MillionYoung will be headlining at the Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, June 12th

"MILLION YOUNG‘s hypnagogic, late night, loping pop loops bloom in the shadows of delirious dream territories; Mike Diaz’s aching, arching, always overhead vocals floating lonely above an effervescent, imagined coastal paradise of found tribal drum snippets, syrupy synth rushing and brilliantly colourful, drawn-out circular guitars that just absolutely refuse to fade or break, shading braincells in never-lived nostalgia; making stomachs shift with strange sickness in a beautiful, unshakeable way." - Transparent Blog

The Humms from Athens are performing second.

Sometimes, you just need a good dose of healthy ass-kicking rock and roll, and The Humms are determined to provide it in spades. They sing about all the traditional topics: death, love and a whole lot of drugs, and do it all while sounding like the ultimate soundtrack to a Quentin Tarantino movie. The four-song EP Are You Dead? is an upbeat romp through simple but enjoyable songs.

The Humms offer a refreshing change of pace from the current wave of drone and half-hearted rock that seems to have overtaken Athens. Their live shows are extreme, high-energy gigs, vaguely reminiscent of the utterly exhausting Flat Duo Jets. The trio is prone to thrashing about onstage, something that manages to carry through to most of the EP.

There is no actual humming on the record. Instead, you find a mix of surf guitar and “to hell with technique” drumming. Each song sounds saturated with the '60s, especially the title track, which sounds like the beginning of a rave from the first howl. The vocals are heavy on the reverb side, making it very hard to resist calling the track trippy.

“LSD Is Evil” is the standout number, kicking off with wild drums and barreling through the song with half-sung lyrics. The trio manages to create a lot of sound, all of which they claim was recorded in a haunted 1950s trailer. It’s a visual image that fits the sound. The Humms are just a really great rock ‘n’ roll trio playing in a van. There’s no pretension, just rock.

Can!!Can get the party started.

---PASTE MAGAZINE ATLANTA---

On the way to the Earl on the night of the 31st, the creepy musical swells provided by Album 88's ambient show eerily coincided with the branching lightning bolts shooting, forking across the clouds above East Atlanta. Inside the venue, the pre-show scene was similar: The low lighting in the Earl's back room revealed a glowing red on the walls and a muffled flurry of browns and grays everywhere else. People traversed the wide floor, ambling back and forth like so many slowed down flashes of electricity in the sky outside.

Local trio Can Can, whose The Holy Kiss EP was released in January, would do nothing to dilute the evening's atmosphere of teetering chaos. Immediately before their set they pulled up and turned on three blinding, expandable pillar floodlights on the stage, leaving us all blinking like deer in their in their headlights. The threesome is dynamic. The careening punk emanating from their one drum kit, one guitar and screaming vocals sounds like it was produced by an army silhouetted against the light.

Can Can could be my new favorite band. I jotted down a note, "somewhere between Andrew W.K., The B-52's, and former local band Love Drunks" before I realized the male singer was indeed Patrick A., formerly of the Love Drunks.

On Wednesday June 9th is Wolves & Jackals

Wolves & Jackals

Wolves & Jackals is a destructive, unrelenting force preparing for the apocalypse that will consume us all. Patrons of God's left hand, they incite the legacy of pain and suffering onto mere mortals. Words spoken through them. The gospel of death.

Coming out of Atlanta, GA, Wolves & Jackals fuse together styles from thrash (Slayer, At the Gates), black metal (Behemoth, 1349), death metal (Suffocation, Carcass), and hardcore (Burnt by the Sun, Converge) to construct a driving force of speed and vigorous brutality. LaMar George unleashes pain and torment with his screams and terror through his guitar. Troy Bedingfield lets forth Hell Fire through his solos. Michael Green storms on the drum kit, shattering nerves with every strike. Together, they trigger the bloodthirsty onslaught on humanity that is Wolves and Jackals.

Wolves & Jackals began sometime in the summer of 2009 and features former members of Chopper, Light Pupil Dilate, and Drag the Waters. In the fall, a demo was released and they started their rampant onslaught on meager beasts eager to feel the power of Gods and Demons brought forth through sonic annihilation. Having already shared stages with the likes of Exmortus, Vektor, Fight Amp, The Classic Struggle, Hawks, Phalanx, Sons of Tonatiuh, and Whores, Wolves and Jackals will continue to unleash their onslaught with an upcoming E.P. and Summer Tour.

We formed about a year and a half ago, wanting to play thrash metal with a harcore/swedish death metal edge to it, with a lot of other things mixed in. we've had several bass players try out and one who was able to play with us for a while, but for about 6 months we haven't had one. We're about ready to record our first EP, as well as putting out some of our first merch. Anger Within are the openers.

ANGER WITHIN, (based in Atlanta GA, USA) fuses metal, hardcore, and militant, death-like vocals to create a brutal, non-compromising form of heavy thrash, guaranteed to excite open-minded audiences everywhere. Ignited both by a passion for thrash metal, and an anger at injustice, ANGER WITHIN introduced itself onto the scene in the '90's, and was founded by members Wulf, (Vocals/Guitar,) Oz, (Guitar,) and John, (Bass.) Establishing various rhythm sections throughout the next couple of years, the band headed to Frozen Sound Studios and recorded three demo tapes, produced by Kim Monday, that laid the ground work, for intense, dynamic innovations to come.

ANGER WITHIN broke into the "underground" tape trading scene with these demos. Each new tape emphasized a heavier sound and aggressively focused on themes few death metal bands dare to touch - world oppression, gang violence, environmental distress, loss of friendship - along with brutally outspoken lyrics challenging man's inhumanity to man. Over the years, many people have described their sound as thought provoking, heavy, straight to the point...and ultimately, original metal/hardcore music, with political and socially concerned lyrics.

