Ben Kronberg will be performing on Thursday, April 14th

Tigerwink presents:

Ben Kronberg on Thursday, April 14th, 2011 at the Drunken Unicorn.

"As a young boy, Ben Kronberg recalls staying up at night to watch “An Evening At the Improv” on A&E.

“I was always interested in comedy and more than just what I thought was funny,” he said.

As he grew older, when he was a second semester senior at the University of Colorado-Boulder, his mother bought him a guitar to further express his creativity. As he began to teach himself about the working of the guitar he realized he wasn’t very good at it.

“I decided to write silly, funny songs so as to compensate for my lack of talent,” he said.

After some of his friends heard some of the songs, they urged him to perform at open mic nights around the university. From there, he began to perform at comedy clubs around Denver where he was recognized by various people in the industry.

As his career began to develop, he was given a proposition in 2007. He was asked to perform the largest number of dog weddings to unofficially break the Guinness world record. He married 178 dog couples, shattering the previous record of 27.

Currently residing in New York, Kronberg came up with a unique business idea.

“In New York, there are delivery services for everything, so I decided to try it out,” he said.

He started the business Jokes on Spokes, in which for $10 to $15 per person he will provide refreshments and ride his bicycle to your gathering and do a show for you and your friends. He has had only one gig so far. It was a bachelorette/going-away party.

When Kronberg performs, his style and delivery are tailored to the audience and venue.

“With smaller venues, I usually like to be a little louder and sillier than at larger venues,” he said

His style of comedy — which he picked up from Steven Wright — consists of deadpan, one-liner delivery of jokes.

He has been compared to Mitch Hedberg, whose long hair and similar deadpan delivery style gave off a stoner-esque vibe. To finish his style, mix in a little music provided by self-accompaniment on guitar. He writes everything down, whether it be an idea for a joke or something he just found funny, claiming sitting down to just write a joke seems manufactured and forced.

Kronberg said he cannot imagine doing anything else at this point in his life.

“When something becomes your life, you begin to realize the different paths that are open to you and cool ideas come to you,” he said." - Cole Komma / Ames 247

Shalewa Sharpe will also be performing.

"Shalewa Sharpe brings a much-needed perspective to Atlanta's comedy scene. The Laughing Skull Lounge's resident comic for the month of February, her stage presence suggests she's an old soul with a young spirit, and her material hints at a brilliant mind still susceptible to pop-culture infiltration. With a comedic style and fashion sense all her own, Sharpe should continue to turn heads, on and off stage.

"Pink Pompeii will be releasing a new album in 2011 called De Rigeuer. The band includes members that were once in The Holland Dutch and an acoustic act called Da Dum. There are two major reasons I love Pink Pompeii; dance and cello. Listen to “Dark Cloud” to understand what I mean. The electronic dance groove is amplified by a cello gone mad! The band’s sound could easily be likened to Blondie, infused with Beethoven (both of which are cited as musical influences)." - The Moon And Pluto

Jukebox The Ghost will be here on Tuesday, April 12th

Ok Productions presents:

Jukebox the Ghost on Tuesday, April 12th, 2011.

The appeal of a modern, on the rise indie band like Jukebox the Ghost is simple: They write catchy songs. On top of that, they’re dynamic, skilled musicians. The band’s records are carefully structured, yet wildly diverse affairs. And the live show? Energetic, crowd-pleasing, cathartic.

Originally formed during college in Washington D.C., Jukebox the Ghost (the name’s an amalgam of Captain Beefheart and Nabakov references) won accolades for that first record, Let Live and Let Ghosts, which Spin called “a refreshing reminder that the lighthearted electricity of a fantastic pop song is still filled with live wires.” The band – Thornewill, Siegel and drummer Jesse Kristin – jelled quickly, despite their disparate musical backgrounds in everything from classical piano to prog to indie to 80s Brit-pop. Collectively, the group delivered an unabashedly upbeat, playful sound with a sly dark streak (see: the aforementioned apocalyptic lyrics).

JTG’s pop sensibility is still on display on the new record, but now rounded out with more emotional heft and an expanded musical palate. For starters, there’s an emergence of synths, most notably on the Phoenix-like opener “Schizophrenia.” (Says Thornewill: “I was such a classical pianist for a long time that I was sort of against using them…and then I started fooling around and realized how much they could open up our sound.”). Elsewhere, the album veers through gorgeous AM radio throwbacks (“The Summer Sun”), Beatles-esque twists and turns (“Mistletoe”) and even a little prog-rock in “The Sun,” “The Sun (Interlude)” and “The Stars,” a three-part “philosophical/cosmological pondering” by Siegel that’s actually quite…dance-able.

Capillary Action is the main support act.

"We used to call what he does math rock, but that’s not quite adequate to cover all the weird jazz elements the latest lineup of the band brings in, or the way he and the band tease listeners with bits of surprisingly poppy melody before yanking out the rug." - Joe Tangari / Pitchfork Media

Radio The Captain are the first performer.

