El Ten Eleven return to the Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, August 13th

PFH Productions presents:

El Ten Eleven at the Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, August 13th, 2011

“Their third record, These Promises Are Being Videotaped, is packed full of danceable melodies that put Ratatat to shame.” Spin

“The double-neck guitar is the ultimate signifier of musical masturbation and phallocentric crotch rocking. That is, unless you’re El Ten Eleven, the post-rock duo from Los Angeles, who lay down simple rhythms, then wield the finished product as mechanized dance jams.” Flaunt

“Once the record stops, you want more, and more, and more.” Filter Magazine

“DFA 1979 and Ratatat are obvious antecedents, but these guys place a great emphasis on layering and manipulating loops on top of a consistently bodyrocking beat.” RCRDLBL.com

"Swirling, angsty post-rock... The Globes are making some sizable waves." - Alternative Press

"...one of the best, and freshest, rock records of 2011.” - Absolute Punk

"The Globes transform complexity into something accessible on this impressive debut. Future Self is smoothly self-assured as it balances on a tightrope... There is abstraction here, but also sheer lyrical gorgeousness." - BLURT

The Sexual Side Effects are performing here on Friday, August 12th

Performer Magazine

The Sexual Side Effects

The Sexual Side Effects are an eclectic and electric alternative rock group drawing from the influences of post-punk and 70's glam rock. Their songs resonate with rich chords, hypnotic vocal melodies, catchy hooks, and ethereal guitars. The group has been boiling over with much fanfare throughout the southeast since their current inception in 2011.

Fronting the band is accomplished multi-instrumentalist Amber Taylor, who shot to regional fame headlining Atlanta’s infamous glam/punk rock Glitterdome, the band Cobweb Strange, and as the organizer of the new Glam Rock theme night "Gilded Trash" in Atlanta and New York City. "Spikey" Mike Sidner (former bassist, Liquid Image) complements this highly charged, heart and pulse-throbbing band. Matt Foster (guitarist, Toy Devils, Blue of Noon) weaves a web of rousing guitar magic, while Clay McClure (drummer, Flat Cat) completes the act on battery.

Flat Cat are performing second and are celebrating the release of their cd "Artbreak Hotel" as well.

Flat Cat is an original rock band based out of Atlanta. With blaring power-pop originals and the occasional unexpected cover tune, it's whatever cat style feels good at the moment.

Flat Cat started as a side project of Atlanta musician Chuck Brittain (guitarist with "The Cogburns" & "The Cherry Bomb" and formerly of "The Sexual Side Effects") as an avenue for his original songs. Since its inception in 2007, the band has mutated to the super talented current line-up with Chuck sharing singing and writing credits with Bucky Motter (Bass), a gender queer performing songwriter and rocker. Bucky is a veteran of the Atlanta music scene with two critically acclaimed CD's and has opened for such artists as BB King, Indigo Girls, and the Manhattan Transfer. Amy "Catfish" Rollinson (from the rollerderby-themed band "Tricksy" and the Joan Jett cover band "The Cherry Bomb") has stepped up her musical chops and now helps front Flat Cat with her amazing scream, crunchy guitar sound, and lyric creativity. Rounding out the talented new line-up is Clay McClure (drummer from "The Sexual Side Effects") who has taken the band from the straight forward 4/4 to a new rhythmic high and a new direction.

Abby Wren & What It Is is starting the show.

"I grew up in a traditional southern town in North Georgia where dreams weren’t socially accepted. Luckily I had a family that encouraged me to impersonate the characters of our town and to sing and speak freely as I desired. My mother and grandmother were responsible for cultivating an environment in which I was able to be creative with my vocal talents. Continuing to be involved in choirs beginning in church and through high school, my passion for singing and vocalizing characters was more than just an idea. There were many nights with my supportive circle of friends where we would put the television on mute so I could narrate with my own voices and my own words.

Nervous yet anxious to get started, I packed my car and moved to a bigger land of opportunity. I moved to Atlanta in June of 2005 and haven’t looked back yet. The move provided more creative people to share ideas with and so many creative outlets that have continued to foster my development. There was nothing left for me in my hometown except memories and tons of inspiration."

Off With Their Heads at the Drunken Unicorn on Wednesday, August 10th, 2011.