The live experience of ANGER WITHIN, has been compared to the energy of a SEPULTURA, NAPALM DEATH, or early-METALLICA show. The band has played at quite a few festivals & venues, in several states. Cities include, Pittsburgh PA, Uniontown PA, Charlottesville VA, Washington D.C., Martins Ferry OH, Fairmont WV, Grafton WV, Bridgeport WV, Clarksburg WV, Parkersburg WV, Huntington WV, Wheeling WV, and of course their hometown of Atlanta GA. The band has also performed with national touring acts such as, EXCRUCIATING PAIN, KARMA TO BURN, TWO MAN ADVANTAGE, BYZANTINE, THY WILL BE DONE, ORIGIN, SWORN ENEMY, DYING FETUS, KINGDOM OF SORROW, SOILENT GREEN, MADBALL, PRIMER 55, & D.R.I., just to name a few!

With the three cassette demos and two full length CDs, (both produced by Josh Swiger and recorded at Blues Alley Studios,) under their belts...the band has received mail, and support from all over the world such as, Russia, England, Japan, France, Mexico, and of course the United States. The band has played or been featured on Brutal Existence Radio, WCLG, U92, and has even been on the airwaves in France.

2008-2010, brings a new era, a new chapter for the band. With new drummer Bob, (from the Mobile, AL based band, Dead Zone,) bassist Andrew, & lead guitarist Alex...the band plans to reinvent itself, into a better, heavier, uncompromising, steamrolling unit! Wulf states: "Anger Within has been overlooked & underrated for way too long. I'm sick of seeing all these bands, who claim to be "metal," or "hardcore," but yet, they have no heaviness, no heart, & no soul to their music! I take metal & hardcore, very seriously...it's more than just a hobby to me...it's a lifestyle! With two killer 4 song E.P.'s finally recorded, ("26" by Brian Neely @ Ultragod Studios, & "Fiction To Reality by Ronnie Winstead @ Virtual Adrenaline Studios,) both being released by New Zealand based company, Satanica Records...Anger Within's fight for world domination, rages on! The group put out their record Cold Toads originally as a self-released cassette, and St. Ives has picked it up for a limited vinyl run and digital release. Yourself & The Air are performing second.

"You've got to admire this band's work ethic. Coming mere months after their full-length debut Cold Outside Brings Heavy Thoughts to Think, Yourself and the Air's second EP Friends of All Breeds finds the Chicago quintet rapidly approaching maturity as songwriters. Although none of the five tracks come close to matching the teetering, breakneck intensity of earlier YATA highlights like “zZz” or “Fuck You, Walk Home,” their newest EP is easily their tightest and most melodically complex.

All the elements that initially drew me to the band are still present. Like The Pixies, Yourself and the Air are experts at building songs around distinct guitar movements that shift seamlessly into one another on a smooth rotation. Best of all, they do it without sounding like a shallow imitation of The Pixies. Erick Crosby's frantic yelp continues to inject energy and tension into even the most sedate of the band's offerings.

Yet Friends of All Breeds also marks a colossal step forward for YATA. They rely less on the bass-snare dance beats of their previous releases, which frees them up to play around with more complex song structures. Case-in-point is the marvelous “So You've Come Here to Mingle.” The song opens with a gently lurching melody, the rhythm section intermittently dropping away while the lead guitars weave gossamer trails around one another. A chorus of handclaps and “Whoa ohs” segue into a signature shift as the tempo picks up, and finally all the diffuse melodic elements collapse into a blazing punk-battering ram. It's the band's most ambitious composition to date.

Keyboardist Jeff Papendorf returns on this EP, following an almost year-long absence. His contributions remain subtle, but add a necessary counter-melody to Crosby's and Nicholas Sinclair's guitar work on songs like “Less is Less” and “My Friends Are in Love with a Feeling.” Papendorf's presence is most keenly felt on album opener “Heart Strings.” The jingling synth expands the melody laid out by Drew Rasmussen's subdued drumbeat and Sinclair's fragile, high-pitched guitar plucking.

The proximity of Yourself and the Air's releases (three in a little over two years) allows the listener to track the band's gradual evolution, their continual stylistic refinement. If they can keep up this pace and maintain this quality of work, then it's only a matter of time before the world outside of Chicago starts to take notice." - Joe Hemmerling

Harper Blynn will be performing here on Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Harper Blynn will be performing at the Drunken Unicorn on Sunday, June 6th

Harper Blynn is comprised of a half-Jewish state champion baseball player from Chicago named Pete Harper, a curly-haired choir boy from Philadelphia called J.Blynn, a first-generation Indian man from Long Island named Sarab Singh and a tall Dutchman by the name of Whynot - yes, that is his name.

J.Blynn and Sarab started making music in middle school. Pete joined up when he met J.Blynn on his first day in college. J.Blynn, Pete and Sarab moved to New York City in 2006. At first, the three lived in a loft on Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn, made up of four cubicle-like bedrooms with walls that only went halfway up to the ceiling. After a year of not liking this at all, Pete and J.Blynn moved to a tiny box in the East Village and began touring the US regularly in a Toyota Corolla (soon dubbed "the Jackal"), and Sarab moved home to Philadelphia to live with his parents.

While Pete and J.Blynn were on tour in the UK, taking trains and hitchiking across the countryside with two acoustic guitars, they received word from their friends that their tiny apartment had become infested with rats. Upon returning and moving back out to Brooklyn, the band started playing every week on the lower east side of Manhattan and quickly generated a loyal fanbase on the strength of their live show. Sarab made his triumphant return to New York, the three met Whynot, and thus, Harper Blynn was born. Out of the buzz generated in New York City, the band hit the road independently and began touring all over the US.