“Rock” and “Indie” are two of the most ambiguous terms in music classification; however, until you take a listen to Radio the Captain’s music or check out one of their shows to draw your own conclusions, then “Rock” and “Indie” will have to do. Radio the Captain has been writing music since the summer of 2010. Comprised of former members of the heavy rock band After the Fray, guitarist Logan Boyd and bassist/vocalist Dustin Taylor sought a new musical direction, one that still incorporated raw emotion and energy yet instead of double bass blasts and heavy breakdowns they wanted more guitar delays and melodic driven bass riffs. The halls of Georgia State University provided the two with a drummer as Logan found Jeff Hawkins via a flyer Jeff had posted about his desire to connect with other musicians. Completing the lineup with drums and bringing his lyrical ideas to the table, Radio the Captain had the material and pieces they needed to get started.

From Atlanta, Radio the Captain does not seek to fit any “mold” except those which are self-imposed. While outside influences are perpetually pouring in, the band is not interested in changing its image or style simply to impress others. With most of the latter half of 2010 spent writing and constructing songs, 2011 looks to be a year of playing shows and expanding their fan base. Knowing the vast amounts of great music out there and the busy schedules of its peers, Radio the Captain is grateful to everyone who takes the time to check out their music or attend a show. They cannot promise that you will love their music, but Logan, Dustin and Jeff can guarantee that by taking time to give their band a chance, you mean a lot to them.

Bunnybrains is headlining WREKtacular

"Inscrutable" isn't an inscrutable enough word to describe Bunnybrains' legacy of noise, anti-rock, and found sounds built over the past two decades. The band was once rumored to be so prolific in their avant-garde ramblings that they made a new cassette every week, recorded during rehearsal. Live, the group's audio quirks become visual, as frontcreep Dan Seward writhes about the stage doing things to his guitar that might not be legal in some states. Atomic Tom are headlining on Friday, April 8th.

Sweetwood Presents:

Atomic Tom on Friday, April 8th, 2011.

The story of Atomic Tom begins in Brooklyn. The record that is The Moment was recorded over four months in a tiny apartment with the band's close friend, Ben Romans as producer. Microphones were set up in the hallway, the bathtub and the kitchen; amps and empty guitar cases lined the walls, and the vocal booth was a repurposed utility closet. Despite noise complaints, one of them leading to a shutdown by “New York’s finest”, the LP left the studio dressed in larger-than-life sounds.

Lead vocalist Luke White began writing demos in 2006 with Philip Galitzine on bass, adding guitarist Eric Espiritu in 2007. By early 2009, drummer Tobias Smith completed the circle. "We knew we had the green light," says Luke.

After countless New York area shows, ATOMIC TOM started to hear their lyrics shouted back at them at shows, "We knew the time was right for a full-length record."

From the exhilarating electronica-meets-arena-rock shuffle of “Let Let Go”, the epic romanticism of "We Were Never Meant To Be", and the hauntingly delicate "Play That Dirty Girl", ATOMIC TOM’S debut LP demonstrates remarkable musical ability and diversity, married with an innate sense of how to connect with an audience on a grand scale. "It’s possible to reach each and every individual in an eighty thousand seat stadium," claims Philip. "You can make an enormous, towering sound and still say something deeply meaningful and musical.” They plan to do just that.

Nowhere is this philosophy more evident than on the title track. Says Eric, "whenever we play 'The Moment,' it feels like we somehow all stand up a little straighter. There’s something fresh about that particular tune, and yet it also connects to the music we loved growing up. There’s a lot of magic on that song.” Adds Philip, “'The Moment' took three entire days of pre-production, just kind of summoning the sounds we heard in our heads.”

The band's first single, “Take Me Out”, neatly summarizes the theme of the record: “It’s a vulnerable song. It’s about letting people into your life, letting people rescue you,” explains Luke. “Admitting that you need that, and then asking for it…that’s a very difficult task, though it’s something everyone goes through at some point.

The Six Shot Revival are the openers.

It's been said, "It's easier to give birth than to raise the dead..."

In a world driven by the need to mass produce by way of cookie-cutter molds, the team of THE SIX SHOT REVIVAL have found it deep in their creative processes to deny the urge to mimic their surroundings through a successful attempt to prove, as in the days of old, that SOUL triumphs over polished, over-produced, systematically formulated insta-pop every time.

Inspired by bands that earned acclaim by way of their overwhelmingly infectious ability to move audiences young and old for the better part of fifty years, THE SIX SHOT REVIVAL has thoroughly shattered the notion that the best of the "rock-n-roll" genre has come and gone. Through the use of the same tools and tactics that brought songs to the listening public such as "My Generation," which gave a voice to the teenage angst of the sixties, to "War Pigs" and "Ace of Spades," which continue to define metal as we know it today, SSR has forced every person in their wake to reconcile with the reality that not only is rock-n-roll alive and well today, but is poised to once again excite a generation to the revolutions that it once did for generations previously.

