players became apparent. At the time Ben was dating a girl named Alison who enjoyed singing harmonies. It wasn't long before Alison joined the group, singing and keeping time with a shaker and a bass drum. Alison's inherent understanding of the drums became more and more evident and soon she began playing set, learning as she went. "It was awesome for me," Alison points out, "Most people learn an instrument and search for years before they ever find the right group of people to play with. I got to learn drums specifically to play in a band."

About a year later the trio met Shane and within a couple of weeks he had officially joined the group. "We all knew that Shane was right from the start," remembers Tyler. "There was something about him that just fit. From the time that he first walked into the practice room we all knew that he was meant to play bass with us." With Shane's added influences the group started to write wholeheartedly and began performing in the local bars.

Andrew Flickinger had played guitar and sang in other projects with Ben and after hearing the fledgling group perform at a local open mic night he began regularly attending their shows. "Something about them just drew me in," Flick remembers, "It wasn't that they were perfect or anything. It was more that they seemed to approach the music from such an open perspective. I knew it was something that, if given the chance, I could really add too" He was not alone in his thinking. A couple of weeks later he received a phone call from Ben asking if he wanted to try playing with the group. "I was at the beach with Alison's family and we were sitting in Wendy's," recalls Ben, "I don't know why I thought of it, but I just knew it was what was supposed to happen next. I got so excited that I couldn't even finish my sandwich. I just got up, ran out of the restaurant and called him."

In January 2009, after a couple of months of playing together, the group self-recorded their first CD, a 5 song EP of mellow indie music. That summer they played shows almost every weekend, performing in the surrounding states. The response was encouraging, but as the group continued to evolve musically, the need for a new CD soon became quite clear. In January 2010 the group teamed up with local producer Joseph McQueen (Dos Amigos Recordings), and recorded their first full length CD, Inward Dwelling.

"I think our first EP could best be described as a stepping stone," explains Flick, "We are all proud of what that it represents but its not who we really are. Part of the reason we are all so excited about Inward Dwelling is because it is a record that really does accurately portray who we are and what we are about."

With the CD coming out in a couple months and new plans just around the corner, the members of To Light A Fire like to think that they are on the right path. "I think we are right where we need to be," says Ben, "We have a long road ahead of us but we've also come a long way. Right now everyone just feels very blessed to be a part of this group and to be able to do what we were put on this earth to do: to play music."

Attention System are performing on Friday, January 7th.

Attention System are headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Friday, January 7th, 2011.

ATTENTION SYSTEM has created an institution based on hybridizing the sweaty, three-in-the-morning dance music they love with the guitars and drums they can’t seem to put down.

With dance, darkwave, electronica and punk at their core, Brian Fisher (vocals, keys), Joshua Broughton (guitar, vocals), Jonathan Davis (guitar), Chris Edmonds (bass) and Jason Curtis (drums) have fashioned something new. They´ve created what they only half-jokingly like to call "a rock band that’s mugged an electronica band and is digging through a stolen, dirty pair of pants for extra synth lines."

They´ve been compared to The Faint; Prick; Nine Inch Nails; Does It Offend You, Yeah?; The Presets; and the Editors -- and while the band certainly counts these bands among their influences, Attention System’s music packs a heavier punch while retaining all the danceable elements that make the electropunk genre so compelling.

In October of 2008 ATTENTION SYSTEM independently released a self-produced EP which earned the band generous local and regional radio airplay, plus a nationally televised commercial for the DIY Network. In April of 2010, they released their debut album Wait for My Signal on Surrounded by Light Records to critical and popular acclaim. In just under two years the band has gone from unknown local act to headlining packed weekend shows in Atlanta’s notorious underground rock and dance venues.

ATTENTION SYSTEM’s ultra-high-energy live shows have generated a city-wide buzz based on their unique guitar work, pounding rhythms, and their one-of-a-kind custom built and programed light rig. They were also awarded Readers’ Choice Award for Best New Music Act in The Creative Loafing’s Best of Atlanta (2009) as well as numerous slots opening for national touring acts and a die-hard local fan base.