All of Harper Blynn's four band members sing, bringing a unified and powerful emotional energy to the music. Lead vocals are shared between the two songwriters, Pete Harper and J.Blynn.

Loneliest Generation is Harper Blynn's debut album. Recorded over 10 days in New York City, the album was produced by David Kahne (The Strokes, Regina Spektor, Paul McCartney) and Malcolm Burn (Emmylou Harris, Chris Whitley, Kaki King).

Future Self is the main support.

Future Self first formed in late 2008 in Atlanta, GA. The group was spearheaded by songwriters Will Mitchell and Joe Koubek (former members of Boston-based Chet). The music has touches of musical theater, dream pop, indie rock, and sometimes bluegrass. Their songs take inspiration from many artists including Bjork, The Eels, The National, Luna, Regina Spektor, Modest Mouse, Nick Drake, and Radiohead. Future Self reformed in the summer of 2009 after Joe relocated to Florida. The new line-up includes Will, Shim Gartner, Ben Williams, Jaron Pearlman, Kevin Goldstein, and Heather Devaney. With the help of so many different inspirations, Future Self creates a sound entirely unique to them.

Silent & Listen are opening.

"Catchy" - For a band, is it the descriptor of doom, or actually a compliment? Does it mean the song writing is concise and interesting, or simply derivative and too familiar? Well, in any event, with Silent and Listen, they hope you won't care. This is a song band, first and foremost. Nathan Woody (vocals/guitar) has been dabbling with some of these songs for three years. Call them guilty pleasures, but the ideas somehow seemed too anthemic and pop for his former band, which tended to lean a little more garage. So, when that band disbanded in December 2007, it was time to find a rhythm section and record a few of the ideas to see if they could work. Nathan turned to Craigslist. Marlon Rhine (drummer) was finishing up his most recent band and looking to branch out. His ad looked interesting, so Nathan emailed him. Marlon rocked. After only a couple of rehearsals, there was enough promise that they hit Joel Mullis' Fatback Studios and recorded three songs. Those songs were good enough that they decided to find a bass player. Marlon went on an insanely long road trip and Nathan headed back to Craigslist where he found Philip. While not the gospel style he was playing at the time, Philip Mallory (bass) nonetheless made an instant fit. Marlon came home and a devastating rhythm section came to be. A few shows were played, and surprisingly well received. Even the 'bad' gigs. People stuck around. They tapped their feet. So, more songs were recorded. Now they've got their first full length album. As it stands they'll probably play some more shows. Sound familiar? Yeah, it's all pretty standard. Kind of like the songs, admittedly. But no sweat if you want to call them 'catchy'. Go ahead. That's the point, people.

On Saturday June 5th Spectralux will perform at the Drunken Unicorn

Spectralux are playing at the Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, June 5th.

Spectralux takes a fresh, stylish approach to rock music with atmospheric textures and futuristic imagery. Influenced by David Bowie, Pixies and Wire, Spectralux took the stage just before the turn of the century with a handful of songs and homemade props from malfunctioning television sets to dismembered mannequins.

Along the way, Spectralux started using analog drum machines to fill a vacant drummer position which broadened their musical influences to include The Flaming Lips, Can, Catherine Wheel and Depeche Mode. When the vacant drum seat was filled they kept the drum machines, creating modern rock peppered with drum loops, synthesizers and samples.

The Sunshine Factory from Mobile, Alabama are playing second.

The Sunshine factory from Mobile, Alabama, U.S.A. was formed in 2008 by Robert and Ian Taylor. It began as a one man band, using drum loops, recorded tracks with live guitar and vocals as a performance expression. The song writing team consists of the Taylor Duo .Following several east coast appearances and an expanding southeastern schedule the band grew to include a live drummer, Mathew Hendrich and a bass player Sydney Benningfield. Lush layering of live and recorded tracks blur the traditional lines of musical expression as an ever expanding universe of sound is explored by the The Sunshine Factory. They see themselves as part of a new breed of Shoe gaze musicians. They also view themselves as members of a collective movement of musicians who are returning to a glorious genre that saw its beginnings in the early nineties with bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, The Cocteau Twins, Slowdive and Ride. They are intent on remaining true to the foundational roots, incorporating the present and reinventing the future. Joining such acts as Depreciation Guild, Serena Maneesh, A place to bury strangers, The Pains Of Being Pure at Heart, Ringo Deathstar, The Ravonettes, Pilot Cloud and many other innovative and creative groups they are part of a increasing list of musical acts that are driving this energetic and progressive movement.

Beard featuring Jason Dove of Plexorjet fame is performing second.

A beard is the collection of hair that grows on the chin, cheeks, neck, and the upper lip, typically of men. Usually, only males going through puberty or post-pubescent males are able to grow beards. However, women with hirsutism may develop a beard. When differentiating between upper and lower facial hair, a beard specifically refers to the facial hair on the lower part of a man’s chin (excluding the moustache, which refers to hair above the upper lip and around it). The study of beards is called pogonology.

In the course of history, men with facial hair have been ascribed various attributes such as wisdom and knowledge, sexual virility, masculinity, or high social status; and, conversely, filthiness, crudeness, or an eccentric disposition. In many cultures, beards are associated with nature and outdoorsmen.
Ancient and classical world

The highest ranking Ancient Egyptians grew hair on their chins which was often dyed or hennaed (reddish brown) and sometimes plaited with interwoven gold thread. A metal false beard, or postiche, which was a sign of sovereignty, was worn by queens, kings and sometimes cows. This was held in place by a ribbon tied over the head and attached to a gold chin strap, a fashion existing from about 3000 to 1580 BC.