Teaming with the visionary engineers at the acclaimed Atlanta recording house, Southern Tracks Studios, Tom Tapley Seven Morrison, THE SIX SHOT REVIVAL's first e.p. is taking a jaded and cynical listening public by storm. Tune into this band's rise and join the one true rock REVIVAL.........

AxCx have rescheduled for Monday, April 4th, 2011

Anal Cunt are headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Monday, April 4th, 2011. This is their rescheduled performance for their cancelled show in June 2010.

"I started anal cunt in march 1988. when the band started, it wasn't meant to be a big deal at all. all i had planned was to do 1 demo tape, and play one show, but when it ended up being more than that.at the time i was playing bass in a band called executioner(that i quit by the end of march),who had 2 records out(i played on the 2nd one) and toured around the u.s.a.,plus i also played guitar and sang in a death metal parody band called satan's warriors.but also, i used to have a hobby of making up joke bands all the time. most of them sounded like anal cunt already, but didn't do more than make a shitty demo in my,or a friends bedroom/basement/or attic. the oldest band i can remember that was similar to a.c. was in 1980 in my attic with my cousin michael. it was called "the losers",then later changed to the name"noise". that "band" was me with a toy guitar(i couldn't afford a real one for years)and vocals and him playing cardboard boxes as fast as possible. eventually i got a real guitar, and made more tapes. the name anal cunt came from when i used to make a list of words that were offensive and then make combinations from them to get the most offensive, stupid, dumb, etc name possible. one day i came up with anal cunt. like i said, i used to make up tons of bands that already sounded like anal cunt, but they were usually with the same people. i wanted to do it with different people this time. i wanted the band to be the least musical thing possible. no lyrics,no music written for the songs, no song titles, NOTHING resembeling music at all.i also wanted the band's one show to have a very lively, aggressive, and violent stage presence. i usually played guitar (and sang on some) in these bands, but in this one i just wanted to do vocals."

Strong Intention is performing second.

Formed in 1993, STRONG INTENTION continues to deliver brutal hardcore fueled by extreme speed, heaviness, and disgust. The band's earliest incarnation found itself heavily Influenced by classic NYHC outfits such as AGNOSTIC FRONT, BREAKDOWN, and the CRO-MAGS, and released the What's At Stake demo in 1993. These early recordings aligned the band with ultra-tough heavy hardcore represented in Maryland by NEXT STEP UP and GUT INSTINCT. But by 1995, issues of focus took their toll on the lineup, leaving then-guitarist Zac as the only original member, and putting the band into a year-long hiatus. In 1996, the band re-formed around a new core lineup, and the new members brought a new, diverse range of ideas and influences to the band. Gradually writing faster and faster material, the band released a debut 7" EP in 1996 on Crucial Blast. This EP was a minor departure from the earlier heavy NYHC hardcore the band had been known for; as the newer material was much faster and moved Zac over to lead vocals. After the EP was released, STRONG INTENTION continued to go through a myriad of lineup changes throughout the 90's; yet managed to tour the US and Canada 5 times.

Through all of this, the band's sound has continued to shift more and more towards the harshest ends of the underground extreme hardcore / metal spectrum, as well as cultivate a thoroughly apocalyptic worldview.

Wolves & Jackals are the opener.

Wolves & Jackals is a destructive, unrelenting force preparing for the apocalypse that will consume us all. Patrons of God's left hand, they incite the legacy of pain and suffering onto mere mortals. Words spoken through them. The gospel of death.

Coming out of Atlanta, GA, Wolves & Jackals fuse together styles from thrash (Slayer, At the Gates), black metal (Behemoth, 1349), death metal (Suffocation, Carcass), and hardcore (Burnt by the Sun, Converge) to construct a driving force of speed and vigorous brutality. LaMar George unleashes pain and torment with his screams and terror through his guitar. Troy Bedingfield lets forth Hell Fire through his solos. Michael Green storms on the drum kit, shattering nerves with every strike. Mikhail Loginov shakes the bowels of hell with his bass. Together, they trigger the bloodthirsty onslaught on humanity that is Wolves and Jackals.

Morning Teleportation are performing here on April 1st.

Tight Bros presents:

Morning Teleportation at the Drunken Unicorn on Friday, April 1st, 2011

Morning Teleportation formed in 2005 when Bowling Green, KY natives and lifelong friends Travis Goodwin (keyboards), Tres Coker (drums), and Paul Wilkerson (bass) met up with Chicago transplant Tiger Merritt (vocals/guitar), who had just moved to their hometown for college. From the beginning the band has built up a roller coaster of tumultuous rock 'n roll, featuring analog synths, heartfelt vocals, and sudden changes woven through psychedelia, electronica, and deep-space pickin' n' grinnin'. They've spent most of the past year on the road playing for enthusiastic crowds at Bonnaroo and Sasquatch and supporting the likes of The Flaming Lips, Cage The Elephant, and Modest Mouse.