Off With Their Heads is a punk rock band from Minneapolis that has included members of bands such as Rivethead, Dillinger Four, Dear Landlord and Banner Pilot. Most of their releases have been splits (with bands that include Blotto, The Measure (SA), Tiltwheel and J Church), 7” singles and EP’s, notably the Hospitals 12” EP in 2006. In 2007 they released the compilation All Things Move Towards Their End which collected songs from their splits as well as compilation contributions from 2003 - 2006, most of it previously only available on vinyl. Their first full-length, From the Bottom, was released on No Idea Records in 2008. In 2010 Epitaph Records released In Desolation and shit is bitchin’.

Dead To Me are performing third.

"Punk revivalists Dead to Me formed in late 2003 in the wake of the dissolution of San Francisco's One Man Army. The band formed around OMA vets Jack Dalrymple (guitar/vocals) and Brandon Pollack (guitar); Western Addiction bassist Chicken (who also worked at Fat Wreck Chords) soon joined on and split vocals with Dalrymple. Boasting a working-class sound similar to OMA that blended late-'70s punk with the sonic grit of a band like Dillinger Four, they eventually recruited Chicken's cousin Ian Anderson for drumming duties, and Dead to Me was complete. Considering its members' musical histories, the band unsurprisingly amassed a notable local following, hooking up for random gigs with bands like the Swingin' Utters, the Briefs, NOFX, and the Adolescents. The guys signed to Fat Wreck in early 2006 and subsequently entered the studio with producer Alex Newport (At the Drive-In, the Locust). Their resulting debut, Cuban Ballerina, appeared that July, boasting socially conscious lyrics that also largely dealt with themes of addiction and recovery (Chicken had recently completed rehab and penned much of the material.)" ~ Corey Apar, All Music Guide

The Riot Before are the second performer of the night.

Southern Lovin’ says: “When I first met The Riot Before, they were a whirlwind of politicized angst and the youthful energy that comes with being a new band on their first tour. It was incredible to watch how quickly they moved and how hard they worked, as my own life seemed so static compared to their constant tours, hurried respites at home, and sporadic jaunts into the studio.

That’s how they have existed for the past two years, a perpetual state of hurling themselves full-force into whatever they’re doing at that moment. When they began working on this album, they told me they were taking a break from touring and slowing things down, and I must admit that I was more than a little apprehensive. From the minute Cory sent me the rough mixes, I was floored by the intensity of the songs and the incredible thought and care that went into carefully crafting these songs with recurring musical and lyrics themes, not to mention the anticipation that builds as one song flows into the next.

‘Fists Buried in Pockets’ is so much more than a collection of songs slapped together on one disc, it’s a complex piece of art that begs the listener to (as they did in the ye olde days of vinyl) sit down, pull out the lyrics, and listen to the record with the undivided attention that it deserves.”

“Fists Buried in Pockets” was released in 2008 on Say-10 Records.

Sonically, it’s sort of in High Place/Zola Jesus territory, spacey dream pop, but much more experimental and ambient. Space Ghost will be the second performer of the evening.

Following a nervous breakdown in the spring of 2010, Grafton Tanner formed Space Ghost with fellow musicians Blake Lewis and Justin Belk, and the three began work on the simultaneously dark and lurid project. Throughout the latter half of 2010 and into 2011, Space Ghost has quickly gained steam in Atlanta, Macon, and their home in rich Athens, GA. Drawing influence from musical heavyweights such as Radiohead, Toro Y Moi, and Gyorgy Ligeti, Space Ghost seeks to combine the moody atmosphere of space rock with the infectious grooves of electro and industrial synthpop. The lyrics are nostalgic; the live shows, frenetic; and the sound, like molting your skin.

But I just noticed they posted up an early version of a song called “Monument”, so I decided it was time to get acquainted with this act and listened to the three tracks they have up on their myspace. JESSE BEAMAN is a one-man band who performs under the name My Empty Phantom. Based in Texas, Beaman's solo live show finds him hopping back and forth between keyboards, drums and guitar, looping the instruments into a melodic post-rock collage.
- WASHINGTON POST EXPRESS

My Empty Phantom reveals emotion in his pieces, with a core classical sound wrapped in comforting ambient touches. The listener can interpret much from the track "Alone", with string tones of sadness, and quiet piano lifting one out of it. Pol-B is performing at the Drunken Unicorn on Thursday, August 4th

Pol-B brings an interesting mix of his New York flow with a touch of southern swagger. With musical influences that include Jay-Z and Raphael Saadiq you feel the strong punch lines of a lyricist beyond his years combined with the musicality of a soul pioneer, elements that are sure to keep each of his songs flowing through your mind with ease.