Mesopotamian civilizations (Sumerian, Assyrians, Babylonians, Chaldeans and Medians) devoted great care to oiling and dressing their beards, using tongs and curling irons to create elaborate ringlets and tiered patterns.

The Persians were fond of long beards. In Olearius’ Travels, a King of Persia commands his steward’s head to be cut off, and on its being brought to him, remarks, “what a pity it was, that a man possessing such fine mustachios, should have been executed”, but he adds, “Ah! it was your own fault.”

Ancient India

In ancient India, the beard was allowed to grow long, a symbol of dignity and of wisdom (cf. sadhu). The nations in the east generally treated their beards with great care and veneration, and the punishment for licentiousness and adultery was to have the beard of the offending parties publicly cut off. They had such a sacred regard for the preservation of their beards that a man might pledge it for the payment of a debt.

Ancient Greece

The ancient Greeks regarded the beard as a badge or sign of virility which it was a disgrace to be without; in the Homeric epics it had almost sanctified significance, so that a common form of entreaty was to touch the beard of the person addressed. It was only shaven as a sign of mourning, though in this case it was instead often left untrimmed. A smooth face was regarded as a sign of effeminacy. The Spartans punished cowards by shaving off a portion of their beards. From the earliest times, however, the shaving of the upper lip was not uncommon. Greek beards were also frequently curled with tongs.

Ancient Macedon

In the time of Alexander the Great the custom of smooth shaving was introduced. Reportedly, Alexander ordered his soldiers to be clean shaven, fearing that their beards would serve as handles for their enemies to grab and to hold the soldier as he was killed. The practice of shaving spread from the Macedonians, whose kings are represented on coins, etc. with smooth faces, throughout the whole known world of the Macedonian Empire. Laws were passed against it, without effect, at Rhodes and Byzantium; and even Aristotle, we are told, conformed to the new custom, unlike the other philosophers, who retained the beard as a badge of their profession. A man with a beard after the Macedonian period implied a philosopher, and we have many allusions to this custom of the later philosophers in such proverbs as: “The beard does not make the sage.”

Ancient Rome

Shaving seems to have not been known to the Romans during their early history (under the Kings of Rome and the early Republic). Pliny tells us that P. Ticinius was the first who brought a barber to Rome, which was in the 454th year from the founding of the city (that is, around 299 BC). Scipio Africanus was apparently the first among the Romans who shaved his beard. However, after that point, shaving seems to have caught on very quickly, and soon almost all Roman men were clean-shaven; being clean-shaven became a sign of being Roman and not Greek. Only in the later times of the Republic did the Roman youth begin shaving their beards only partially, trimming it into an ornamental form; other young men oiled their chins in hopes of forcing premature growth of a beard.

Still, beards remained rare among the Romans throughout the Late Republic and the early Principate. In a general way, in Rome at this time, a long beard was considered a mark of slovenliness and squalor. The censors L. Veturius and P. Licinius compelled M. Livius, who had been banished, on his restoration to the city, to be shaved, and to lay aside his dirty appearance, and then, but not until then, to come into the Senate. The first occasion of shaving was regarded as the beginning of manhood, and the day on which this took place was celebrated as a festival. Usually, this was done when the young Roman assumed the toga virilis. Augustus did it in his twenty-fourth year, Caligula in his twentieth. The hair cut off on such occasions was consecrated to a god. Thus Nero put his into a golden box set with pearls, and dedicated it to Jupiter Capitolinus.[11] The Romans, unlike the Greeks, let their beards grow in time of mourning; so did Augustus for the death of Julius Caesar. Other occasions of mourning on which the beard was allowed to grow were, appearance as a reus, condemnation, or some public calamity. On the other hand, men of the country areas around Rome in the time of Varro seem not to have shaved except when they came to market every eighth day, so that their usual appearance was most likely a short stubble.

In the second century AD the Emperor Hadrian, according to Dion Cassius, was the first of all the Caesars to grow a beard; Plutarch says that he did it to hide scars on his face. This was a period in Rome of widespread imitation of Greek culture, and many other men grew beards in imitation of Hadrian and the Greek fashion. Until the time of Constantine the Great the emperors appear in busts and coins with beards; but Constantine and his successors to the end of the sixth century, with the exception of Julian, are represented as beardless.
Celts and Germanic tribes

Late Hellenistic sculptures of Celts portray them with long hair and mustaches but beardless.

Tacitus states that among the Catti, a Germanic tribe (perhaps the Chatten), a young man was not allowed to shave or cut his hair until he had slain an enemy. The Lombards derived their fame from the great length of their beards (Longobards – Long Beards – Langbärte). When Otho the Great said anything serious, he swore by his beard, which covered his breast.

Le Castle Vania returns to the Drunken Unicorn with the Third Year Anniversary of Fuck Yesss on Thursday, June 3rd

"Dylan Eiland, better known as Le Castle Vania, is a product of the mid-decade electro-house scene -- or blog-house -- which produced superstars like Justice, MSTRKRFT and Steve Aoki. While many proclaimed the genre was here to stay, it didn't last. Instead, it evolved and quickly replaced by nu-disco, progressive house and dubstep, while others looked more toward a return to form of simplistic indie dance rock, electro and electroclash.

So where does that leave Le Castle Vania?

The Atlanta-based DJ/producer hasn't complete shunned his electro-house past, but he's definitely moved a bit away from it. He's stayed relevant by remixing his contemporaries like The Virgins as well as producing his own tracks and DJing all over the world. He also started a side project with LA DJ Blake Miller called Lies in Disguise." - Miami New Times

Tuesday June 2nd is The Life & Times

The Life & Times is performing on Tuesday, June 2nd @ the Drunken Unicorn.