To witness Morning Teleportation's live show is to experience a cacophony of improvisational mayhem draped with melodic twists and turns. Merritt's vocals dart sharply about the frantic, pulsing backbeat held down by the rhythm section, while his spacey fingerstyle guitar prowess embodies a style best described as "finger-trippin." And while their sound may be somewhat more modern than several of their cited heroes (including James Gang and CSNY), you should make no mistake: these are still some boys who want nothing more than to have a good time in the classic rock idiom.

With the combined energy of a basement party, a back-room jam session, and a futuristic hootenanny, Morning Teleportation's raucous, off-kilter explosion of enthusiasm is guaranteed to raise a smile. The band's first album, entitled Expanding Anyway, is out now on Glacial Pace Recordings.

Free Moral Agents are headlining on Saturday, March 26th

Speakeasy and Treefingers present:

Free Moral Agents at the Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, March 26th, 2011

Free Moral Agents is the brainchild of Isaiah Ikey Owens, Grammy Award-winning keyboardist for The Mars Volta & De Facto.

The Long Beach, CA-based Owens initially started Free Moral Agents as a solo project. It has since expanded into a group effort, a result of Isaiah's decade-long career of collaborations with artists as diverse as El-P, Mastodon, Sublime, Saul Williams, and Z-Trip.

Free Moral Agents released their debut Everybody's Favorite Weapon on GSL Records in late 2004. With freestyle moments layered over vibrant melodies, heavy beats, and jazzy interludes, Everybody's Favorite Weapon was just the beginning of something that was no longer considered just a side-project.

While out on the road with the Mars Volta, Isaiah kept thinking of ways to expand Free Moral Agents. In 2006, FMA went from a solo effort to full six-member group and started improvising new material. With the lineup of Mendee Ichikawa (vocals), Reid Kinnet (Rhodes), Jesse Carzello (guitar), Dennis Owens (bass), Ryan Reiff (drums) and Isaiah jumping from keyboard to keyboard, FMA quickly came up with much new music and was in and out of the studio several times in 2007 and 2008.

Free Moral Agents is now gearing up to release their new album Honey In The Carcass Of The Lion, an EP titled Control This and a 10" vinyl collaboration with legendary Fela Kuti's drummer and Afro Beat co-founder Tony Allen titled North Is Red.

ODIST are performing second.

Comprising three skilled musicians, (Jason Craig, (bass and samples), Sarah Wilson, (drums), and Parker Newell (guitar)) determined to make its mark on the Prog rock scene, Odist has been a growing force to be reckoned with. They performed their first show together and blew the audience away eliciting rave reviews noting their "flawless transitions" and "banging breaks" which has come to be a signature mark of theirs over the years. Following their first performance, they began an aggressive tour schedule bringing their sounds to the east and west coast, breaking records for most views on dirtysouth.tv along the way. A couple of years later, word of mouth landed them an inspiring show with Free Moral Agents(which features Grammy award winning keyboardist Ikey Owens of The Mars Volta) and they blew him away. Soon after, Owens offered to produce their 2nd album, and invited them on tour for the spring of 2011. Odist is sure to wow audiences and take them on their journey of experimentation of the Prog rock sound and beyond.

Jungol are the openers tonight.

Jungol, comprised of two brothers and one long-time friend, has created a sound that is a clear standout in the realm of experimental rock. Sometimes moody and ethereal, sometimes loud and complex, Jungol's music stretches across a landscape of emotions, while simultaneously focusing on well-crafted songs that feature engaging vocals.

“Much of the respect for Jungol by the Atlanta music community comes from the sheer originality of their songwriting, as well as their impressive technically skilled experimental style.” Performer Magazine 2010

Founding members Josh and Graham Yoder have inhabited Atlanta's rock scene with various ensembles since their high school years. Multi-instrumentalist, Zack Varner, joined the group from 2005 to 2009. Drummer Jason Monseur, the formidable force behind Jungol's expansive beats, joined the brothers in 2003 and together, they have spread Jungol's unique brand of rock across the U.S. They've toured the southeast multiples times since forming as a group, and have since expanded nationally with tours up the east coast as well as out west.

In the spring of 2007, Jungol released their first full-length album Tiny Heaven, of which Music-Reviewer.com stated "...it is this experimentation that characterizes Jungol's attempt to create a sound that pushes the envelope. You can never predict what the next song will sound like because they all contain different structures, sounds, instruments, harmonies..."

After their debut LP received glowing reviews, the band released Places, a 6 song EP unveiled in February 2009, which showcased Jungol's renewed vision of more concise songs with prominent vocals. Places also demonstrated their passion for creating new sounds through the use of samplers, synths, glockenspiel, field recordings and string arrangements. Local blog Ohm Park listed Places as one of the top 10 Atlanta albums released in 2009.

