The Young from Austin, Texas are performing second.

"The debut full-length from this Austin rock four-piece exchanges the raucous pop-punk of the band’s earliest days for something all their own. These are tightly wound missives shot directly into the dirt and allowed to slump, revealing a brace of heartbroken, doggedly determined punk rock ballads, jagged and rough, crying into their beers at the end of the bar. Songs this specific in mood and motive, with parts as anthemic and righteous, haven’t been heard since GBV hung it up. Hell, they sound like the Mice if they were on Factory; proud, shaken anthems that stay with you in the dark." - Mexican Summer

Brutal Truth will SCRAMBLE your brain on Friday, December 10th

Brutal Truth are crushing the weak at the Drunken Unicorn on Friday, December 10th, 2010.

It is doubtful the most extreme end of the musical spectrum has ever possessed such a transfixing dichotomy as BRUTAL TRUTH. The band progressed with boundless enthusiasm through the primal fury of traditional grindcore and hardcore punk. They attacked suffocating city life on the edge of the 21st century and its media noise overload with the bare-knuckled forcefulness of passion, conviction and a simple love for playing music. They created chaos with a surgical precision and finesse unmatched by their peers.

The primitive origins of BRUTAL TRUTH can be traced back to the early nineties when infamous bassist extraordinaire Danny Lilker created the group. The initial three-piece lineup featuring Danny on vocals/bass, guitarist Brent "Gurn" McCarty and drummer Scott Lewis was completely raw and only a side project to Danny’s other musical endeavors. The trio issued a quick demo and single before adding the vocal presence of Atlanta-born music journalist Kevin Sharp.

In a flash Earache Records picked up the quartet, Danny ditched his other project, and BRUTAL TRUTH issued their 1992 debut album "Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses". This work became nothing less than a milestone in the grindcore/death metal world. One of the fastest records of its time, "Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses" launched the band into the international spotlight. The absolutely manic three second video for "Collateral Damage" received worldwide exposure via MTV, and the tracks "Ill Neglect" and "Walking Corpse" remained staples in the band’s live show for years afterwards.

BRUTAL TRUTH immediately hit the road and secured a reputation as one of the hardest touring bands in the underground. First came the east coast and midwest U.S. tour with INCANTATION and PUNGENT STENCH, then the North American Campaign For Musical Destruction with NAPALM DEATH, CARCASS and CATHEDRAL. Europe and Canada were conquered with FEAR FACTORY and NAPALM DEATH respectively, and another U.S. go round with BOREDOMS and PAIN TEENS followed immediately thereafter. Vast strings of regional dates tied the touring madness together.

As if the oomph provided bythe addition of power tools and other metal objects into the live setting wasn’t enough, the sound collage of "Bedsheets", and LARCENY title track techno remix of their "Perpetual Conversion" mini-LP in 1993 further established the band’s need to experiment. BRUTAL TRUTH made their first trip to Japan upon the mini-CD’s release to tour once again with the BOREDOMS and S.O.B.. Drummer Lewis exited the ranks after their return home.

Kevin Sharp (who has performed with John Zorn’s NAKED CITY and PAINKILLER) stumbled upon the Philadelphia-born drummer Rich Hoak (ex-NINEFINGER) outside of the famed ABC-No-Rio in the fall of 1993. The rest is, as they say, history.

BRUTAL TRUTH retreated to an isolated cabin in New Hampshire during the winter of 1993/1994 to write and rehearse their sophomore record. The result of their efforts surfaced as "Need To Control", a twenty plus song document of extremist angst. Running the gamut from full-on grindcore to DISCHARGE-styled punk to ambient/electronic sound collage to death metal, "Need To Control" was incredibly expansive and the pivotal transition point for the band’s future. As with most groundbreaking works, the album perplexed as many people as it entertained. The new lineup embarked on more lengthy tour runs including a 69-show-in-75-day European tour and a three month North American headlining stint with MACABRE and PUNGENT STENCH.