Since The Life and Times formed, oh, roughly 1,825 days ago and began disarming audiences and critics with unbelievably loud yet relentlessly beautiful music, the main constant for the band has been how uncategorizable they've remained. Sure, they're a "rock band", but one that skirts the boundaries of this word in each song, tipping their collective cap to the giants that loom in each melody.

Yes, they're still moody, spacey, sonically overwhelming, symphonic and always grandiose. But threading these traits together is the same obsessive attention to detail from singer Allen Epley, drummer Chris Metcalf and bassist Eric Abert that was the calling card of Suburban Hymns (DeSoto) and each subsequent release. The music made for their 2nd full length release Tragic Boogie (Arena Rock) reflects a process that's even more detail-obsessed than earlier efforts.

Quoth Allen Epley (gtr/vocs/etc), "We wanted to make the kind of record that a big-name band with a lot of money might make, except we don't have any money. But we said what the hell and decided to do it anyway by going in debt and built our own studio and recorded it in my basement". The result is a record with layered intricacies that rewards repeated listenings. It's also one that heavily scratches that rock itch, ahem, but doesn't drown you in Gee Whiz Factor bullshit.

The time granted by recording without being under the pro-studio-money clock was liberating. Some songs were recorded multiple times, trying different tempos and nuances. Songs like the title track 'Tragic Boogie' reflect an ethos of what they call "pre-post-production", where the idea is to try to "anticipate how we might manipulate the song in post on pro-tools, and then actually perform it that way as we were recording it, and not rely on post to create the effect". After recording , the bulk of tunes were mixed by Jason Livermore (Rise Against, Shiner) at The Blasting Room with the band and their fine-tooth combs in hand.

And though they have made a record for the ages, the live show is the proof. Blisteringly loud, unbelievably lush and brilliantly lit with white light, the sound created by these 3 gentlemen belies their numbers. The muscular 26" kickdrum thump of songs like 'Fall of the Angry Clowns' is not just heard live but felt in the belly. 'Let It Eat' recalls Blonde Redhead in 5th gear at 125mph, anchored by Eric Aberts' headbob-inducing bassline by the time we reach the chorus.

Where '07s The Magician EP (StiffSlack) echoed slivers of Floyd, My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive, Tragic Boogie finds them wearing multiple masks within one song, or even one verse. The majesty of 'Que Sera Sera' reflects an ethos of grandiosity of The Flaming Lips, while songs like 'Old Souls' and 'Catching Crumbs' owe a debt of gratitude to Doves and Interpol. And an instrumental with a name like 'Pain Don't Hurt' is proof that, while they are moody and melancholy, they refuse to take themselves too seriously.

Tragic Boogie, like the best albums made with unending attention to detail and looking to scale grand heights, never gets bogged down by the frippery. What really hits the listener are 12 foundation-changing rock songs that have been woven together with love and that slippery agent, time.

This Will Destroy You is performing second.

"Texas post rock band This Will Destroy You formed in 2005. Members Chris King (guitars), Jeremy Galindo (guitars), Raymond Brown (bass), and drummer Andrew Miller came together under the notion of pursuing a purely instrumental project, and recorded their demo -- which would end up being released as was -- shortly after getting together. The EP, entitled Young Mountain, was critically well received, and the band inked a deal with Magic Bullet Records. 2007 found This Will Destroy You back in the studio working on their January 2008 released full length, This Will Destroy You." - Chris True

It's Elephants are the opener.

With a few pop-stoner guitar riffs, some witty bass lines, a spot-on set of skins, one piano, several horns, and a lap slide guitar, It's Elephant's will blow your mind. Literally. (Okay, maybe not literally.)

This four piece doesn't allow their ambitions to get in the way of their unbridled enthusiasm for making full, heady, and downright lovable music.

Band members include Brent Jay (The Letters Organize), Garrett Range (The Letters Organize), and Justin Shotwell (Charlie Hustle). Jay and Range left The Letters Organize, a band that Dave Grohl once named as one of his favorite up-and-coming bands, after a seven year run and a international tour with The Offspring, and formed It's Elephant's out of its ashes.

Blue Eyed Goodbyes make their Drunken Unicorn debut on Saturday, May 29th

The Blue Eyed Goodbyes are performing on Saturday, May 29th

The Blue Eyed Goodbyes’ songs are a tour of heartfelt heartbreak. Front woman, Kathryn Humphrey, weaves captivating narratives, with a soulful and truly unique voice, that illustrate the odd beauty in recognizing one’s losses. These narratives are steeped in well-crafted metaphors that describe lovers and traditions long since lost, yet she recounts them with a straightforward honesty that is rarely witnessed. The Blue Eyed Goodbyes’ songs can best be described as southern gothic. The sound is derived from a variety of stylistic influences that are paired with the endemic darkness inherent to southern life. Kathryn began this band in the spring of 2009 and assembled a number of seasoned musicians who kindly graced her with their musical presence. The current lineup consists of drummer/backing vocalist Eric Young, bassist Steve McPeeks, lead guitarist Joseph Lazzari, and lead vocalist/rhythm guitarist Kathryn Humphrey.

Mary O Harrison is performing second.

Mary O. Harrison is a singer/songwriter in Atlanta, GA. Her first solo record, which she made with the help of Jason NeSmith at Bel Air Studio in Athens and many others, was released this year by Two Sheds Music. Mary O. plays most live shows with her band, aka the tiny tears - McGregor Button, Tracy Clark, and Govind Dixit.

Lindsay Appel is the opener.