Jungol hasn't merely captured the attention of critics - on April 30, the band performed before to a sold-out crowd at the Earl for the release of their latest full-length album, Over the Sun and Under the Radar. The album marks Jungol’s first effort as a 3-piece and has been lauded by fans and critics alike. The use of unconventional synth sounds and strong vocal melodies drive the songs on OTSAUTR, but at its core, rock still lives. Jungol followed up the release with a tour up the eastern seaboard before heading back to Atlanta to begin work on new material.

Superhumanoids are headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Friday, March 25th, 2011.

superhumanoids create dreamy pop that shouts summery '60s harmonies, garage rock's raw tonality, slick new-wave electronics, and the adventurous dissonance of '90s indie rock. LA-based, the foursome is equally focused on propulsive live performances and glimmery productions for private listening.

Spectralux are performing second.

Spectralux takes a fresh, stylish approach to rock music with atmospheric textures and futuristic imagery. Influenced by David Bowie, Pixies and Wire, Spectralux took the stage just before the turn of the century with a handful of songs and homemade props from malfunctioning television sets to dismembered mannequins.

The Acorns are the opener.

"The Acorns opened the night with Ross Taylor on a minimal drum kit and Sghetti Head on vocals and acoustic guitar. Sghetti started the Acorns’ set with “Totally Fucking Wasted” because, in his words, “Well, I’m pretty wasted, so I thought it was appropriate…” Then, after several oddly light-hearted songs on heavy subjects, Sghetti jumped off the stage for a raucous sing-along with a couple of dedicated fans who knew his lyrics better than he knew them himself." - Performer Magazine review of the Acorns live at the Drunken Unicorn in December 2010.

Wednesday March 23rd is Starfucker

Tight Bros and The Drunken Unicorn presents:

Starfucker

STARFUCKER or STRFKR (if you prefer). started in 2006 in Portland, Oregon, United States.
Made up of multi-instrumentalists Joshua Hodges, Ryan Biornstad, Shawn Glassford, and Keil Corcoran.

Starting as a solo project for Joshua Hodges, Starfucker quickly became a three piece with the addition of former Sexton Blake bandmate Ryan Biornstad, and new friend Shawn Glassford.
As a three piece released their Self Titled debut album on Badman Recording Co. in September of 2008, followed by their first tour of the USA. Including performances at CMJ and MFNW.

In January they brought aboard Keil Corcoran, and shortly after released Jupiter in May of 2009, which the band considers to be an EP, or the dancing little sister to the debut.
Followed by extensive touring throughout all of 2009. Including performances at SXSW, Capital Hill Block Party, and Monolith.

In late 2009 the band suffered a brief identity crisis and released “Medicine” as a 7” single in UK/Europe under the name Pyramiddd.
Which included a short tour of UK/Europe, in November of 2009.

Coming back to their senses in 2010, by keeping the name STARFUCKER and also embracing the shortened STRFKR as a family friendly option. The band road tested new material with a tour of the West Coast in Spring of 2010. And in August announced signing to Polyvinyl Record Co. by releasing the “Julius” 7” single. Followed by a Fall tour of the USA.

Second Full Length “Reptilians” is out 3/8/11 on Polyvinyl. Which will be followed by an appearance at SXSW and extensive touring once again throughout most of 2011.

Casiokids are performing second.

Old analogue, trashy keyboards and pop melodies make up the Norwegian electro-troupe that is Casiokids. With tunes often sung in their native language and influenced by afro-beat, techno and out-and-out pop, the band draws similarities and takes inspiration from Paul Simon's "Graceland", Ivor Cutler, New Order, King Tubby, Bob Hund, Cornelius and Fela Kuti.

October 27 2008 saw the historic release of the first ever Norwegian language pop single in the UK. Refusing to accept the notion of b-sides, Casiokids released the Double A sided single Grønt lys i alle ledd/Togens hule on Moshi Moshi Records. The band became the latest in a select band of artists to have released through Moshi’s Singles Club including names such as Late of the Pier, Lykke Li, Florence and The Machine and Kate Nash. The success of the first single will now be followed up by the second in a series of 7”s the band plan to release in 2009. Verdens største land/Fot i hose will be released on Moshi Moshi on March 2nd 2009 and will be accompanied by intense touring activity including a European tour as support for Of Montreal in January, a headlining UK tour in March and confirmed appearances at Eurosonic and South By South West to mention just a few of the highlights. Third single on Moshi Moshi Finn bikkjen!/Gomurmamma was released august 3rd 2009.

