A Shay Buckley Benefit show is Happening @ the Drunken Unicorn on Sunday, August 29th

A Benefit show for Shay Buckley is happening at the Drunken Unicorn on Sunday, August 29th

The headlining performer will be The N.E.C.

Atlanta psych. rock outfit the Natural Extension Concept (N.E.C.) has never crafted music that conforms to the standards of punk, prog. or the avant-garde. Rather, under the direction of vocalist/guitarist and founding member Cyrus Shahmir, the group’s musical explorations flourish in the hidden dimensions of sound that exist in the undefined spaces that separate all three. Shahmir created the N.E.C. in 2000 as a means of pure musical expression by way of expanding consciousness. Over the course of a handful of CDs, cassette tapes, singles, EPs and their most recent album, simply titled Is, the N.E.C. has further honed its free-associations and sonic palette with each successive release. With an ever-shifting lineup that currently includes bassist James Oh and drummer Justin Newton improvisation plays a strong role in filling the gaps between skeletal song structures, masses of rhythm and perfectly crafted tones, secret harmonies and distortions that shimmer with glacial majesty. Chemistry is the key to unlocking the fluid nature of the music. The group’s deep cuts bare the mark of automatic writing that stems from the subconscious mind intruding on reflexive, musical communication. Each of the group’s songs unfolds like inward journeys where there’s never a wasted note, nuance or noise hindering the flow. Something truly telepathic happens among all members of the group as each song pushes to the max, creating new sonic textures that bare just as much weight as the working, mechanical parts of the songs. The method is the message as the N.E.C. uncovers new depths of the human mind while pushing minimalist power into maximum overdrive.

Abby Go Go are the third act that will be performing.

album review- It's not quite appropriate to pigeonhole Abby Go Go as a shoegazer band, and the garage rock shoe doesn't fit, either. Rather, twin brothers Bon and Jon Allinson and company traverse an expansive middle ground where '60s pop sensibilities are tempered by elusive feelings of melancholy and elation. The grinding intonations of every guitar tone and distant voice are captured with clarity, illustrating jagged sonic textures that serve the long bouts of repetition in "Louder Than Dreams" and "Come On," rather than dirtying them up. Each song streamlines the group's sound without compromising how much a crest of feedback and distortion can underscore the strung-out sense of beauty evoked. "Glass" is an instant heartbreaker, with layers of slurred melody and ill-defined nostalgia that defies the murky nature of such influences as Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine. There's good variety as well, which is hard to pull off when you're lost in the grooves of such deep cuts. (4 out of 5 stars) -Chad Radford (Creative Loafing Atlanta)

Untied States are the second act.

From MonsterFresh:

"During one listen, I got the impression that, if they were “trying” to do anything at all it was to make a pop album, but that the result of those efforts was that they had failed miserably and came up with something a hell of a lot more interesting. As if they didn’t know any better and were doomed to inevitably create something more amazing by default. At their best, Untied States sound like a group of special ed students are peaking on LSD, while they’re driving around in suped-up Power Wheels, and smashing shit up in a factory warehouse with cricket bats." -Christopher Ryan

Ocha La Rocha are opening the show.

Ocha la Rocha began in 2004 as Johnny la Rocha’s studio recording project, and evolved into a live act that debuted in 2005 to ply the music scenes of Atlanta and Los Angeles. Initially OLR paid tribute to the classic southern rock of la Rocha’s Georgia hometown, but soon absorbed the burgeoning psychedelic-country sounds of the West Coast. Ocha Lives is the culmination of 3 years work, and includes the contributions of accomplished supporting musicians including William Brandon (The Rock*a*Teens), Jason Anchondo (The Warlocks), Marcos Diableros (Spindrift), pedal steel master Page Waldrop, and Milton Chapman (The Hiss). Johnny la Rocha’s grainy vocals and irreverent lyrics evoke a juke joint bluesman, a libidinous southern rocker, and a tender-hearted, crooning cowboy. This unlikely mix of styles is accomplished in the skillful juxtaposition of stripped down rock songs paired with lavish, quasi-psychedelic arrangements, next to wailing country folk. The result is a debut of both lush complexity and spare vintage rock. Ocha la Rocha will eat your homework, drink your beer, smoke your weed, shag your sister, tune your guitar, fix your tube amp, deep fry your turkey and impress your parents at Sunday dinner.