Lindsay Appel is me, Lindsay Appel (vocals-keys-guitar), and four splendid fellows, Mario Colangelo (Tiger!Tiger!) on drums, Steve McPeeks (Fiend Without a Face) on upright bass, Shane Pringle (Tag Team, Grinder Nova) on saxophone, and Matt Chenoweth (The Goldest, Tag Team) on lead guitar.

After spending a few years gallivanting around the north & south east following artistic whims, I've taken up residence in Atlanta, GA. I played solo around town until March 2008, when the band got a'rolling.

As far as sound goes, my blend seems to be rather hard for folks to pin down. In my mind, it's a sultry mix of rock/blues/pop, with a healthy dose of shimmer and *spark*, throw in a dash of cinematic flair + a whole lot of sassafras, and on some sort of primitive level of definition, that equals the music that I write. When the charming likes of Mario-Steve-Shane-Matt are added in, the songs motivate foot tappers and hip shakers, I get to stomp around on bigger stages, and the whole shebang gravitates closer to the perpetual music video parade march I've got playing in my head. All in all, a splendid good time!

The Madeira

The Madeira plays surf music born of screaming wind over the sand dunes of the Sahara Desert, deafening echoes of waves pounding the Gibraltar Rock, joyous late-night gypsy dances in the small towns of Andalucia, and exotic cacophony of the Marrakesh town square. It is the surf music of the millennia-old Mediterranean mysteries.

Chicago's Blackbelts are playing second.

In late 2008, singer/guitarist Kevin Tabisz started putting together songs with the idea of keeping them short and simple, topped off with a catchy hook you'll find yourself repeating throughout the day. Kevin went on the search for like-minded musicians and discovered bassist/vocalist Allan Laskey, formerly of Rise of Man. Allan was also writing songs of the same genre and mindset. With ideas in motion and demos recorded, Kevin and Allan were introduced to drummer Kyle Kruszewski through Frankie O'Malley of The Safes. With inspiration from the great American classics such as Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly, complimented by the 1964 British invasion, the boys wasted no time getting down to business. After one practice, The Blackbelts were formed and there was no looking back! Within weeks of forming, The Blackbelts were already playing regularly in their native Chicago.

MURS lands at the Drunken Unicorn on Wednesday, May 26th

MURS is performing on Wednesday, May 26th

"A longtime friend of Definitive Jux leader El-P, rapper Murs first appeared as a solo artist in 2003, after nearly a decade of working with various groups in the underground. Based in Los Angeles, his first single was released in 1993, and came from a self-released album by his first group, 3 Melancholy Gypsies. The track barely made a dent, but it did catch the attention of indie hip-hop fans in the area. Through time, the group members became friends with Mystik Journeymen, who asked 3MG (their shortened name) to join them when they started the Living Legends collective in 1996.

Between both 3MG and the Living Legends, Murs rapped on several influential indie rap albums, appearing on more than 20 records, EPs, and singles within a seven-year period. When El-P started to pull together his Def Jux label, Murs contacted the producer and told him he would release his solo record for the company once he had the opportunity. His commitments to both the Legends and 3MG often kept him from working on the album, but after a few years of slowly putting together tracks, Murs finally delivered The End of the Beginning in the spring of 2003.

Featuring flashier production than his group projects, the album was more in tune with a mainstream hip-hop record, though projects with Anticon rapper Slug under the name Felt -- A Tribute to Christina Ricci and A Tribute to Lisa Bonet -- unveiled a more experimental side to his artistry. The rapper returned to solo work with Murs 3:16: The 9th Edition, a collaboration with producer 9th Wonder, in 2004. One of the tracks from that album, "Walk Like a Man," inspired a movie starring Murs himself, along with Damien Wigfall. The soundtrack, Walk Like a Man, also appeared in mid-2005. Murs teamed up again with 9th Wonder to release Murray's Revenge in 2006. Two years later, he jumped to the majors for a contract with Warner Bros., which yielded Murs for President, with appropriately major-label features for will.i.am and Snoop Dogg. Another two years later, Murs reunited with 9th Wonder to make Forever." - Bradley Torreano

Sick Jacken is main support.

"Tragedy and Triumph…Two sides of the same ever-spinning coin that rules the game of life. No man can predict when or on which side the coin will land, and peoples’ wildest dreams and worst nightmares come to life with its every flip. Life’s winners are those resourceful individuals who manage to turn tragedy into triumph. The members of Los Angeles super-group Psycho Realm are no strangers to struggle. Sick Jacken with the aid of Cynic (Street Platoon) and DJ FM (Sick Symphonies) emerge as a shining example of solidarity and success against almost insurmountable odds.

Critically acclaimed Los Angeles Hip Hop group Psycho Realm was started by brothers Sick Jacken and Duke in the late 90’s. The group was discovered by Cypress Hill’s front man B Real and was signed to Ruff House/Colombia Records where they released their self-titled debut “The Psycho Realm” in 1997. Over the years the Realm continued on, releasing, two more Psycho Realm albums: “A War Story Book I” in 2000, “A War Story Book II” in 2003, Street Platoon’s debut album “Steel Storm” in 2001, Sick Symphonies present: “The Terror Tapes” in 2006, “DJ FM’s Street Mixes”, and on 9/11/2007 released another classic when Jacken teamed up with DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill to deliver DJ Muggs Vs Sick Jacken Feat Cynic “Legend Of The Mask & The Assassin” which has sold 30,000+ units to date on Jacken’s RMG/Universal imprint.