Since their creation in 2005, Casiokids have experienced everything from playing for hundreds of Norwegian youngsters on a 12-date kindergarten tour in Norway to promote their first album, to playing for more or less grown up indie and electro kids all over Europe. They have also made a name for themselves as providers of sound installations and workshops, as well as DJs and have played numerous renowned festivals and venues in Europe and North America including Roskilde Festival (Denmark, 2008), CMJ Music Marathon (New York City, 2008) The Great Escape Festival (Brighton, UK 2008) City Showcase Festival (London, 2008), Luminaire (London, 2008) Sous La Plage Festival (Paris, 2007), La Fleche d'Or (Paris, 2007), Øya Festival (Norway 2006 & 2008), Ekko Festival (Bergen, Norway 2005), NuMusic Festival (Stavanger, Norway 2005 w/ Jamie Lidell, K.Stockhausen, Datarock, Carl Craig++), Les Nuits Secrètes (Aulnoye-Aymeries, France 2008) Elektroni(k) Festival (Rennes, France 2005), La Lune Des Pirates (Amiens, France 2005), La Guinguette Pirate (Paris, 2005), Paradiso (Amsterdam, 2008), Debaser Medis (Stockholm, 2008) and Scandinavia’s biggest and best showcase festival by:Larm (Stavanger 2005 & Oslo 2008) to name just a few.

"I always say, if you want some enormously danceable, minimalist Afro-funk and space-disco (with a donk on it), then you need to reach out to beardy Norwegians, for it is only they who are capable of making records as brilliantly lunatic as this. For a start, it's entirely instrumental; for another start, it is propelled along its golden path by the single greatest synth noise in the history of electricity and wires; and, for a third start, it's all over in less than three minutes. Everything lovable about popular music is here and it has a video to accompany it that is both mentally compelling and sort of hilarious. Casiokids: you rule in all sorts of wonderful new ways."

Sonen are the openers.

SONEN is an indie-electro-dance-rock band hailing from Atlanta, GA and is comprised of Keith Evans (vocals, bass, guitar, synth), Holly Mullinax (vocals, synth, perscussion), and Josh Guss (guitar, synth, laptop ninja). Their dark and powerful melodies, harmonic vocals, and hypnotic beats combine to push the sonic limits of indie rock while maintaining a solid electronic edge. The group was described by Frequency Magazine as "self serious but danceable, polished but organic, SONEN’s sound is made up of all the right choices; Joy Division-esque post punk borrowed previously by Interpol mixes with something like the electro-pop bliss of The Postal Service to give the band a sonic identity all its own." SONEN’s live shows are dynamic events, complete with a light show, an ecstatic dance floor, and the occasional pack of dancing robots.

SONEN also plays host to LaserBeam Kitty, an INDIE-ELECTRO-DANCE-ROCK-ART PARTY AT THE HIGHLAND BALLROOM THE LAST FRIDAY OF EACH MONTH. The monthly party, which has been heralded as a feast for the senses, has taken the city by storm and was conceptualized by the band in an effort to bring the growing indie electro movement to the forefront of the Atlanta music scene.

Trash Talk and Off! are performing at the Drunken Unicorn on Tuesday, March 22nd

Tight Bros and Ok Productions presents:

Trash Talk are headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

Formed in the fall of 2005, Trash Talk hit the ground running. 3 years of relentless touring, 5 releases and 4 vans later, they are still running at the same frantic pace that has established them as one of the hardest working bands today. With live performances deeply rooted in chaos and a track record to match, Trash Talk is a band to be seen as well as heard. Nomadic, outcast and poised to release their 6th chaotic outburst, and first LP, Trash Talk is hungry for more. Trash Talk is coming to your city soon. Bear witness...

Off! are performing before Trash Talk.

"From the ashes of a really screwed situation!"

OFF!, the LA-based punk/hardcore quartet formed in 2009 by Keith Morris (Black Flag/Circle Jerks), Dimitri Coats (Burning Brides), Mario Rubalcaba (Earthless/Hot Snakes/Rocket From the Crypt) and Steven McDonald (Redd Kross), have signed with New York based Vice Music. The initial output of the band will be issued this Fall as four EPs comprising a total of 16 songs. The first release, the succinctly titled 1st EP, will be issued as a limited edition 7 inch on October 12th with artwork and exclusive poster courtesy of Raymond Pettibon, the living legend responsible for Black Flag’s overall visual aesthetic (OFF! sport a similar arrangement with the artist). The full collection, First Four EPs, will follow on November 23rd as a four 7 inch EP box set, with each EP in the box featuring its own Pettibon sleeve art.

The first EP gives a concise indication of what can be expected from the group: four songs clocking in at just over four minutes, all as urgent and immediate as imaginable. Paint stripping intensity at ferocious tempos tempered with an ear for melody and structure. This is the sound of four veteran musicians honing their craft to razor-edged perfection, then boiling it down to bare essentials.

Hey Rosetta! are performing on Monday, March 21st

Hey Rosetta! are headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Monday, March 21st, 2011

Hey Rosetta! hails from the rocky and cold northeastern province of Newfoundland, Canada. In 2005, frontman Tim Baker arrived home from a road trip with a suitcase full of poems and melodies. Hey Rosetta! was formed soon after with the addition of a string section (cellist Romesh Thavanathan and violinist Kinley Dowling) and rhythm section (bassist Josh Ward, drummer Phil Maloney, and guitarist Adam Hogan). Since then, they’ve blossomed into a powerful group whose explosive live shows have earned them a devoted following.