Due to their willingness to experiment in various noise ensembles outside the band, BRUTAL TRUTH amassed a disparate audience: metalheads, punkers, grind and underground hardcore fans, art-noise and experimental music enthusiasts. The band was lauded as having helped make it possible for noise artists to establish themselves in North America.

Thursday, December 9th is Awolnation

Red Bull Records presents

Awolnation at the Drunken Unicorn on Thursday, December 9th, 2010

Like Peter Finch’s newsman Howard Beale in the movie Network, AWOL is mad as hell and he’s not going to take it anymore. Broke and with his world crumbling around him, he launched a NATION.
And indeed, what can a poor boy do… except make some of his toughest, hardest, most passionate music ever, slamming it with the most up-to-date hip-hop and electronic dance beats in a genre-blending mash-up that defines AWOLNATION. It’s not just music, but a crusade designed to fight all that’s fake, commercialized, compromised and debased in popular culture.
“I think very much like a kid in terms of fantasy and magic,” says AWOL. “I get rhythms, beats, colors and patterns from the transcendence of the ocean. I’m influenced by both its beauty and its absolute terror.”
Some say AWOL is the name he’d rap under while battling his friends free-style, a reference to the way he’d slip out of parties without saying goodbye (“I never liked the pressure of explaining why I’m leaving”) while Oakland Raiders fans contend that NATION comes from a devotion to the era of Bo Jackson and Howie Long. No one really knows the origin, but together they form a commitment to getting rid of life’s wreckage and building a trend based on honesty, commitment and, well, aggressive passion.
“It’s not a political statement,” insists AWOL. “My definition is to escape a situation you can’t handle. A way for all of us to get our aggression out, cry a little bit, or even laugh.”

Mr Gnome will be performing on Wednesday, December 8th

Mr Gnome will be performing at the Drunken Unicorn on Wednesday, December 8th, 2010.

"'Rabbit' from mr. Gnome's debut full-length, Deliver This Creature, pulls a heckuva lot of noise out of a small hat, pretty much just Sam Meister's tribal drums and the reverberating vocals and sludgily atmospheric guitar fills of Nicole Barille." - Pitchfork

The psychedelically syncopated sounds of Cleveland's mr. Gnome draw on a visceral mix of contrasting textures. Masculine and feminine, soft whispers and shrill yelps, pounding drums and soothing lullabies combine to form a discursive indie-rock collage. The duo's jagged symphony of sound has them compared to a scattershot of artists ranging from Portishead, Cat Power, Massive Attack, and Joanna Newsom, to Death From Above 1979, Blonde Redhead, Sonic Youth, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Heave Yer Skeleton, the follow-up to mr. Gnome's debut full-length, Deliver This Creature, (now available on vinyl) promises to be no less a musical twist than the last offering. Returning with the same basic, minimalist ingredients; a soulful, feminine power and inventive, dynamic drumming, the two are suspended in a sea of drug-induced themes pouring from their simplistic set-up. The id, dreams, silver giants, hallucinations, flying horses, the devil, Armageddon, vampires, and ghosts are just a few of the hauntingly, hypnotic subjects floating between pleasure and pain in the soundscapes of Heave Yer Skeleton.

"It's still a work in progress, but there's a link to a song called "If Only" from their recently released #2's CD. Rizzudo is a band of three brothers all about 3 yrs apart in age. We formed around 2000 following the ending of Donald and Gills' ex-band called Plexorjet. We recorded and released a 7 song e.p. on moodwing records in 2002. We toured supporting our release playing shows up and down both east and west coasts including several midwest tours. We've been on a year long hiatus, all of 2007, but we are back and we're anticipating a new recording with intentions for a full length record to be released in 2008! We hope to play lots of shows and tour again this year so keep your eyes and ears open!