They’ve spent the back half of 2010 throwing massive dance parties at home in Atlanta and relentlessly touring the southeast. They are currently busy writing their second album, which promises to be a dirty, danceable record full of the quirky guitars and blasting dance beats that critics and fans alike expect from this Atlanta stand-out.

Breen are performing second.

Hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, the enigmatic sounds of Brenn run the gamut to create a diorama of guitar-driven rock that is as sweeping and grandiose as it is grounded and approachable. Having recently released their second EP, “Stack of Fears” (2008), Brenn is gathering attention throughout the country with an unmistakable sound that has been recognized by the likes of Nylon Magazine, as well as a performance on New York’ Fearless Music TV (which described them as "one of the most original acts" on their show).

With dynamic synths, piercing riffs and dramatic vocals, Brenn’s musical vistas sweep from the anthemic sounds of Muse, U2 and Radiohead to the dreamy soundscapes one might find sprinkled throughout Sigur Ros or M83. Timeless structures abound throughout each song, combining vintage instrumentation with flourishing layers in order to create a truly unique musical experience.

:::PRESS:::

"with lush keyboards, soft vocals, and atmospheric electrics, Brenn is stealing the attention of the Nashville music scene and the hearts of each new listener."

Fashion Magazine, New York, NY

"Contagious sound, first-rate songs, and great to work with..they certainly have what it takes to become a household name."

Abby Summers, Morning Host, Chattanooga, TN

"Note to self-Add Brenn to your short list of bands that will change the world."

La Chansons are the opener.

La Chansons is the Atlanta husband and wife, dance pop duo, Greg and Carson Keller. Greg and Carson both grew up in Marietta, Georgia, but did not know each other until they were in college. They then found out that their musical tastes had taken similar paths over the years. Greg grew up on Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails and Nirvana while Carson was listening to Nirvana, Hole, and Bikini Kill. Their tastes turned more electronic in their later teen years, as Greg got into Paul Oakenfold and Carson discovered Le Tigre. From then on they each fell in love with dance music in all it's forms, but their teenage musical tastes still seep into their songs and continue to influence them. La Chansons was created in 2004 when Greg had just graduated from UGA, and his Athens punk band had just split up. Carson was an art student in Atlanta with a life-long fantasy of being in a band. Greg wanted to start a new music project and noticed Carson's artistic talent. In the beginning, La Chansons was comprised of Greg's songs and Carson's accompanying low-fi music videos. As their relationship grew, La Chansons became more of an equal collaboration. Now Greg writes and plays the music, and Carson writes the lyrics and sings. In their relationship they are able to pass ideas back and forth freely, and in doing so they make each other's music and art better. They took their name from an old French children's book found at Carson's parents' house. While their sound has progressed since their inception in 2004, their name, "chansons", meaning songs, still applies. Their focus has always been on writing songs that are catchy, well-crafted, and from the heart. As for the "La" in La Chansons, they still don't know if it's correct or not, but they don't really care. They like how it sounds, and it reminds them of singing. La la la la la!

She Came From Above will be performing at the Drunken Unicorn on Wednesday, December 22nd

She Came From Above is the headliner on Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

A motley ensemble that’s sound might have always been searching for a home has finally landed on planet Earth with a fearless attitude and an apparent agenda of aesthetic plague. The vulgar and determined demeanor of generation Pluto in Scorpio (1984-1996) has birthed a child promised to deliver its receivers to utopia and stain its significance in time. She Came From Above has conjures sounds best described as a montage of punk rock, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, and the often loosely coined label of rock and roll. Doors of intuition open, leading to places known only to those dismissed from the human thought plane, stirring the air, and such a glimpse of enlightenment is received by the sixth sense of the band’s shaman, guitar player and singer, Joshua Overley. The message is then exploited, and the direction of song, ignited by the band’s groovy but explosive rhythm section comprised of Evan Price on drums and Michael Thomas on bass guitar, becomes an eye opening display of imagination paralleled to the disaster you just can’t seem to look away from. The song is then decorated and further, characterized by the painter Marvin Figueroa, often noted as reminiscent of fellow painters Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Jimi Hendrix. Whether taking you to strange places, all too familiar feelings, or anomalies of euphoria, She Came From Above has density of substance that can truly free the human spirit.