Pol-B is an artist with a story – not dressed up with delusions of grandeur, but real enough to reach everyone. When he began working on the Clocked Out mix tape, he was working a 9-to-9 job, where devoting time to his music became less and less possible. “I basically took 3 months off of work and went into the studio to focus on nothing but my music. I took a step down in my corporate position to pursue my passion,” said Pol-B. “I called it ‘Clocked Out’ because I essentially clocked out of a job and clocked into my passion. We all have passion we pursue, but we have to work to keep food on the table for our families. I find that balance on a daily basis.”

Lead singer of the renowned group “The Franchize," Nate Davis released his solo album and began touring with Mark Steele/DJ Unorthodox (also of The Franchize), drummer Leon "Quiksticks" Kittrell, string prodigy John Souki (or simply "Souki"), and later added bass phenom Jeremy "The Professor" Taylor, creating “KontraBand Muzik”. Jessi Lynn has shared the stage with The Wreckers, Bomshel, Emerson Drive and The Bodeans and has graced the stage of the highly coveted music festival, Summerfest (over one million in attendance every year, Milwaukee, WI). In 2005, Jessi agreed to be filmed by Emmy award winning producer, Marv Turner (Yellow Dog Productions) for a full length documentary meant to capture the struggles of an artist climbing to the top of the "impossible" music industry mountain (yet to be released). Lynn's music has been on national radio stations, as well as FOX TV, WGN & many local television programs. Most recently, Lynn had her song "A Little Bit Of You" featured in the popular online Soap Opera "Venice, The Series" (a spin off of Guiding Light) and she was also featured on the cover of the magazine, "The Isthmus". Lynn has co-written songs for the NFL, NASCAR, NHRA & MLB (with Jake Johnson) that you will soon be hearing at select games/races (Banshee Music Publishing).

Neil Cribbs will be performing first.

Neil Cribbs began playing music at the age of five. He explored instruments such as violin, piano, trombone, and drums. Early in his life he primarily was influenced by symphonic music and groups from the 60s such as Cat Stevens, the Beatles, and James Taylor. At the age of sixteen he found his mother's guitar stashed away in the attic and decided to learn the ins and outs of the six strings hovering high above the fretboard. Immediately he began writing music of his own. As time progressed so did his influences. He began exploring the world of Alternative Country. Bands such as Whiskytown, Uncle Tupelo, Ryan Adams, Wilco, Sonvolt, Richard Buckner and the Old 97s paralleled with Joni Mitchell, Ani DiFranco, Beth Hart, John Prine, and Taj Mahal. After recording a small album entitled "35 Sound Start" in 2006 the press, almost immediately, sold out. Neil has just released a new album entitled "Marionette" that became available December of 2009. Since it's release Neil has been writing non-stop and playing gigs in the eastern United States.

Friday, July 29th is Noel Stephen and The Darlings here at the Drunken Unicorn

PFH Productions presents:

Noel Stephen & The Darlings at the Drunken Unicorn on Friday, July 29th, 2011

"Young Atlanta group Noel Stephen & the Darlings crafts the kind of un-ironic rococo pop that winks at its musical forefathers (Serge Gainsbourg, Rufus Wainwright) while concurrently, and proudly, declaring its independence. The band's first album, Ten Years Too Late, has a very appropriate first-album feel. The production is inconsistent, vocalists trade off from song to song, and the band has a stylistic tendency to veer rather wildly back and forth from barroom country to the baroque and beyond. But there's a sweetness to the Darlings' blue-eyed approach, an honesty that's missing from most new music, that saves Ten Years Too Late from itself. Likewise, certain unanticipated moments — the dramatic downshift halfway through "Your Scarf," for instance — flirt with profundity. The Darlings' best moments are certainly ahead of them, but this altogether solid debut should prove a fine jumping-off point." - Gabe Vodicka / Creative Loafing Atlanta

Country Mice will be the second performer of the evening.