Saturday, December 4th, 2010 is SlowEarth

SlowEarth headline the Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, December 4th, 2010

SlowEarth is an Atlanta, GA. based 4-piece electro-rock band with an engaging and powerful presence and sound. Fusing heavy dance beats, hypnotic melodies, analog synths and a solid rock band with pop sensibilities, SlowEarth has created their own distinctive sound with an explosive energy not to be missed!

SLOWEARTH:

Forming from the ashes of the prominent 90's industrial rock band 'CAGE'; Zach Solem, Joe Price, Richard Farmer and Rik Robinson came together to form 'SlowEarth'. After years of touring and building a strong fan base within the industrial scene, the band found themselves inspired and influenced by the new sounds in the music community and evolved their own sound accordingly. Instead of sticking to a proven (if tired) formula, they diversified their electro-rock flavor by incorporating hard-hitting dance beats, searing synth leads, groovy baselines, and an eclectic blend of melody, guitar, and lyrical sensitivity.

By 2001, the band had assembled a more cohesive and electro-leaning group of songs that would become their first release as SlowEarth that they titled 'CAGE' - an homage to the original band. As they prepared to release “Cage,” Solem met Ben Thomas, a local synthesizer performer and programmer with a punk rock background. Thomas was recruited to work on several remixes for the album, and at the release of “Cage” in 2001, he became the band’s first full-time live keyboardist and co-writer for the band's future releases.

During the promotion and after tirelessly touring, Rik Robinson decided to leave the band to pursue other musical endeavors and the remaining members decided to continue as a foursome. By 2003, SlowEarth began work on their follow-up album. This time, with two programmers in the band, they further fine-tuned their distinctive sound through electronic experimentation and released the critically acclaimed electronics-heavy 'EDGE' CD during the winter of 2003.

By 2005, SlowEarth had earned their place as a member on the very short list of goto bands for regional festivals as-well-as national act support.

In 2006, SlowEarth locked themselves away into their noize lab and began melding everything in their electronic arsenal with the live energy of rock instrumentation to create what would be their third and most anticipated studio release, entitled "Beautiful Machines." This time around, SlowEarth took the listener on a more personal journey. Released in 2007, Beautiful Machines is as aggressive and ruthless as it is both tender and vulnerable. The 12-track CD immediately set the stage for an emotional roller coaster starting with the fast-paced and catchy electronic-dance groove of "The Fix." Following that, the listener is taken through a soundscape of hard-hitting synths, big beats and experimental guitars while the charismatic front-man, Zach Solem voices the introspection and frustrations of today's "y-generation." SlowEarth's sound further evolves.

In the spring of 2010, SlowEarth released a limited quantity double-CD that they aptly titled “VAULT” that included previously unreleased tracks and B-Sides. "VAULT" was made available for the first time during a special fan appreciation show they performed 022010 in Atlanta, GA at Smith's Olde Bar.

With 4 successful full-length independent releases under their belts, non-stop performances, national recognition, and mounting accolades, SlowEarth has become a top contender in the music scene.

Currently, SlowEarth are preparing for the release of their next full-length album tentatively titled 'CONSTRUCT' in spring 2011.

A review of the Freelance Whales show that occured on Monday, November 8th

"It was a surprising crowd for a Monday evening, where, upon my arrival to the Drunken Unicorn, there was a line snaking outside the door. Once inside, I had to push my way through the crowded mass of beer-bottle hoisting arms and cuddling couples. Apparently, Freelance Whales really draws in the women-folk.