At the present moment, the group continues to grow as artists and release quality albums into the marketplace satisfying their loyal fan base’s hunger for their style of music. Sick Jacken’s latest installment from the Psycho Realm catalog is titled “Stray Bullets” on his label RMG Street with a tentative April/May 2009 release. This album is dedicated to his past collaborations with artist with whom he shares a common musical bond. Indie heavyweights Evidence, B Real, Immortal Technique, Planet Asia, & Chace Infinite, just to name a few, are featured as well as a few brand new bonus tracks to round out the project.

Sick Jacken is featured on B Real’s (Cypress Hill) most recent solo debut album “Smoke N’ Mirrors” (Duck Down Records) with the fiery joint “Psycho Realm Revolution” reminding true Psycho Realm fans the chemistry B Real and Sick possess as a unit.

Both Jacken and Cynic are also featured on DJ Muggs’s latest Soul Assassins installment titled “The Intermission”. Jacken trades verses with New York based artist NECRO on “Rep Yo Shit” and then teams up with Evidence of Dilated Peoples on the Alchemist produced smash “Classical”. Cynic lends his production ability on “Meet Your Maker” feat: Reef The Lost Cause & Outer Space as well as produced and featured on “World Were In” showing his ability to hold his own as a solo artist. This album is scheduled for a June 23rd, 2009 release on K7/Gold Dust Records.

Future projects that are soon to be in production are: MURS/Sick Jacken Album, PCP, collaboration with B Real, a full length solo Spanish Album, Cynic’s solo debut, & DJ FM’s collaboration album. Psycho Realm independently have nurtured and cultivated a cult following worldwide. Now they’re set to bring their experience & live show to the Rock The Bells/Paid Dues Stage this summer 2009, and continue to build on an already rapidly growing young fan base." - Edited by SAOPP on 22 Apr 2009

Nocando is the opener.

The L.A. underground has many voices, some covered in grit and dirt, some slapping the halt, some hitting high and brassy -- but none ring truer than that of Nocando. A seasoned member of the hip-hop community who isn't content to count his battle scars by the dozens, Nocando brings fresh rhymes week after week at the world-renowned club night Low End Theory where he is the resident host, as well as to a variety of steazy joints all around the West Coast.

With a witty style and open voice, Nocando's raps are unpredictable, funny and lean towards social commentary, although this MC is just as likely to tell you about a wild night on the streets of L.A. as to make a point about the fallacies of the music industry. Brash and confident while also being laid back, Nocando's lyrical delivery is an apt representative of the California attitude. Winner of the MC Battle at the 2007 Scribble Jam, the largest hip-hop festival in the nation, Nocando's mouth often seems to have a life of its own, throwing an excited energy onto any crowd he meets and providing an important connection between the music and the dance floor.

Nocando's debut album, Jimmy the Lock, drops on Alpha Pup Records January 26th, 2010; the initial single "Hurry Up and Wait" has garnered raving reviews from widespread locales and boasts beats from the top of the Los Angeles underground: Nosaj Thing, Nobody, Daedelus, Thavius Beck, Free the Robots, Maestroe, Th' Corn Gang and with scratching by Gaslamp Killer. The MC has also released a myriad of collaborations with artists such as Subtitle, Aceyalone, Murs, Luckyiam, Busdriver, Abstract Rude, 2mex, and many others.

Never afraid to get dirty, Nocando has won (and lost) numerous rap battles. Countless Thursday nights spent spitting freestyle in Leimert Park in the Crenshaw District of South Central L.A. established him as Project Blowed's new school poster boy and a Customer Service hard hitter. The tireless MC has traveled to New York City, Boston, Canada, France, England, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Colombia, Japan and many other locations giving international music fans a taste of Los Angeles' main exports: blue collars, brown skies, bright lights, and bullshit.

With almost a decade of active duty in the L.A. beat scene and plenty of battle trophies under his belt, Nocando has earned the respect of peers, veterans and newcomers alike. Unpredictable and vivacious, Nocando will light any night and every crowd with his clever words and dynamic delivery style. With the continued convergence of the hip hop and electronic music communities in Los Angeles and around the world, Nocando is poised to shout his drops from the peak of the movement all the way to the vibrating dance floor of the underground.

Fang Island is performing at the Drunken Unicorn on Monday, May 24th.

"Brooklyn-based indie rock outfit Fang Island craft impossibly heavy hymn-like anthems that blend the uplifting and accessible hard rock melodiousness of Andrew W.K. and the D.I.Y. recording style of Surfer Blood with the offbeat tech-heavy progressive metal of bands like Protest the Hero and Sparta. Formed in Providence as an art project while the members were all attending the Rhode Island School of Design, the band (comprised of guitarist Jason Bartell, bassist Philip Curcuru, guitarist Chris Georges, guitarist Nicholas Andrew Sadler, and drummer Marc St. Sauveur) released its eponymous debut album through the Sargent House label in early 2010." - James Christopher Monger

Hollerado is performing second.

Hollerado grew up on the same street in a small town in Ontario. There is one bar in the town and on Friday nights the jukebox plays Roy Orbison, and John Prine. One day, while riding the bus, a man in an exquisitely tailored suit said to them “it is not nearly as fun to reminisce about the times you didn’t spend your life savings on four one-way tickets to Japan.” With that in mind they got jobs doing construction. When they were tearing down the old walls they listened to The Who. When they built new walls they talked about time travel. Soon they bought an old van and started a moving company (Haulerado). The van had a tape player and they listened exclusively to the Traveling Wilburys. They hope you have an awesome holiday season.

On Sunday May 23rd is Wheatus

Wheatus is performing at the Drunken Unicorn on Sunday, May 23rd.