Country Mice front man Jason Rueger grew up on a farm in rural Kansas passed down through three generations of his family. With headphones on, he walked the path, bruised his hands and squinted his eyes in the sun, but music, above all else, made him whole. Looking out from his window, he set his sights for something different than the dirt and milo that stung his eyes and cut his hands. Jason fought against the gravity-pull of hometown and, with all the joy and pain of letting go, moved to Brooklyn. Here, he met Ben Bullington (guitar), Kurt Kuehn (drums) and Mike Feldman (bass), who, being from Kansas, Wisconsin and upstate New York, also shared a comfort in displacement and they quickly banded with Rueger. As Country Mice, they rallied together to craft apocalyptic ballads through amplifier hazes that thicken into funnel clouds, drums that stomp-clap sedately before the storm peaks, and bass tones that thicken the bloodstream. Jason draws on his small town rearing with sophistication beyond the ordinarily romantic and reductive Americana troubadour, and his songwriting is anything but dime a dozen. You can hear strong traces of Neil Young and Wilco mixed into their modern experimental guitar sounds that any fan of mid-90’s Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. would love. Together they cut their teeth among the other hardworking bands of Brooklyn's fast-paced scene. To date, the band has released two formative 7" singles and a limited edition cassette on Brooklyn-based indie labels and now they are ready to unleash their debut album,"Twister," on Wao Wao Records. This is a record that sonically chisels through the calloused shell of glossy rock & roll to find the dissonant live wire beneath and play it for all its worth. It tells a tale of strained memory: the hardships, joys, and love of growing up in a small town in the Midwest, with the hopes and dreams of traveling the world – a record for every kid seeing the big world from his small bedroom window. Wao Wao Records (www.myspace.com/waowaorecords) is run by Toby Rascal and Hbear, two members of Kanine Records (www.kaninerecords.com), out of the basement of the Kanine Records headquarters, normally referred to as the Doghouse. Toby and Hbear formed Wao Wao Records to start releasing records by Country Mice the day they heard a lo-fi mp3 off of a 4-track demo that Jason, Ben and Kurt did in their practice space. They instantly knew then and there, that these three had something special and they wanted to be a part of it. “I instantly fell in love with their scratchy guitar sounds. It reminded of the joys of digging up a lost bone on a warm spring day. While their guitars feed back off of his homemade amp, Jason gives off a classically lost vocal style that gives way to a whole new take on a long lost 90’s indie sound.

"Jeff and Jake Turner, guitarists for kid-friendly pop punks Say Anything, have taken a decidedly more creative turn with their rekindled side-project, XO. Largely the product of brother Jeff's, "Helll," the first new demo to appear on their Bandcamp page, is a headlong trip into a morphine haze of post-punk dreariness and slurred guitar sounds. It's all set to a visual onslaught of videos, shadow and smoke that has inspired comparisons to Joy Division, Sigur R ós and My Bloody Valentine." — Chad Radford / Creative Loafing Music

Small Reactions are performing second.

Small Reactions play nerve pop. Their music has tinges of new wave and post punk; it’s often angular, sometimes surfy, and generally quick.

They've played somewhere in the vicinity of 120 shows. With an average of 45 minutes on stage per show, they have amassed roughly 5, 355 minutes of playing music to an audience. This bio has to be updated with a calculator.

Shows are more akin to movements than a simple collection of songs. Songs, in turn, maintain a sense of careful spontaneity. Small Reactions strive for perpetual motion. Some say it isn’t possible, but it is. Their concerts do, however, wrap up in a timely and orderly fashion.

They live in East Atlanta Village in an old stone house (Rock Bottom) with their cats Toby and Walter. The house was built in 1940 and has a bomb shelter which was added in the 1950s.

The Dirty Boy Social Club presents Dirty Hollywood V.3 on Thursday, July 21st

The Dirty Boy Social Club and presents Dirty Hollywood V.3:

The Doll Daze at the Drunken Unicorn on Thursday, July 21st, 2011

Doll has never been one to follow the trends. It has always been about just “being”. She says candidly “Who has a choice in the way God creates you”. Some people do music because it is something that they love but they have no passion behind it. DoLL clearly has the passion of her ancestors and even more an outer-world like spirit behind what she conveys musically. Her shows have been known to create a church like environment. With some of the audience in awe and the others in uproar because of the sheer intensity. Come to a show and you be the judge.