Miniature Tigers opened the show, having some nice moments, like when the lead singer walked through the crowd, performing an entire dance song in the most intimate way possible. These guys started the evening off well, but the night belonged to Freelance Whales and everybody knew it. As soon as lead singer, Judah Dadone, walked out with the rest of the band, the crowd whistled and hooted and hollered. Instantly, everyone saw Freelance Whales for what they are – just a bunch of sweethearts. The stage with its Christmas lighted flower decorations; Dadone with his big glasses and round smiling face; Doris Cellar playing a bass guitar twice her size; a glockenspiel taking center stage. Well, this concert, like any concert, had its highlights. Scattered throughout the evening, a small selection of new songs were performed, the best of which having been previously released by Stereogum, “Enzymes.” This song, with its advanced lyrics and improved instrumentation, singularly excites me so much for their eventual sophomore album. The band finished the evening with a bang, as they tend to do, by playing “Generator ^ 2nd Floor.” For this song, they finally took out the banjo and harmonium, which are both normally key instruments for the band, but at this show, went by the wayside. In “Generator,” the finger-tapped banjo, the fulfilling harmonium, the simple glockenspiel and oh that ingenious guitar riff, are what make this song so great; the simplicity that makes the track so loveable recorded and live. Similarly, this is the same idea that makes Freelance Whales so pleasant. Simplicity, sincerity, and smiles."

Check It Out the Drunken Unicorn has been selected as one of the ten best venues for new music in the 21st Century by Flavorpill's Flavorwire.

"How could you go wrong with a venue called The Drunken Unicorn and described by one reviewer as “equal parts whimsy and piss”? Located at Atlanta’s big, weird mega-club-plex the MJQ Concourse and decorated with — you guessed it — various unicorn-themed items, the place opened on New Years Eve 2004 and has been hosting epic shows ever since. Everyone from Phantogram to Wavves to Juliette Lewis has played there, and No Age will be taking the stage in January."

Friday, December 3rd, is Horrible Idea's cd release show

Horrible Idea are having their cd release show on Friday, December 3rd.

Horrible Idea is a Punk’ish band from Atlanta... or is that Post-Punk? Maybe they should be described as Post-Post-Punk in that their music is generally played in fast and irregular tempos, but with an epic metal sound, and ska riffs thrown in for good measure. Propagandhi, Lagwagon, NoFx, Streetlight Manifesto, Thrice, Mastodon, In Flames, Stratovarius, Children of Bodom, and the like are enormous influences on the band’s sound. Verse-chorus, verse-bridge-chorus songs are no longer the norm in the band’s songwriting.

Their shows are always played with intensity, charisma, and maximum silliness, no matter if there's one person at the venue, or 300. Horrible Idea would play their hearts out to a cement wall because they love to play music. They are not rock stars, but a group of people who love to play music together and share that love with others.

Through the years (2005-Present), many shows, tours, and some lineup changes; Horrible Idea continues to play shows and write new material. By 2010, their abilities have grown, and the band’s sound has expanded and changed; becoming more experimental and epic. They have always been interested in creating fast, powerful, and triumphant aspects in their music, and they are coming close to perfecting that sound in their upcoming album

Horrible Idea’s upcoming 2010 album is going swimmingly, with 15 songs close to finished, and several more in the works. Rob and Dan from Wizkid Sound Studios (wizkidsound.com) have been invaluable throughout the recording process. They have acted as producers, technicians, babysitters (for band members, not actual babies), psychologists, and anything else the band has required throughout the year long spectacle of their album-making. The Wizkids have helped Horrible Idea reach new levels of musicality, and the new album is going to be incredible because of this team.

The band plans to spread their music, play amazing hilarious shows, and continues to work hard to get their music heard in Atlanta, Athens, and the entire known Universe. They will create and play music until their hands become too crippled with arthritis to hold an instrument.

Drawing from experiences in life, literature, and imagination; Horrible Idea’s lyrics vary from seething political rant, to songs about mushroom trips. A mix of punk, ska, metal, and miscellaneous influences from each of the band members hopefully ensures that the band's music will never dull. Pair that with their drive to constantly improve as musicians and songwriters, and hopefully they’ve got a winning combination. Of course, there are no winners or losers when it comes to making art, as long as you're passionate about it. Horrible Idea has passion in truckloads. Perhaps boatloads. No.... Uber-Passion.