The band’s new album, Seeds, was produced by Tony Doogan (Belle and Sebastian, Mogwai, Wintersleep). Seeds is available February 15th and reveals a maturing lyrical depth and an atmosphere rooted to the band’s passion for epic musical experiences.

It was while recording 2008’s breakthrough album Into Your Lungs (and around in your heart and on through your blood) that Tim Baker began to fully realize his vocal and lyrical abilities, and the band made a huge creative leap forward. Into Your Lungs garnered a slew of awards and critical accolades, was short-listed for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize, and Hey Rosetta! were named one of Billboard's Top 5 new Canadian acts.

During the three solid years of touring after Into Your Lungs was released the concept of Seeds was born. “The title track, “Seeds”, came about while out on the highway a few years ago” muses Baker. “In a way it's about what our lives had become, and how we’re like seeds that float around into different fields and cities, bringing something and trying to build something for the people that come to see us.”

The group developed the sonic landscapes found on Seeds while maintaining an extensive tour schedule that took them to Australia, China, Europe, the US and on numerous tours of Canada (including a tour of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut). The band then holed up in Newfoundland to finish the songs before traveling to Halifax, NS to record with renowned producer Tony Doogan at The Sonic Temple. “Tony was really incredible at getting all the sounds and tones we'd dreamt up. He’s an amazing engineer and for all his Scottish bluster and pop-rock dogma, he is very sensitive, patient, and a gifted producer,” says Baker (who wrote all of the songs except “Downstairs”, “Young Glass”, and “Seeds” which were co-writes with guitarist Adam Hogan).

Thematically, Seeds explores everything from depression to procreation. “Young Glass” was written after reading J.D. Salinger’s “Franny and Zooey”. Baker explains:

“It’s sort of directed at the novel’s main character, Franny…. it describes a sleepwalking scene that didn't actually occur in the book, but one that I imagined. We spent a lot of time flying and sleeping on planes and in airports and I was always finding myself in half-waking states, feeling, as one does, all alone somewhere between dream and reality. When I’d wake up, I was always surrounded by people, going about their business. I like that; a sort of evidence that even when we think we are completely alone, we are not. So I wrote Franny, a character who is plagued by such thoughts, a song about it… but it's really about everyone”.

First single “Welcome” is a song about Baker's close friends who were expecting a baby:

“I wrote a song for the little soon-to-be, who now is a 18 month old girl named Madeleine; healthy and beautiful, just like her parents” explains Baker, “I was just sitting with them talking to the unborn baby in a sort of cynical, joking way. You know, like “stay in there as long as you can kid. Sorry, but it's a mess out here...” and so on. Later, alone, I was thinking about what it means to bring new life into the world, how it's sort of sad but also so hopeful and kind of religious”.

Shook Foil are performing second.

"Ok. Shook Foil is a four piece band consisting of the lovely and talented Aaron Hodgin. He writes it and sings it, playing keyboards and guitar. Katie Is pada, Latin beauty, adds violins and the occassional bgv hollar. Basslines and dinosaur stomps are contributed by the ever-irascible Gabe Seibel. Grayson Campbell rounds out the quartet with (what's my best adjective?) all the drumming. Geeze nerd rock get outta here, Weezer. They play pan-ethnic indie folk rock tribal jams. It is vibrant singer-songwriter tunes with a frivolous and fun-loving flair. They recently released their eponymous debut and are taking the Atlanta music scene by storm. Everybody, get yo umbrella! See ya'll at the show. Love ya lots. Peace." - College Battle Of The Bands

She Came From Above is the opener.

A motley ensemble that’s sound might have always been searching for a home has finally landed on planet Earth with a fearless attitude and an apparent agenda of aesthetic plague. The vulgar and determined demeanor of generation Pluto in Scorpio (1984-1996) has birthed a child promised to deliver its receivers to utopia and stain its significance in time. She Came From Above has conjures sounds best described as a montage of punk rock, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, and the often loosely coined label of rock and roll. Doors of intuition open, leading to places known only to those dismissed from the human thought plane, stirring the air, and such a glimpse of enlightenment is received by the sixth sense of the band’s shaman, guitar player and singer, Joshua Overley. The message is then exploited, and the direction of song, ignited by the band’s groovy but explosive rhythm section comprised of Evan Price on drums and Tim Paul Daly on bass guitar, becomes an eye opening display of imagination paralleled to the disaster you just can’t seem to look away from. The song is then decorated and further, characterized by the painter Marvin Figueroa, often noted as reminiscent of fellow painters Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Jimi Hendrix. Whether taking you to strange places, all too familiar feelings, or anomalies of euphoria, She Came From Above has density of substance that can truly free the human spirit.