Her release of the EP entitled “Acid Report: the missing peace” has slowly made its way to the ears of audiences in Atl and beyond. One of the fan favorites “Let it Blow” has a tinge of Latin influence and the tempo changes throw you into a place that catches you off guard at first but then makes you smile after you follow it. The six songs on her EP channel subjects that make you wanna get up and go for your dreams like in “2040″ or even scream and thrust your head back and forth like in “the Hard Way”. Her goal was to introduce a portion of her sound to audiences so they get a small taste of what lies ahead for the dazed one.

theDOLLDAZE’s newest musical endeavor is a romantic tale entitled “Mystic Novel” a short film/novel concept album. She can’t say to much about it besides it’s a sort of period based semi-psychotic love story. The artwork and song snippets for the first passage will be released late summer 2011. She assures you will not be disappointed.

"Sometimes true friendships are put to sever tests. Sure, it’s easy to be friendly with other people while life is good, when relationships are working and the job is going well. But what do you do when you’re doing great, yet your good friend is down in the dumps? Do you turn away and find new friends that aren’t complaining all the time? Or do you tell your friend to simply get it together — fast? Or lastly, do you bite the bullet, put your gut feelings aside and become that shoulder to cry on? If you chose the latter, through think and thin friendship approach, Lee Maddox Grocery is an album you will warm up to much faster than most.

Lee Maddox Grocery is the sound of a man falling apart. It’s all about that guy at the side of the bar crying in his beer, only to come up for air now and again to moan the blues, then sink band down into the suds. “Alone” begins with an acoustically strummed guitar, before the painful vocal comes in. “And I know that I’m alone now,” it begins, before continuing, “And I see now, it’s what she wanted for me.” This song is sung in a voice that sounds a little like Nick Cave’s, only instead of telling murder ballad stories, The Acorns express self-pity. Then on “Wasted” we hear: “Well, I’m half way to being totally fuckin’ wasted.” And maybe there is a chicken or the egg principle at play in this instance: Did he lose his woman because he was wasted all the time? Or did he start getting “totally f***in’ wasted” because his girl left him? It’s hard to be sure exactly what order this set of circumstances followed. But it is obvious that The Acorns’ singer is both woebegone and “totally f***in’ wasted” most of the time during this album.

The listener is left with the feeling that Lee Maddox Grocery is an intentionally loose recording. For instance, we hear almost every song counted off before it actually begins. These are by no means studio pros. It also sounds as though these are complete-take recordings, and not pieced together. If there is any true overdubbing on the disc after all, it’d be a big surprise to these ears. The Acorns presumably didn’t want to put out a slick package of studio product. Rather, the intent was to capture raw emotion – as raw as possible – and put it out there for an audience to behold.

Nearly every track on this album is an acoustic, folk-ish recording. The quirky, late Vic Chestnutt comes to mind many times when warbling vocals come wiggling through the mix. One titled “Go My Own Way” stands out distinctly from all the rest, however, because it’s a loud, electric guitar rock & roll song. Johnny Cash once sang, “Get rhythm, when you get the blues.” And that’s great advice! It’s particularly fine advice for The Acorns because by slowly wallowing in problems, only makes them persist for a longer period of time — like a self-pool of stagnant water.

So, do these Acorns seem like folks you can befriend? Are you patient and kind, with a keen listening ear? If you answered yes, Lee Maddox Grocery will find a place on your shopping list and in your heart. Yet if you’re always impatient and in a hurry and will not eat anywhere that doesn’t have a drive-thru, it’s highly recommended you pass this recorded musical establishment by." Eller are the first performer.

AOK - THE ALBUM. is a concept record based on life experiences and how I've been through all these struggles and yet still i have turned out "AOK." All involve some struggle or challenge and how i dealt with them. sort of a public journal... if you will. we are all soldiers. fighting some type of battle. the whole end purpose is to help someone out there. to show people that you can rise above. no matter what you have to struggle with. Hope you enjoy.