Swank Sinatra is a D.I.Y. Rock n' Roll band that formed in Atlanta in September of 2004. Our goals are to melt faces and take names, and to fight various wildlife in various arenas (especially bears and crocodiles.) We also are currently working on a way to end world hunger by developing a tree that can grow cheeseburgers. So far, we have only been able to melt faces.

In all reality, Swank Sinatra is the brainchild of the slightly disturbed minds of Bob Place and Brandon Pittman, friends since childhood. We have been fortunate enough to play such wonderful events as: New Orleans Jazz Festival, Dragon*Con, 500 Songs For Kids, and Nophest just to name a few. We have also played live for Comcast OnDemand, as well as been featured on XM Satellite Radio. We have played a lot of shows, met even more cool people, and even learned a little along the way. We enjoy writing songs about homeless people, pirates, ladies, and breakfast. We also enjoy long walks on the beach and candle lit dinners. Much like the Highlander, there can be only one Swank Sinatra.

Swine Song presents Wake Of The Titan on Saturday, November 27th

Swine Song Entertainment presents

Wake Of The Titan on Saturday, November 27th, 2010.

In the Spring of 2007, while attending the Atlanta Institute of Music, Jake Merritt and Blue Phillips were paired up to perform “Take Five” in jazz performance class. Impressed by each other’s abilities on guitar, the two quickly became friends and began jamming on a regular basis. Joined by Daniel Burch on drums, the trio soon realized this was no ordinary group of musicians. The chemistry between the three sparked an influx of songwriting and a vision for something greater than the sum of it’s parts. This sound was Wake Of The Titan. Eager to get this out to the masses, they ventured into the studio in the Summer of 2007 and began recording.

After a short break, the highly anticipated EP, entitled “Goodnight, Cold Earth”, was released in April of ’08. Described as “…intense, thrilling…hauntingly beautiful, but captivating as well”, the six song EP defied modern rock standards. Goodnight, Cold Earth (title track) breaks the six minute barrier, but is well-received as being “…graceful in its transitions and poetic in its lyrics.”
Deeper cuts like If We’re Quiet dive into the realm of the cinematic, which one review quoted as being, “…a song of first subdued and then frenzied anguish, this would be a great song to put on the soundtrack of a psychological thriller...”

“We don’t try to be different. We’re just being ourselves”, said Daniel Burch, talking about the recording of the record and the band’s sound. “The songs more or less wrote themselves. When you’re in a group of people who love music as much as you do, it just comes out naturally. It’s a great feeling. It also helps to have someone like Jake who can sing and write good songs (Laughs)!”

Following the release, Wake Of The Titan went on to perform a number of shows around the Southeast over the remaining part of 2008. One of the year’s highlights included taking 3rd place at the Seventh Annual Sweetwater Showdown. This was a huge surprise for the band, considering it was against 30 other bands and it was only their second show together. They were able to round out the year with a showcase at the Atlantis Music Conference and numerous reviews from a wide variety of music publications.

After countless auditions for bass players came up empty-handed, the band decided to stick with the original formula that had worked so well from the beginning. Wake Of The Titan reformed the three-piece, with Blue stepping in to fill the bass duties. “We work so well together, so there’s no need in throwing an unknown variable into the mix,” said Blue in regards to the transition. “There’s no gray area; it’s all black and white. You can’t ask for a better situation.”

Wake Of The Titan has continued to push forward, writing new material and preparing for the new record. “It’s a little bit different writing as a three-piece. The sound is evolving, but that’s to be expected. There’s much more negative space to work with, so you have to find that balance of when to play and when not to play. People tend to forget how important rests are in music. It takes you out of your comfort zone, but you tend to listen more. I think people will latch onto that when they hear the new material,” explains Jake.

The new record will be a concept, focusing on the nature of mankind. While still in it’s infancy, the album looks to once again show the true mettle of this band.
