Batata Doce debuted in the spring of 2007 as a guitar/vocals duo of then-Atlanta couple Russell Owens and Leticia Arioli, performing their first shows at a DIY venue called the I.S.P. space in East Atlanta. Two of the clubs staff members were impressed but saw the need for a fuller sound, and thus the Negotiator Justin Sias (Elevado) and Navigator Todd Morrison (Pistolero) jumped on bass and drums. Former Rock*A*Teen Justin Hughes joined in the fun next as a 2nd guitarist (having previously played with Arioli and Owens in the band King Congregation), and saxophonist Todd Barnett signed up soon after.
The band's Tropicalia-influenced psychedelic garage pop sound is fun!! with mostly Portuguese-language vocals, also fun!! Live shows are extremely fun!! With songwriting from all members, the group has also been known to throw in the occasional Jorge Ben cover, just for fun!!

"The catalyst for Los Buenos was informal at first – neighbors Justin Sias and Stephen Rafter would play a few songs together on lazy afternoons and late nights. Soon, drummer Todd Morrison began to join the casual sessions, tapping on the back of an acoustic guitar, providing the backbeat to the songs that quickly emerged. When guitarist German Monroy joined, the band was more officially formed, and played their first show less than a month after the structured practices began.
Though their sound is arguably laid back and low-fi, many influences creep in, such as the Serge Gainsbourg era of pop and noticeable post-punk tremors.
Members are: vocalist and bassist Justin Sias (ex-Batata Doce, ex-Elevado), drummer Todd Morrison (ex-Batata Doce, ex-Pistolero), and newcomers Stephen Rafter and German Monroy, both guitarists, though Rafter also sings." - Pine Magazine