"The Long Island-based singer/songwriter Brendan B. Brown formed Wheatus as a vehicle for his witty, energetic rock songs. The quartet began taking shape in 1995, when Brown enlisted the help of his brother, drummer Peter Brown, as well as multi-instrumentalist Phil A. Jimenez and bassist Rich Leigey (replaced in July 2000 by Mike McCabe). The musicians recorded their self-titled debut album in the Brown home, helming the production themselves, before signing a contract with Columbia Records and releasing the album in August 2000. "Teenage Dirtbag" became the band's first hit, climbing to number seven on the American rock charts while peaking at number two in the U.K. "A Little Respect" also fared well with British audiences, but Brown jeopardized such newfound U.K. success by refusing to lip-sync for a performance on Top of the Pops. In response, the band's label refused to release Wheatus' next record, Hand Over Your Loved Ones, in America. Although a U.K. release did appear in 2003, the label promoted it poorly, and no strong singles appeared. Two years later, the bandmates left the Columbia roster and created their own label to re-release Hand Over Your Loved Ones under a new title: Suck Fony. That same year also saw the release of Wheatus' third album, Too Soon Monsoon." - William Ruhlmann

The Rise Of Science is main support.

"From the cinematic mind of Zachary Boswell, The Rise of Science has created an entire world surrounding calming melodies and light vocals comparable to Circa Survive. Their debut album titled Casey (after the main character of the story), is simply put, a motion picture captured in an audio disc. This isn’t a concept album, but more of a theatrical audio disc. Equipped with a few minutes of phone dialogue scattered throughout the disc, Casey captures listeners with an interesting storyline of a young man and the abrupt changes in his family.

The songs and the story seem separated at first, but as the album continues the lyrics in the songs tie in to what’s said in the phone conversations. It’s an album that bears major weight to someone who is attentively listening while being melodically delightful to those just enjoying the sound of the music. Each track has the ability to stand on its own while still being able to give a part of the story when need be.

Lyrically, the album has multiple levels of meaning. As a track on an album, each song can carry its own meaning like any other song. It’s a special case, however, that all of the tracks are interconnected in accordance to the story they’re trying to portray. So one wouldn’t be lost lyrically if they just chose a random track of the album, but you're rewarded if you listen to the album as a whole.

There are very vivid details of the events that go on between the character and his situation. The listener can always verify what they think is going on in the story with the phone calls at the end of a few tracks on the album. One of the only problems I do have with this record is the phone call dialogues aren’t their own track. They’re hidden at the end of certain songs and that makes for shitty easy listening when vibing to the music and the song ends followed by talking. It’s a real buzz kill.

The songs on this album vary in melodies and tones. They go from calm and melodic like the track “Short Comings Can Be Incomplete” to cynical and eerie like “Teenage Martyr.” They even have a sort of light, “lonely-road-like” ballad titled “Shutters To A Stop” filled with light piano and high, soft vocals finishing off with a loud cry of the chorus at the end. The Rise of Science definitely has a good variety in their music.

The Rise of Science have done a great job with their debut album Casey. The twists and turns the album takes can leave a listener wanting more even after the album finishes and Casey hangs up his end of the receiver for the last time. Luckily, the album art aids in the telling of the story as well as their music video for their first single “Short Comings Can Be Incomplete.” This album is definitely worth a spin for those fans of the wide range of math-like melodies on guitar and high vocals. This theatrical audio release is sure to grab listeners’ way into the new year." --Jose Terrero

Coleman Fox & the Funky Broadways are opening

Coleman Fox & The Funky Broadways hails from a small town south of Atlanta Georgia. Growing up in the roots of Soul and Rock & Roll music helped shape them into the sound machine they are today. The long road that brought them together started in early 2005. Coleman had been in a regionally successful band during his high school days known as Refill. Having found some early success and being a strong songwriter he decided to focus on his own act following the breakup of the band. Coleman Fox, Jon Parrott, and Kyle Jones began playing gospel music together, shortly thereafter, growing up in the Church. As many artists before them, it helped nurture them and formed a tightness amongst the group. Now the search was on for a drummer. Dane Slaughter, during that time had been sharpening his skills on the skins by playing in a local act out of Statesboro, GA while attending Georgia Southern University. Having been childhood friends and growing up playing football together, Coleman and Dane had developed a friendship and a teamwork ethic already together. Following his return to Griffin, GA, Coleman asked if he was interested in joining the group and playing the drums. It was a perfect fit! The group quickly began practicing long and hard hours. It was during this time that they realized how special this group was. Needing some more soul to the group, Coleman began searching for a female vocal to help round out the harmonies. After searching and experimenting Miss Beth Hobbs seemed to fall out of the sky right when she was needed most. Having been trained in singing since she was a child, Beth was a wonderful addition to the group. Lo and behold the Funky Broadway Family was born. Coleman, decided to name them the Funky Broadways, stemming from the widely popular song of the 60's "Funky Broadway" sung by Mr. Wilson Pickett. During this whole time of growth and development Coleman had been working long hours in the studio to finish their first LP. It was a very long process, being the first album he had produced entirely solo, but a very rewarding one. Having finished the album in February of 2010, "Anything Goes", the band was ready for the road. They had been playing one off shows around the local area to perfect their skills as a group in front of an audience. Paying close attention to detail, Coleman felt he and his Funky family were ready for the big time. Now, the process of booking and touring has begun. Still working hard in the practice facilities Coleman Fox & The Funky Broadways are a band with very few comparisons. They have a unique look and sound. They have formed a sound that has been called "lo-fi at its best"; during an interview for Dirty South TV it was coined, "Rock and Soul". So, join the Family and spread the word! Coleman Fox & The Funky Broadways is an engine heading your way full steam. Don't be left out, tell all you know about this new sound coming from the Deep South.