Where did they come from? Where will they take you? Perhaps following the phrases “Let go and flow” or “feel, don’t think… use that animal instinct” spoken by the band could send us on the right course. Whether we get it or not, we sure desire the liberation and epiphanies you speak of. She Came From Above, you have our full attention.

Live review of Crowbar's performance at the Drunken Unicorn on November, 29th 2010

"It's a rainy dreary night in Atlanta as the time approaches for me to head out to see the reigning kings of sludge, the almighty Crowbar. I could feel the anticipation building up as I got in my car and headed over to the tiny Drunken Unicorn to meet a friend. I hadn't seen Crowbar since 1995. What was I to expect? For those that don’t know who Crowbar is, they are the reigning kings of sludge metal from New Orleans. "What does Crowbar sound like?" Well, if I had to describe what Crowbar sounds like I would have to say, "They sound like New Orleans. Thick, dark, heavy, muggy yet full of heart and passion." Listening to Crowbar is like drudging through the muddy Mississippi as if it was filled with molasses. That is how I would describe Crowbar in a nutshell and trust me, this is a good thing.

The place was packed and as singer/guitarist Kirk Windstien took the stage the place erupted with a roar from the crowd. Kirk addressed the crowd and then without much of a pause the band kicked right into "Burn Your World." Right away it was apparent to me that these guys still fucking had it. Even though it was a completely different lineup than the last time I saw them, these guys were just slaying it. Kirk addresses the crowd once again by saying, "Here's a really fast one for you!" and then launched into "High Rate Extinction" as the place went absolutely ape shit. I could feel the tension growing behind me as the audience got more and more whipped into a frenzy and then it was just an all out mosh pit. My 37 year old ass was getting banged around like a fucking rag doll and I fucking loved it.

Crowbar was totally melting my face song after song as Windstien slayed us all with his guttural vocals. He has an amazing stage presence and it's completely obvious that he loves what he does. He playfully interacts with the crowd posing for pictures while ripping our faces off. "I Have Failed" from the self titled "Crowbar" album was a real melterpiece but it was "I Am Forever" that really hit me hard. This song drew a huge reaction from the crowd. "Sever The Wicked Hand" from the upcoming album of the same title was another intense piece of Crowbar greatness that proved to me that these guys are nowhere near out of ideas. Windstien has chosen well with his choice of musicians to round out this lineup. Windstien, along with guitarist Matt Brunsen, bassist Patrick Brudders and drummer Tommy Buckley are nothing short of a metal juggernaut that just crushes everything in its path. There is nothing shabby about this line up and I would even say that I liked this one much more than the early Thomas/Strange/Nunenmacher era.

The rest of the show played like an anthology of sorts pulling from the vast catalog of albums Crowbar has released over the years. Song for song it was like a sludge punch to the dome as they hit us with songs like "Self Inflicted", "Conquering" and another new tune called "Liquid Sky And Cold Black Earth" but it was the classic "All I Had I Gave" that completely kicked it up to "11" as the pit went nuts. I stood to the side taking it in and this had to be one of the best metal audiences I have seen in a long fucking time. This is not your kid sister's metal and this isn’t your radio friendly metal. This is true working class metal. Crowbar is the real fucking deal and they have more than an audience. They have a loyal fan base that comes to not only show their allegiance to the band but to show their appreciation. In return Crowbar delivers a show that shows that they are just as grateful and appreciative of what we as fans give to them.

What I loved so much about this show was that I hadn't seen these guys since 1995 yet here I was, 15 years later seeing them and I felt like I just picked up where I left off. I don't mean this in the sense that they haven't grown. I mean this in the fact that Crowbar has a formula that works and by sticking to this formula they not only manage to keep fans for many years but they keep the door open for people like who left for a while but came back only to feel welcomed. It's like reuniting with an old friend over some drinks only to find that nothing has really changed. Time has been good to Crowbar and Crowbar has been good to time. Thanks for still being there guys. I'm back and I'm not going anywhere!