Where did they come from? Where will they take you? Perhaps following the phrases “Let go and flow” or “feel, don’t think… use that animal instinct” spoken by the band could send us on the right course. Whether we get it or not, we sure desire the liberation and epiphanies you speak of. She Came From Above, you have our full attention.

A live review of Smith Westerns and Yuck from 02/01/2011

Live Review: Smith Westerns, Yuck and Moodrings

February 1, 2011, Drunken Unicorn, Atlanta
by Emily Hogan

I can probably count on one hand the number of bands I’d see more than once in a 48-hour period. Chicago-based Smith Westerns and British rockers Yuck fit into that category. And I’d do it all over again in a heart beat. I saw them in Athens, GA at the 40 Watt on Monday, January 31. It was just the warm up for the Atlanta show the following day.

There was a nice crowd of people ready to go when I got to the Drunken Unicorn around 9PM. It was raining and that always makes me nervous. I had to get there early because Atlanta-based Mood Rings was opening. They recently released an EP, Sweater Weather Forever, and at first listen I knew I needed to see them live. They were excellent, a great way to start the evening.

Yuck took the stage next and they completely blew me away. What can I say? I have thing for bands that tend to sound like they belong in the early ’90s. They played tracks from their debut album that will be released on February 15 on Fat Possum. This was their first trip to Georgia and of course, they couldn’t leave without playing their song that shares the same name. Besides “Georgia,” they played some of my favorite jams, “Get Away,” “The Wall,” and “Suicide Policemen.” They are a talented group of guys and gal, you do not want to miss them when they come to your neighborhood.

I don’t think I can quite describe how I felt when Smith Westerns took the stage. I’ve been a fan since their self-titled debut was released in 2009. They were everything I expected dream pop rockers to be. Since they recently released Dye It Blonde (Fat Possum) in mid-January, it only made sense for them to play tracks from that album. “Imagine Pt. 3,” “End of the Night,” and “Dye It Blonde” really stood out to me. And of course they had to play favorites from their debut like “Dreams,” “Be My Girl,” and ” Girl In Love.” Guitarist Max Kakacek won me over completely. He is ridiculously good at making it look so effortless. Smith Westerns just got up on stage, did their thing and it was over in about an hour.

I know it’s only February, but this show was my favorite of the year so far. I was completely blown away by all three bands. The bill was perfect, the atmosphere was fun, and we were all having a good time.

On Saturday March 19th is Red Lion

Red Lion is headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, March 19th 2011

In the diverse musical landscape, Red Lion forges a rift in Atlanta's rock scene. They’re creating a fresh, energizing sound that combines toothsome rhythms and provocative lyrics with influences ranging from electric blues to dirty rock & roll. Grinding out sharp and skillful hooks, Red Lion harpoons it's melodies then shows them to you alive and writhing. Their dynamic live performances lure in audiences with duality: part sight, part sound... part good, part evil, but all feeling… and it feels good.

Sound & Shape are the second performer of the evening.

Much has been written in recent years proclaiming the 'death of Rock and Roll'. A quick look at the charts -- where flavor-of-the-week pop stars, the newest hip hop fads or hot new country singers all outnumber Rock acts by 5 to 1 -- seems to confirm the declaration. The cause, however, is far from lost. Rock and Roll is alive and well-armed, claiming new terrain in clubs, bars and civic halls. It is in these trenches that Nashville, Tennessee's Sound&Shape, are leading the charge.

A hard-touring outfit from the get-go, Sound&Shape formed in July 2005 and by the end of that year had logged more miles on the road than some bands do in entire careers. January 2006 saw the release of their debut album, Where Machines End Their Lives, and it was a year that would take them coast to coast many times, racking up an impressive 230+ shows.

More heavy touring followed in 2007 (180+ shows) and 2008 (150+), as well as the recording of a new album, The Love Electric. After paring down the 14 song opus to a more focused 5 song EP, Sound&Shape were signed to the US/UK independent label Engineer Records, and The Love Electric was released internationally on January 27th, 2009. Garnering rave reviews in the US as well as the UK, Italy, Romania and Germany, The Love Electric has served to introduce the name Sound&Shape to new fans across the globe.

In early 2010 the band returned to the studio, this time under the guidance of seasoned producer Matthew McCauley and Grammy award winning producer/engineer Casey Wood to tackle their most accessible and mature compositions to date. Armed with a wealth of new material, Sound&Shape have defined their mission: the best way to predict the future is to create it.

Circles Still Repeating are the opener.

On Richard Sapeta's first day of school in Atlanta, after moving from New Jersey, Richard asked a kid in the lunch line if he could sit with them. That student was Spencer Thompson. Within a matter of that lunch period, they made plans to play music together. After playing consistently together for two years, Circles Still Repeating was created.

Together with Spencer's complex tapping and notation and Richard's creative and driving drum beats, Circles Still Repeating fills out their sound and creates a unique listening experience that must be seen live to be fully appreciated.
